The Hunger Games

I have not read the books, yet I can't wait to see this movie. The Hunger Games feels (to me at least) like an American version of Battle Royal. Two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. Instead of a bunch of trouble kids sent to an island to kill each other. If all goes well, and it seems it will, The Hunger Games might be the answer to what book based movie will be the next success after Harry Potter.

10 Movies To Watch Out For in 2012: The Three Stooges

By: Robert Acosta

I never thought I would have this movie on my list of movies to watch, but after seeing the trailer....i'm a little convinced that this won't be complete and utter shit. It could be a respectable movie, it could be something that people will enjoy, though i'm not completely convinced that the movie will be good. Chris Diamantopoulos (Who?!) plays Moe, Sean Hayes plays Larry and Will Sasso plays Curly. The trailer shows them in action for the first time, and they're pretty spot on for the most part. Definitely Sasso as Curly works. The other two may need a little breaking in to get used to, but as someone who has seen every Three Stooges short and movie they produced, these guys are pretty good. I cannot wait to see what happens to it.

Season 2: Episode 1 - "Turn This Mother Out"

Aidan tries to keep the peace in Boston by trying satisfy Bishop's followers with donated blood until Mother, the queen of the vampires, arrives to pass judgment on Aidan and the others. Nora moves in with Josh, Aidan, and Sally, and while unable to see her, convinces Sally to attend her high school reunion. As the full moon approaches, Nora starts asking Josh things about what he goes through, fearing that she too is now a werewolf.

Sally attends her reunion, meeting with her high school friend Stevie Adkins who committed suicide their junior year, and Diane Alcott, the vapid prom queen who died on a missionary trip in Africa. When Diane ignores Stevie, even in death, Sally confronts her, leading to Diane having a revelation and her Door appearing to send her to the otherside. Upset as she missed her Door, Stevie consoles her by telling her that she can still dream in death. When she is alone that night, she sleeps and has a dream where she sees her door. When she opens it, she is attacked by some unknown dark force, causing her to abruptly wake up and find herself floating several feet in the air.

Aidan appears before the council of vampires at the Halloway Hotel and Mother who decides that Bishop's "orphans" are to be culled and Aidan will be the second-in-command to her own daughter who will control Boston. She also adds that if Aidan is successful in grooming her daughter, he will be free of the council. That night, Nora drops Josh off in the woods so he can transform, and when she begins to hear his transformation, she is relieved that she has not been infected until she doubles over in pain and transforms, as well. As she is trapped in the car and calling out to him, Josh is shot at by Heggeman who has been tasked by Mother to kill him to remove any distractions to keep Aidan focused on her daughter. As Heggeman lifts the gun to shoot Josh again, the screen cuts to black, and a shot is heard.

Grey Damon - Lee

Episode 12 Review - "Witness"

Jake returns and offers Cassie a chance to finally determine what happened the night her father died. He tells her he was there at the fire but overtime blocked out the events he saw and tells her she can go into his memory and see what he's blocked. But Diana and Adam are suspicious of his motives but eventually agree on it seeing this as the only way to see what happened to their parents that night.

Once in his memory, Jake and Cassie see what had truly happened the night of the fire and, after a near-death experience when Cassie nearly died while in in Jake's memory by suffocating in the smoke, find out that witch hunters actually started the fire and that Cassie's father didn't die in the fire like everyone assumed; he actually escaped unharmed and that Adam's father lied about not being there that night, clearly bothering Adam. In the end Cassie is determined to find out if her father actually lived or died and with Jake goes to her father's grave and digs up his coffin and sees an animal skeleton instead and therefore verifying her father is really alive.

John Carter (Of Mars)

To me it seems like the summer movie season is starting really early this year. With John Carter and my next film pick for this list coming out in March. But with that said John Carter will be a nice big budget film to keep us satisfied enough until the main course comes in May. And what is not to like? Aliens and creatures in all out war while one man is caught in the middle.

10 Movies To Watch Out For in 2012: American Reunion

By: Robert Acosta

It's been 9 years since the last "official" American Pie movie, before they went on a rampage with straight to DVD movies. Later this year, American Reunion will drop and i'm sure it's going to do well in all aspects, in both box office and the movie itself. It's a basic high school reunion, but if you've seen any American Pie movie, nothing is really basic with them. I can't wait to see what characters like Stifler, Jim, Michelle, Finch and the rest will inevitably get in to.

10 Movies to Watch Out For in 2012: Hunger Games

By: Robert Acosta

I just finished reading the first book in this series, a couple of months away from the wide release of the movie, and I couldn't be more pumped about it. The Hunger Games is a story circling around a poor woman in a poor district having to sacrifice herself to what is called The Hunger Games, a 24 person life or death competition. After reading the book, I cannot wait to see how it all pans out on screen, though i'm sure they;ll change some things up. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrellson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz round out the star studded cast.

Ten Movies to Watch Out For In 2012

Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance

I could already feel the looks you are giving me for including this movie. But you need to hear me out. Catch the teaser trailer and regular trailer and tell me that this will be the same crappy movie as the first one?

The style and look of the film are totally different and look amazing. Look at Ghost Rider himself. Bubbling and boiling melting leather jacket. A dirty and burnt skull. Even the action is ramped up. GR: Spirit of Vengeance is a totally different film and seems like it wants to redeem itself from the past. And with the way things look it will do just that.

Ten Movies to Watch Out For In 2012

Chronicle

Well creating this list and boiling it down to ten movies was rather hard. There will be a great amount of movies released this year that are must see. But sadly I had to leave out some good ones. Like Brave, Warm Bodies, Paranorman, and Premium Rush. Hell I didn't even want to include the releases for Fall/Winter becasue those deserve a list on it's own.

Seems Robert and myself are looking forward to catching Chronicle. And really can you blame us? A movie that shows us the what an average teen/young adult would do with superpowers. The good. The fun. The bad. The deadly. Everyone has thought of this many times in their life. What would you do with superpowers? The ability to fly. Telekinetic powers. Super strength. Then would you abuse these powers? Or use them for good?

10 Movies to Watch Out For in 2012: Chronicle/This Means War

In typical me fashion, I cannot stick to the rules...that i've created. I couldn't stick to just 10 movies...11 are on my list. In even more typical fashion, I have to give shout outs to 2 movies that are not on this list, but were close. Sorry Expendables 2, your PG 13 rating has really turned me off. And, sorry The Dictator.

Let's start the list:

Chronicle/This Means War

Now, I want you to keep in mind that there is no rank to this list. Sure, there are movies I wanna see right this moment as compared to others, but the list is just 10 (roughly) movies to look out for this year.

In Chronicle we have 3 friends who come upon superpowers, and as any young person with any kind of people would do, things seem to get out of hand with one of them and they must cope with who (or what) they are. It's a great premise, and the trailer gives you enough to make it look good and want more.

Changing pace here, This Means War stars Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as they try to win the affection of Reese Witherspoon once they realize they're both, kind of, dating her. Pine and Hardy are capable of pulling off a action/comedy like this one, I don't anyone will question that. This could be one of those really fun movies to watch that blends the great mix of action and comedy.

10 Movies to watch out for in 2012

We sure do like lists here at The Movie Spot!

So, while January was somewhat of a slow month, you should not be concerned with the rest of 2012, because there are plenty of movies coming that are going to be amazing, dominate box offices and become new classics and fan favorites soon enough.

So, in the next 10 days, myself and Jose Diaz will be putting out 10 movies that should catch your eye this year (separately) and of course, we'll talk about why that movie would even leave our breath!

Beware You Are In For A Scare

The Spot New: R.L. Stine's Goosebumps Books Might Be Adapted Into A Movie(s)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack the Giant Killer screenwriter Darren Lemke is in final negotiations to take over screenwriting chores on this project.
It’s still unclear whether the big-screen debut will be an adaptation of one of the books or possibly a series, but Columbia Pictures picked up the rights to 50 of the books, so there’s a lot of potential there.

Goosebumps has had a TV series before and currently has a new show being shown on the HUB.

Sentinel Of Liberty Front and Center

The Spot News: Avengers info and new Captain America Photo

Source: Spinoff Online

Entertainment Weekly has released comments from The Avengers director, Joss Whedon, — as well as a new image of Chris Evans as the Sentinel of Liberty.

“So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective,” Whedon tells the magazine, “[The Avengers] is very much about people who are alone — because I’m writing it. [Captain America] is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris and I have always tried to make it, without making it goofy or too obvious, always tried to make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”

But while the audience may be introduced to the world of The Avengers through Captain America’s eyes, the director insists the rest of the team — Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury — carry an equal share of the movie.

“You get them in a world, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D., where they fit in. And you say, upfront, these are monsters. These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings?” the director tells EW. “Let’s just investigate that.”

Marvel’s The Avengers, which also stars Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd, opens May 4.

Chronicle of The Fantastic Four

The Spot News: Chronicle director Being Looked At For Fantastic Four Reboot

Source: Spinoff Online

Josh Trank, whose found-footage superpower film Chronicle has been generating a lot of buzz, is the apparent frontrunner to direct the reboot of Fox’s Fantastic Four franchise.

According to Variety, Trank has had several meetings with studio executives, who are waiting to see how his debut feature opens on Feb. 3 before making a final decision. However, Fox, which is distributing Chronicle, is said to be high on the film and its director, so the 27-year-old Trank is expected to get the job.

Small Screen: Rob, Episode 1 Review

By: Robert Acosta
"Pilot"

As soon as I saw the commercial for this show, I knew it would be a big hit. I think Rob Schneider is one of the more likable people around, and putting him in a position where he has a chance to really use that as a strength. More so than that, he's actually pretty funny and i'm glad he has his own show now.

Rob is a show following Rob Schneider and his wife Maggie are newly married and little does Rob know that Maggie has a large Mexican family that isn't exactly fond of him and Rob must do all he can to win them over. Now, that may not be a synopsis of the series or how it'll be, but certainly how the first episode went.

The series also stars Cheech Marin, who of course is famous for his part in the Cheech and Chong movies and duo, but he's been funny well after those movies and he adds some great comedy to the show as he plays the father of Maggie. The sit down talk between him and Rob, shown in the pic above, is really funny and probably the one thing that made the episode stand out.

The series seemingly will hang in the balance of Schneider and Marin and their banter together, which can be seen as a good and bad thing. They've also got a sidekick of sorts for Rob that goes by Hector, who is also a part of Maggies family. He provides that "unwanted" family member who forces a relationship between himself and Rob.

This show has a lot of potential, it certainly did tremendous in the ratings and will probably continue to do so. The CBS lineup is certainly stacked, but Rob seems like it'll fit in just fine. In terms of a letter grade, i'd give this a B+.

Small Screen: Are You There, Chelsea? Episode 1 Review

By: Robert Acosta

"Pilot"

When I heard that Laura Prepon was making her way back to prime time TV, it's something I had to see. For those who may not know the name so well, you more than likely remember Laura Prepon as Donna from the hit TV series, That 70's Show. Besides the obvious fact that she is downright double sexy, she's actually a pretty talented actress and it's kind of weird that it's taken her 6 years to make her way back to prime time TV.

Nonetheless she is starring in a new show aptly named Are You There, Chelsea? The show is based off the book "Are You There Vodka, it's me Chelsea" written by comedian/tv host Chelsea Handler, who plays the sister of the main character, Chelsea.

The First Episode, Pilot, is your basic introductory episode to a series. You get a little insight as to who the main character is while meeting the many other characters involved and some stories get preliminary setups. Chelsea is a bartender who just so happens to be an alcoholic. She's a very care free, loose person by every stretch of the imagination. Her best friend, Olivia, is her Asian counterpart, almost seemingly on the same wavelength as Chelsea, if not a little bit more "visionary" for lack of a better word.

I'll be honest, I didn't know what to expect when watching this show. It's clear that this is a raunchy kind of show, or at least it's attempting to be. It's also a little bit too gimmicky, in my opinion. 2 characters in particular just come off as such. The midget barbell, who just so happens to be color blind as well and the eventual roommate of Chelsea and Olivia, who is borderline insane and very quirky (to say the least). It feels like a little too much for a first episode, let alone a whole season. Now, I haven't read the book that this show is based off, and if it goes like that in the book, I would honestly have no idea, I can only comment on the show.

It's not a bad show by any stretch, it had a couple of moments that me laugh and it certainly has potential to be pretty good. Can it hang with the rest of NBCs very strong fall lineup? Not sure just yet. If I had to give it a letter grade, a C+ would be about where i'd put it.

Episode 11 Review - "Fire/Ice"

Adam helps Cassie look into her father's past. Trying to find death/life certificate, any type of papers or information they can find. Yet everything is missing or does not exist. Except for one piece of information of some owned land. Which ends up being the house that the circle uses for a lair. She finds a symbol which reminds her of something in her book. Yet Faye stole the other half of the spell. Ethan tries to be a better father by chaperoning the school dance.

Faye's efforts to gain individual power have frightening results when she tries to steal Cassie's power but ends up stealing the Circle's instead of Cassie's and nearly kills them (excluding Cassie, who isn't affected). Faye demands Lee tell her how to reverse the spell and severs the connection that was giving her the power. Yet we see that he steals some of her blood during the ritual. Lee is going to come back and bite everyone on their asses.

However, despite this, the Circle is furious at Faye's reckless choices for power outside the Circle, with each attempt nearly killing someone, but Faye lashes out about Cassie's dark magic and how she's so full of dark magic and gets a "free pass" when she's accidentally done things that ended up also hurting the Circle whereas she's "burned at the stake," before storming off officially leaving the Circle. Back in the basement of the old abandoned house, Cassie further searches for a way to try to rid herself of her powers and Adam stumbles upon her and is concerned at Cassie's sudden dangerous methods to try to rid herself of her dark magic and when taking the book from her hands whispers to her, "Your destiny is important to me." They then share a passionate kiss before someone walks down into the room. They turn and see Jake has returned to Chance Harbor.

The mayor insists that Damon talk Stefan into agreeing or they will have to seek him out and deal with him. Finding out that a vetala creature or as we find out two vetala creatures are responsible for the deaths and disappearances. Sam gets caught himself and Dean has to find the girl and then look for Sam and her father. Which he does with help from the girl. Killing the vetalas and saving the guys.

But Before that Dean was with Frank we find out that the numbers were part of a location, a field to be exact, that Dick bought. They find out that they are going to build something. What exactly they don’t know. Frank also reveals the reason why he is the way he is. Revealing that his wife and kids were butchered, and now to avoid going crazy and killing himself he "Decide to be fine until the end of the week; make yourself smile because you're alive and that's your job... Then do it again the next week".

Also the fate of Bobby was not addressed. Now yes we ended with him dying but did he decide to be a ghost or pass on? We never saw anything relating to cremation or burials either. Or Sam and Dean never mentioned anything to that affect. So either they will address this soon or they are leaving it open for Bobby to return. Also who drank Dean’s beer? Castiel? Bobby?

Zombie Love

The Spot News: First Image From Warm Bodies

Source: Collider.com

Director Jonathan Levine’s (50/50) adaptation of Isaac Marion‘s novel Warm Bodies. A “zombie love story” stars Nicholas Hoult as “R”, a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories.

Here’s the full synopsis for Warm Bodies:

Zombies love people, especially their brains. But R (Nicholas Hoult) is different. He’s alive inside, unlike the hundreds of other grunting, drooling undead—all victims of a recent plague that drove the remaining survivors into a heavily guarded city. Now the Zombies roam about an airport terminal, searching for human prey and living in fear of the vicious Boneys, the next undead incarnation.

One day, R and his best friend M lumber toward the city in search of food. There, R first sets his eyes on JULIE (Teresa Palmer), a beautiful human. Determined to save her—first from the other Zombies and then from the Boneys—R hides her in his home, a cluttered 747 aircraft. Julie is terrified, and R’s grunted assurances of “Not…eat” do little to calm her. But when R begins to act more human than Zombie, coming to her defense, refusing to eat human flesh, and even speaking in full sentences, Julie realizes that R is special.

After a few close calls with the Boneys, and with her father mounting an armed search for her, Julie realizes she can’t hide forever. So she sneaks back home, leaving R broken-hearted. Desperate to see her, R decides to comb his hair, stand a little straighter, and impersonate a human long enough to get past the city guards. If only he can prove to the humans that Zombies can change, maybe R and Julie’s love might stand a chance. But with the rampaging Boneys heading toward the city and Julie’s father intent on killing R and his Zombie friends, the stage is set for an all-out battle between the living and the undead.

A genre-bending tale of love and transformation, WARM BODIES is a story about a boy who loves a girl…for more than just her body.

Episode 10 Review - "Darkness"

Thank god I have The Secret Circle to watch after The Vampire Diaries this week to wash away that nonsense of Jeremy leaving.

Cassie learns more about her ancestor, Francis Balcoin — who was as evil as they come, she turns to Adam when she uncovers a secret about herself that she needs kept from the rest of the Circle, including Diana. Which doesn’t work out as planned because Diana finds Adam researching dark magic and he reveals the secret of Cassie. Cassie gets mad and almost chokes/kills Adam using her dark magic. Cassie is scared of what she did and runs off after apologizing.

Meanwhile, Diana is thrilled when her grandmother Kate drops in for a visit, but Charles is suspicious of his mother's motives after Kate takes an unusual interest in Cassie. Dawn actually wants to deal with her considering she knows too much information about them. Charles says no and it seems that their relationship is on thin ice when she wants to kill his mother. Although he later confronts his mother after she disappears asking her where she was. Seems she lied to Cassie about that cure for her dark magic and almost kills Cassie. Diana and Adam set put to find Cassie and may have caught her exploding out of the box being buried.

Faye recruits a mysterious stranger named Lee (Grey Damon) to help her get her own individual powers back. And since Lee is a voodoo practitioner she seems to fall for it. Yet is doesn’t work so she goes back to confront him. Turns out Lee is not a full witch but his family has some voodoo and witch background. Lee tells Faye that he will help her achieve what she wants only if she helps him. The Circle learns more about Cassie and the dark magic she has inherited within her and just how powerful it truly is. Cassie also reveals that she likes it. Well that is a sign for some interesting things to come.

Episodes 10 Review - "New Deal"

Bonnie has a dream about the witches' massacre house, where she finds the coffins of the Originals. One coffin opens and she sees the body of Klaus with the Original Witch's necklace. Back in reality, Stefan asks Bonnie for help in hiding the coffins from Klaus. Bonnie, with help from the dead witches, makes the coffins invisible. She informs Stefan that the coffin she saw opening in her dream is the key to tormenting Klaus but it is sealed with a spell.

Klaus wants Elena and Damon to find Stefan in order to get his coffins back but when they refuse, he gets a hybrid to run over Jeremy who has been off vervain due to Tyler's influence and has been compelled by Klaus. Alaric pushes Jeremy out of the way and gets run over. His ring brings him back to life but doesn't heal him; he needs vampire blood to heal him. Alaric meets Dr. Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto), who is intrigued with his amazing ability to heal. Stefan reveals to Damon that he stopped the plan to kill Klaus to save Damon's life. Stefan then reveals his plan to torment Klaus in revenge for what Klaus turned him into and refuses to return the coffins, despite Klaus' attempts to kill Jeremy.

Elena makes a deal with Klaus to spare Jeremy's life in return for Rebekah's daggered body. When Elena reveals to Klaus that Rebekah wants him dead because he killed their mother, Klaus keeps the dagger in her. Elena asks Damon to compel Jeremy to leave Mystic Falls and move away with family friends so he can have a normal life away from the supernatural. Elena thanks Damon for everything and Damon admits that because Stefan saved him, he can't not feel guilty for wanting what he wants (Elena, his brother's girl). He then says that if he's going to feel guilty, 'he'll feel guilty about this' - and he kisses Elena.

Now what pissed me off is that it seems that Jeremy is leaving the show. Bullshit I say. Why remove him at all it seemed like he would become a “hunter” type along with Alaric. Now with him gone all we have in the normal human cast is Elena (who is getting whiny and boring to me to tell you the truth), Alaric, and Matt who shows up for two seconds every three episodes or so. Everyone else is supernatural. They could keep another human character in Jeremy?

Bitches.

Episode Eleven - "Duress"

Everyone learns of Tyler's true intentions and Emily tries to expose him until Tyler shows up at Daniel's birthday party with a gun. Conrad and Victoria use Charlotte as a pawn in their bitter divorce battle.

Pretty much that is all that went on this episode. I am not knocking the episode because it was still good. But pretty much the episode revolved around the crazy antics of Tyler and Conrad and Victoria’s impending divorce. Emily makes amends with Nolan who helps her locate Tyler and the camera whale. Emily finds it and also finds the pills that Tyler had, psychotic pills. Nolan makes a call to Tyler’s doctor brother who heads over to get Tyler. Meanwhile a sneaky Tyler finds his way to Nolan looking for the files and video he wants to use to blackmail Conrad. He sees where the whale is located, in Emily’s home, and ties up Nolan.
Later on Tyler’s brother shows up and helps Nolan. Meanwhile at the birthday party of Daniel, bickering and bribing continue between Conrad and Victoria with their son and the guests. While Tyler confronts Emily (who slips him the phone from Conrad’s dead bodyguard), forcing her at gunpoint to take out the cake and confronts everyone. Forcing Conrad to spill out the truth about David Clarke. He starts to talk when Nolan and Tyler’s brother show up and distract Tyler. Daniel and Jack tackle Tyler. Later the police find the phone and assume he killed the bodyguard. Now Conrad and Victoria can go along with their divorce without distractions.

The Devil Inside Review

By: Robert Acosta
Cast:

Evan Helmuth as David

Plot: The daughter of a possibly possessed mother travels across the world to see her detained mother, 20 years after her mother is charged with murder.

Review: A few months back, i'd say sometime in September, I was seeing trailers for a movie called The Devil Inside. It's not unusual to see a trailer for movie well before it comes out, but there were lots of trailers in lots of places for this movie and that is usually never a good sign. I liked the trailer. It seemed like a movie that would be eerie, creepy, intense, scary horror flick. Exorcism movies are usually very "out there" in content and lead to entertaining movies. However, a lot went wrong here.

First off, if you happen to do your research on a movie before you go see it, you'll notice that the movie is below the 90 minute mark. I find it very hard to take a movie seriously when it already seems like it could be rushed. Some movies do very well with getting to the point and not bullshitting around. However, a movie like this, you'd expect things to be spaced out a bit with a little more story involved. So many things that the daughter, Isabella, talks about, I would have really liked to see the whole story...or most of it.

Secondly, I understand that trailers are supposed to entice the viewers, the general public into seeing your movie. You have a minute or so to grab the viewers attention, get them to want more, and then hopefully pack the theater when your movie drops. However, there is no need to show everything that goes on in your movie. As far as I remember, only one "important" thing is not shown in the trailer. Everything else however is shown in the trailer, and that's never good.

If the trailer had not shown anything, or kept things to a minimum, the movie and its scares could have been really effective. But once you know what's going to happen, and you can pretty much see it coming from a mile away, the scares are gone. The whole purpose of the movie pretty much goes out the window.

Notice, I have not really gone into specifics about the movie. Why? There is absolutely no reason to. Once you see the trailer, you've seen the movie.

The Devil Inside had some potential. I had some hope for the movie. Didn't think it would be great per say, but a serviceable, paranormal movie. Instead, you had a movie with barely any scares, nothing that was "pushing the envelope" and an ending that will leave you wanting your money back. Nothing makes too much sense in this movie.
