Review

Another year. Another October. Another Paranormal Activity. Part three to be exact. Going all the way back to the supposed beginning of the demonic problems facing this particular family.

Now here we are with young Katie and young Kristi. Their mom Julie and stepfather Dennis. The movie starts abruptly with some background scenes from the second movie, before Hunter was born, with Katie bringing in some old boxes from her house that their grandmother gave her. Inside are tapes from the past. We then jump right into a birthday taking place in the late 80’s. Soon after establishing that Dennis will be our camera man and a sex interrupting earthquake, we see our first shot of the demon (covered in dust). More cameras come out and what should have been an innocent imaginary friend turns into a nightmare ride on a roller coaster.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the story or of the scares, since many will be seeing the movie this weekend. But the scares are there and they are freaking great. And the thing is that the scares themselves are not what gets to you. No it is the build up and the suspense. That anxiety and tension before the movie scares you makes it all the more worse than what it could be. Overall such a great job delivering these moments. Especially with the limited camera views and the camera on the fan. Giving us a scrolling back and forth effect. Adding to the films scares. Keep on eye out for the babysitter scene.

The ending or the last 15 minutes has been dubbed a life ruin-er. I would like to say that yes it was, but it wasn’t. It was really fucking creepy and nerve racking (the closet scene) and scary but it will not ruin your life. The noises of the demon alone will keep you up at night. And that is all I will say about that.

The story itself was pretty straight forward. It kept along the lines of the previous films while delivering a lot of background. But at the same time it opened up more questions and plot points that need answering. Obviously leaving it open for another film.

Also after seeing the movie many will notice that a lot of scene that were shown in the trailers are missing completely or changed a bit. One that I was looking forward to see was the Bloody Mary scene. The movie gave us a different version that I found to be a lot better than the small tease the trailer showed us. I mean the shit hit the fan in that scene.

Final Thoughts

Paranormal Activity 3 gave us the best of the trilogy. Better scares and a decent background story to work with but still leaving us wanting more. The scares delivered and the comedy bits helped break the tension while keeping us off guard to scare the crap out of us soon after.
Definitely go out and watch Paranormal Activity 3
