Halloween At The Movie Spot

Halloween At The Movie Spot

By Jose

Well Halloween is here today and many of you were out celebrating in your own way. I love Halloween. As you saw I somewhat took over the blog this month to bring you many posts that carried the theme of horror and Halloween. I hope that many of you who visit this site enjoyed what I wrote and maybe saw something that made you go out to either see again or see for the first time. But now it has to end. Tomorrow is the first day November, and the second month in the three month holiday season. November is also the transition month between fall and winter, or Halloween and Christmas. So I thought what could be the best movie I can write about or post about that has that perfect transition. Then I found it. You may know it too, might be one of your favorites.

Nightmare Before Christmas. The Perfect transition movie. A movie that is the spirit of Halloween and Christmas combined. Which makes it the perfect movie that puts Halloween back to sleep for another year, while getting everyone good and ready for the Christmas season.

Horror Spot: Trick r Treat Review

Horror Spot: Trick R Treat DVD Review

by Jose

Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

Plot:

Five interwoven stories that occur on the same night. A couple finds what happens when they blow a jack o' lantern out before midnight, a high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer, a college virgin might have met the right guy for her, a group of mean teens play a prank that they take too far, and a hermit is visited by a special trick or treater.

Review:

So finally this damn movie was released. Straight to DVD but at least it was released. I personally have been waiting to see Trick 'r Treat ever since it was announced a year or so ago. But due to studio shenanigans it was delayed and delayed. Given a release date then delayed some more. I guess since it was something new and not a remake or sequel the studio decided it won't make money. Yet you constantly see utter shit being released in theaters. But that is for another day. On to the movie.

It was well worth the wait. Trick 'r Treat is hands down one of the best Halloween inspired movies I have seen. Notice I didn't say best horror or best movie. I know how people get when you say certain things. Back to the movie. When I think of Halloween I think of candy, jack o lanterns, ghosts, witches, zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, freaks, crazy maniacs, and that one neighbor who hates everything. That is Halloween right? Well you get all that and some more with Trick 'r Treat. From the beginning to end it's non stop fun and scares.

Trick ‘r Treat obviously takes place during a Halloween night. With the movie being an anthology. Where we have different stories taking place with different characters that all in someway or another interact with each other. To me it was a great way to showcase many characters and themes in one movie. Just like Tales of the Darkside, Creepshow, and Campfire Tales. I don't want to spoil the movie too much so if you don't want to know certain things then look away.

The sack-head kid is great and creepy as this Halloween ghoul that you see everywhere and basically carries the movie. The zombie children at the rock quarry lake are terrifying. The werewolf girls are freaking great. I loved how there transformation was done. Very similar to how werewolves turn in the Hellboy comics. With the skin being cut and ripped off to reveal the werewolf inside. Oh and for your True Blood fans Anna Paquin is a hottie in her Red Riding Hood costume and as one of the she-wolfs.

Final thought:

I highly suggest that every fan of Halloween or a fan of the mentioned classic horror anthologies pick up a copy and enjoy what I believe is a true Halloween movie. Oh if anyone has Halloween movie parties definitely include Trick r' Treat.

Originals VS Remakes Halloween

Original VS Remake: Halloween

By Jose

Happy Halloween Movie Spot visitors!

I could not think of, well actually, there could not be any other movie that is more appropriate to talk about and see than Halloween. The movie that changed the way we see serial killers and Halloween safety. John Carpenter created such a great horrifying character in Michael Myers. The silent, masked, deadly, unstoppable, psychotic monster. Someone who you would not want to see or have stalking your neighborhood at all.

The original Halloween movie was hands down a great horror movie. A classic. And it’s a simple story a psycho escapes from a hospital/prison and seeks out his family that knows nothing of his existence while his doctor searches and chases him hoping to get to the killer before he can kill anyone. Which fails obviously. The acting was great especially from the young Jamie Lee Curtis as the younger sister of Michael Myers. But the build up from the beginning of the movie to before Michael finally gets to Laurie is what I like about the movie. Because it just begins with Laurie and friends getting ready for Halloween when off to the side and background we see this guy in a mask and overalls following our characters. Until he starts killing.

The other thing I love is that (to me) Michael is the inspiration and paved the way for Jason Voorhees (Friday The 13th) and Freddy Krueger (Nightmare On Elm Street). If it wasn’t for him we would have never gotten these characters. The silent killer and almost supernatural strength and invulnerability helped create Jason while his creepy almost ghost like ability to pop out of nowhere and strike when you least expect it helped create Freddy.

Halloween is a favorite movie of mine and I make sure that I at least catch the first and some of the sequel during the Halloween season. Although I tend to stay away from part 3 Season of The Witch. If you’re a fan you know what I am talking about. The only movie that had the title and carried the part three numbering had nothing, nothing to do with Michael Myers whatsoever. It dealt with witch craft and druids creating masks that killed the person who wore it by turning the face into bugs and snakes and other gruesome things. All triggered by a commercial song for the masks. Oh yeah and they had robots disguised as humans. Why? I have no clue. The only thing that I can guess it had to do with Michael Myers and the series is that later on in the franchise Myers was supposed to be part of this pagan/druid ritual but otherwise no clue.

Now onto the 2007 Halloween. What can I say? It followed the original storyline to a certain degree but then the director decided to give Myers a somewhat new origin. Before I go on I just want to say that Rob zombie is not a good director or good movie writer. Or better yet he does not know how to make good movies. House Of A 1000 Corpses was a bastardized hillbilly version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre who’s story actually involved hillbillies. The “sequel” Devil’s Rejects, only took Rob’s favorite characters from the original and created a totally different movie that had nothing to do with the first.

Back to his Halloween. The Myers origin was fine. It worked by showing that Michael was a twisted and blood thirsty child with no remorse and emotion. Only for his sister and mother. But it could be that simple. No. So not only he was a dangerous troubled kid his stepfather and older sister verbally and physically abused him. Ok. So instead of the quick scene from the original where we see the young Michael in his clown costume killing his family and then seeing his confused and scared face, we get an half hour or so long drawn out origin that could have been condensed.

Then the real movie begins and it is pretty much the original movie condensed into the last hour or so. Making it fast paced and in your face. Overall with the glaring changes and directorial decisions the movie was tolerable.

Then Zombie decided to pull a Devil’s Rejects on the second movie of Halloween. Yet with Devil’s Rejects it was way better than the first. So by that we should have seen a great horror movie. No. We got crap. It was like Rob Zombie was given the ability to do whatever he wanted so he did just that and pretty much killed the remake franchise for Halloween. Zombie’s a hack and should stick with music videos and music.

The Spot News: John Carpenter has a Darkchylde

John Carpenter set to direct Darkchylde

Things are looking good for the film version of Randy Queen’s 90s-era classic Darkchylde comic. It’s been a couple years since WETA entered the picture and now a press release has John Carpenter signed on to direct.

Queen had this to say:

“I’m beyond thrilled that John Carpenter, one of our most important, and legendary genre directors, and the man responsible for such landmark films as The Thing, and Halloween has come on board with Weta Workshop to help bring the nightmarish tale of Ariel Chylde to the silver screen. As a horror fan, the thought of Carpenter and Weta together, beautiful dreamscapes, and multiple transformations, makes me incredibly excited.”

Horror Spot: Paranormal Activity 2 Review

Horror Spot: Paranormal Activity 2 Review

By Jose

Plot:

After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.

Review:

Since we have already reviewed this movie I will be brief and also since it has been out for a week I will be going into details about the movie so If you want to avoid spoilers reader beware.

So the sequel to one of the best ghost horror movies of last year is shockingly a welcome and terrifying addition to the first movie. Yes we essentially get the same movie as before but it is presented in such a different manner that you should not be too turned off by it. The “camera” in which the audience views the events are static security cameras with a handheld camera for various scenes. Giving us the viewers a different perspective on the family and what they go through.

Now on to something that was touched upon by the other review. The movie builds upon itself creating tense and scary moments that as the movie comes to an end leaves you shocked and scared out of your mind. But it is a slow burn approach. Not a scare every two seconds. I love movies like that. I want to see a build up of scares until the final moments in where the movie unleashes everything at you. In which Paranormal Activity 2 delivers.

Story wise Paranormal Activity 2 is similar to the first one but here is where the kicker comes in. This family that we are seeing tormented, the wife in fact, is the sister to Katie. Yes the same Katie from the first movie. And guess what Micah is in here too. Alive and well.

But what the hell is going on? Your probably asking. Well it seems that Paranormal Activity 2 takes place before the events of the first. What we are seeing is the events that lead up to the first movie and gives the reason why Katie and Micah were tormented and killed and possessed. Really great job in bridging both movies together and creating a perfect little continuity to the movies. There is also a nice twist at the end in which we see where the possessed Katie went after she killed Micah. It will leave you speechless out and wondering what will happen next.

Final Thoughts:

Overall Paranormal Activity was great and complimented the original movie without watering it down like other sequels have before.

Horror Spot: Paranormal Acitvity Re-Review

Paranormal Activity

by Jose

Plot:

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.

Review:

After watching Paranormal Activity, you might want to sleep with the lights on for a week or four.
Rarely do I find myself affected by a horror film. It has been years to really feel scared by horror movie as of late. It seems more and more filmmakers are looking to make you squirm from graphic violence, or cheer with an over-the-top kill rather than truly give goose bumps. I’m talking about an honest to goodness level of fear.

So it was truly a surprise to put on this DVD, hoping to be terrified and being richly rewarded with a slow chill moving down my spine, goose bumps, and honestly scared. But it wasn’t a series of gruesome images, or even a masked killer ready to pounce on his or her victim every two seconds; it was sometimes merely a door opening by itself. There is a slow burn that starts quietly, and as each night passes for a young couple, the darkness and what lurks in it seems a little more nightmarish.

The movie about a young couple, Katie and Micah, seem to be having some problems with their new house. They claim to hear noises and a few other things that go bump in the night. But we also find that Katie has a history of the supernatural in her past. She tells of creepy stories about being eight years old and terrorized by the sound of heavy breathing or a dark shadow standing next to her bed. When these new ghostly things begin to happen to her as an adult, she wants to simply ignore them. But boyfriend Micah is a extremely fascinated by the whole idea. He decides to set up cameras inside their home and film everything that is going on. This includes one in the bedroom meant to record what happens while they sleep. The movie starts off slow. With a couple of noises and knocks. Then the door swings. Then the shit hits the fan and we start experiencing the worst of it.

Final thought:

Like what I wrote before I love horror movies, but there has not been one in years to truly scare me. Paranormal Activity has accomplished what many have tried to do. This is a truly scary movie that should please both hardcore horror fans and casual viewers equally, something that's very difficult to do.

GO SEE IT AND GOOD LUCK GOING TO SLEEP!

Pandorum DVD “Trick Or Treat” Review

Pandorum DVD “Trick Or Treat” Review

By Jose

Plot:

A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.

Review:

Echoing sci-fi classics as 2001 and Alien, Pandorum is a terrific psychological thriller, although it does struggle at times to be coherent and original. But it's a true mindbender, and it's packed with action that moves so quickly neither the actors nor the viewers can really catch a breath, which is a good move if your plot is shaky to begin with.

In the distant, distant future, a ship has been sent from the Earth carrying a lot of people, headed to the only Earth-like planet ever found. Sometime during the journey, things go wrong. We pick up the story as an astronaut named Bower (Ben Foster) awakens from hypersleep, abruptly; he's soon followed by his commanding officer, Payton (Dennis Quaid). The rest of the crew is gone, and the only door is locked from the outside. Making matters more difficult is the amnesia that each man suffers from, owing to their having been in hypersleep way longer than intended and the appearance of Gallo (Cam Gigandet) who seems to bother and torment Payton a bit too much. Somehow, they must piece together what has happened and find out what lies behind that door - and throughout the rest of the gigantic ship.

Not only does the movie feel like Aliens and 2001, you can also see similarities to The Descent and The Abyss; really, any movie in which people are trapped in claustrophobic environments. And although the pacing is frenetic at times, the movie is really chillingly shot. On the one hand, the plot flows linearly - Bower needs to get to the ship's reactor so he can reboot it and save everyone - meaning that the actors race from scene to scene, running out of time. On the other hand, they don't piece together what's happened as quickly as they might in other, lesser films; they seem to figure things out gradually, as if assembling a puzzle in their heads. Bowers and others - and there are others - discover right away, though, that they're not really alone on the ship and that their enemies are extremely strong and fast and vicious.

Injected into this oh-my-goodness-what's-out-there madness is, well, madness. The movie's title is explained as being a sort of mental illness that affects astronauts from time to time, when they just plain go bonkers for seemingly no reason and kill everyone on board. Is that's what's happening here? Is Bower the crazy one? Or is it Payton? Who is Gallo? Are they, in fact, alone on the ship? Foster is excellent as the hero who remembers a little bit more of their mission as time elapses; Quaid, in turn, shows a few more layers than we're accustomed to seeing from him. Quaid, Foster, and Gigandet turn in convincing, full-throated performances that complement the special effects and cinematic wizardry. Often, the effects are the entire show. Now, it's true that you won't see a lot of character development here, as you might in the most cerebral of sci-fi, but what works best here is the knowledge about the situation and the characters. By spinning the tale gradually and feeding the audience only a piece at a time, director Christian Alvart dangles the mystery in front of his viewers without allowing them to settle back and solve the mystery on their own. When you're constantly kept on your toes with sudden lurches of unseen shapes and reverberating noises, you (like the characters) are concurrently kept off balance. The result is an unsettling, entertaining delight.

Final Thoughts:

I have been sitting on this review for a long time now editing and adding here and there. Not because I felt the review was bad or that the movie was bad too. I didn’t want to give a half ass review for a well done sci-fi movie.

Saw 3D Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Sean Patrick Flanery as Bobby
Chad Donella as Gibson
Costas Mandylor as Hoffman
Betsy Russell as Jill

Plot: A self proclaimed survivor of the Jigsaw traps gets put into a trap and has to find a way to get himself and the people he cares about, out alive.

Review: The plot I wrote above may be a bit misleading cause even though that is the plot, it's not the main thing everyone has their mind fixed on and it's not the only thing going on.

As for the movie, I have to say i'm gonna try and be as unbiased as I can. I'm a huge Saw fan and i'd normally be inclined to give a Saw film a 5 out of 5 but I won't be.

This is supposedly the last Saw film and if that's the case, what a way to go out. The game literally comes full circle. All the questions from previous movies have been answered and you will be left with a satisfied feeling.

The movie follows the pattern of all the other movies. You see the background story of a claimed survivor, Bobby, and Jigsaw does not like this because he knows Bobby is lying. So how does Jigsaw teach him a lesson? The only way he knows how! Through a series of traps.

I found the traps in this movie to be more disgusting than in others, which I think is a plus. If you're gonna use some badass traps, you gotta follow through with everything. Blood, guts, dismemberment, all the good stuff and boy does it deliver.

The story is pretty good too and people seem to forget that about the movies. The stories being told are actually a bit intriguing if you can look past all the gore. The lessons that Jigsaw tries to teach others can actually be used in real life. Of course, it's a load of garbage to people.

The twist in many ways was predictable but suiting. I don't think there was any other way to end the movie/series. You bring back the most controversial part of this series and it wasn't going to play a role in how it all ends? How anticlimactic would that have been?

I'll tell you now, actor Tobin Bell as Jigsaw is featured in all of like 5 to 10 minutes which I think is the smallest amount of time he's spent on any of the Saw movies except the first one. For some reason, i'm fine with that. I'm only fine with that cause it is a strong movie and the man who honestly carried the series was only in like two scenes.

Something did bother me though, it wasn't all rainbows. The acting was a bit shotty. The main detective in all this, played by Chad Donella, goes by the name of Gibson and he just seemed like a jackass to me. He didn't look like he wanted to bring down Hoffman for his roles in the Jigsaw traps. Also, the lead guy in all of this, Bobby who is played by Sean Patrick Flanery, had this nonchalant attitude about him. At times he seemed to care and others he seemed very indifferent. Which is weird cause he gets put in a trap and watches people he cares about in traps and that really isn't something you act very nonchalant about.

Critics are going to bash the hell out of this movie, they always do. I've never fully liked a lot of the top movie critics in the world. If the movie isn't starring a big name actor talking about real issues, the movie sucks.

But I beg you to stay away from those critics and take my word for it. Saw 3D is a great movie that does the other six movies justice while wrapping up the series. Saw 3D is one of the stronger films and is worth the price of admission.

Halloween Movie List

So for the past month I have posted a few lists of movies for Halloween. They all listed certain categories or types of horror movies. The Spot News: Possible characters in Wolverine 2

Wolverine 2: Possible Characters Being Used

Zen: A Japanese man “who arranges for Logan’s release” from a Candian prison and “offers to answer questions about his origin if he’ll accompany him to Tokyo”.

Shingen: Shingen’s father was the master of The Hand, an order of ninja. Instead of allowing his son to take leadership of the order, Shingen’s father killed himself and left the Hand without a master. This pretty much defines Shingen now. That’s how it works in these kinds of stories.

Kenuichio: Shingen’s illegitimate son, but not recognised as an heir. An expert Samurai, he will adopt his “Silver Samurai” guise in the movie and attack Logan “several times”.

Mariko: Shingen’s daughter, and Logan’s chief love interest.

Yukio: Logan’s bodyguard and lust interest.

Frank Sinatra: “Japan’s answer to Frank Sinatra. A Yakuza higher-up who provides Logan with information”.

Silver Samurai? YES!
The Hand? YES!

Coming Soon: SAW 3D

By: Robert Acosta

Halloween is just three days away and you know what that means already. SAW! Apparently the last Saw to the dismay and joy to many fans and non believers.

I love the Saw series down to its core but even I say enough is enough and I am wholeheartedly ready for the end of the series.

It is 6 years in the making but it couldn't come at a better time, Cary Elwes returns to the Saw games. If you remember, Elwes was the character who famously cut off his foot to escape the major game in the first Saw. He escaped the room but most people believed he ended up dying somewhere along his voyage. I was one of the very few firm believers who believed he was alive and this is definitely one of the more controversial aspects to the Saw series. As happy as and excited as I am, Cary Elwes return to the movie should have been a surprise left for the movie. Obviously the twist to it all is still unknown but what an amazing twist it would have been to have in the movie unknowingly.

Since it is the last Saw, will main characters die? Well i've already seen a clip where a main character does die and the person does not go out the way they hoped they would. Gruesome death.

Saw 3D was shot in 3D so expect to this to actually look good in 3D and for the effects to work. Saw 3D is out on Friday October 29th.

The Spot News: Chris Evans as Captain America!

Chris Evans as Captain America First Official Picture

Looks great to me. Now we need a trailer....
And to see Red Skull....

Editorial: Originals vs Sequels

October is always a month that delivers many sequels of horror movies and it seems over the year the number of sequels versus the number of original movies is expanding.

Now that argument and opinion i'll save for another day but I specifically want to talk about sequels to movies and if they are better than their predecessors.

I have a personal point of view about sequels. They're not better than the original, than the predecessor. To me. Has that always been the case? No, not always. In fact, just recently I had to ask myself if a sequel had topped its original and to me, it did.

The Rush Hour series was a very entertaining series to me. Were all the movies great? Not exactly. The first Rush Hour was really good, nice fun action and it introduced a good tag team in Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The other two, though entertaining, lost a little luster when it seems like they were trying to execute the same pattern over and over.

I'll come out and say that I am a huge fan of the SAW series, going on its 7th movie tomorrow. Even though it is extremely hard to weigh the 6 SAW sequels vs. the first SAW, the original is what started it all and I stand by the original.

That's what my argument is all about right there. The original is what starts the whole series, however the series may last. So while the sequel may great, without the original, this movie just stands alone and may not be quite as good.

Every now and then though, we get a couple of cases where the sequel really does defeat the original. In more recent years, Spider-Man 2 was seen as a much better than movie than Spider-Man and i'm inclined to agree. Before The Dark Knight and Iron Man, Spider-Man 2 was seen as the perfect superhero movie. While Spider-Man did very well, Spider-Man 2 did what a true sequel should do and blew it out the water.

I mentioned The Dark Knight which was, and still is, critically acclaimed to be one of the best movies of all time, let alone a tremendous sequel. Once again, I am inclined to agree.

Finally, and most recently, Paranormal Activity 2 ended up being much better than the original. Though the sequel followed the same pattern the original did, it had a little more style to it all.

Is it bad that sequels are sometimes better than the original? Not at all! In fact, they enhance the original when they're better.

Tomorrow, part 2 is about the increasing amount of sequels vs the declining amount of original movie ideas.

Horror-Spot: Scooby-Doo The Mystery Begins RE-Review

Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins

By Jose

What it’s about:

What brings best friends together? For Daphne, Velma, Fred, Shaggy and Shaggy's spunky pup Scooby-Doo, it's a mystery! The live-action Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins original movie takes you back to when four teenage sleuths, plus one dog detective, first met.

Review:

So Scooby Doo has about several hundred different shows and movies if not more. Which all range from classic and great to forgettable and just bad. We also seen release of two Hollywood released movies and few years ago that weren’t that bad yet were not necessary to the Scooby Doo franchise. So here comes another live action Scobby movie that gives us a look at where it all began. And you know what, besides the obvious flaws, was really entertaining.

The film is an origin story for Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang, revealing how they met and the events of their very first case. In Coolsville, Ohio the cast is introduced on the school bus. Shaggy is a nerdy outcast who is frequently picked on by a jock, normally by getting tripped every morning on the bus. Fred is the quarterback of the football team and the jock's friend, but disapproves of him picking on Shaggy. Velma is an outcast geek, and Daphne is in the drama club. At school, Shaggy's trouble is trying to get his locker door open results in him falling in a trashcan and rolling into the Principal's office, though this is clearly not the first time. Principal Deedle suggests that Shaggy try to find some friends and says he should take up a hobby like his, stamp collecting. (which plays into the plot later on in the movie). Meanwhile, a talking Great Dane named Scoobert trying to get adopted at an adoption fair with no luck. At the end of the fair he's crammed into a cage and loaded into the back of a pickup truck. Scoobert falls out and begins to wander through a graveyard, but a strike of lightning resurrects a pair of ghosts. In a blind panic, Scoobert runs off and leaps into Shaggy's house. They instantly become great friends, and Shaggy nicknames the dog "Scooby."

Shaggy attempts to smuggle Scooby to school disguised as a kid; however, when a jock trips Shaggy (again), Scooby bites the jock's leg, which starts a fight that quickly involves Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne. Both Shaggy and Fred attack the jock to protect Scooby, and Fred unintentionally disturbs Daphne and crushes Velma's science project. All four of them get six weeks of detention when the bus driver, distracted by the commotion, crashes into the school's flagpole, knocking it over and smashing into the windshield of Vice Principal Grimes' new car. As the four are in detention, they discover they share an interest in mystery stories, but all quickly get on each other's nerves. Suddenly, the two ghosts appear. The ghosts chase them into the gym during the pep rally and a third mysterious ghost, the Spectre, appears, telling everyone to leave at once. The principal decides to close the school, but the vice principal deems the incident a prank caused by the gang out of revenge for their detention, and he changes from the charge of detention to suspension. From here on the gang falls into a mystery that they need to solve to clear their names and save the school.

Now as you may have read certain reviews of mine, I tend to not spoil much of the movie I review. I am the type of person that will give you a bit of the beginning to gain some interest and then for you, the reader, to judge if you want to check out the movie or not. So with that I want to get into the actors a bit and Scooby himself. Previously we have gotten Matthew Lillard as an older Shaggy but for Mystery Begins we get a outstanding performance from Nick Palatas as Shaggy. I mean this guy was Shaggy. If you ever pictured what Shaggy would look like and act like in real life look no further then at the performance that Nick gave. And the same goes for Hayley Kiyoko as Velma. I truly have to stop and applause the casting choices for these two roles because they are honestly perfect and I hope if there are any other Scooby Doo movies that they go out of their way and bring these actors back

But that is not to say that Kate Melton as Daphne and Robbie Amell as Fred were bad actors or choices for these roles. No not at all. They were good as well. But Nick and Hayley stole the show. They became the characters. That and Fred had dark hair. Don’t know why they decided on that. Maybe there is a story about how Daphne colored turned him into a bleach blonde at some point in time in the future or whatever. But it was what it was. Scooby Doo himself was computer animated character. You know with a straight to DVD movie the effects are not going to be great but Scooby was decently done and I did enjoy bringing in Frank Welker to voice Scooby.

Final Thoughts:

Yes Scooby Doo the Mystery Begins is a straight to DVD live action movie based on a beloved classic cartoon. So automatically we should hate it. I did not. I enjoyed this movie for what it was. A glimpse into how such a great group of ghost and mystery hunters first came to be and how there friendship began and grew. Yes it has it’s faults but all movies regardless of budget, cast, director, etc all have faults. So with that I leave you with this: if you are a fan of Scooby Doo and the gang give this movie a try. You probably will not be disappointed and maybe enjoy it how I did. Plus here is hoping for another Begins-type Scooby movie with these actors.

I've always been a person to give anything a try. On top of that, if I tried something I didn't like, I didn't trash it or bad mouth it. Same ideas apply to watching movies.

I recently got to see Paranormal Activity 2, a couple hours earlier than everyone else(lucky me). I thought the movie was more than good, more like great and fantastic. The rest of the theater, or 90% of it so it seemed, completely hated the movie and trashed it. Keep in mind it was a free movie and people were still asking for their money back.

I understand that whether a movie is good or bad is completely subjective and there really is not one movie that every single person in the world loves or hates. That's fine. Can you at least appreciate the fact that the film was free, you got to see the movie hours before many many others?

In cases where you do pay movies however, I encourage you to still see it in a positive light. Remember, YOU payed for the movie, YOU wanted to see the movie. Because the movie wasn't everything you hoped it was going to be doesn't give you a reason to talk unfavorably about the movie. You made all the decisions to be there. And don't say you could do better either because 99% of the people who say that, go home, sit on their ass and do absolutely nothing about it.

I know I've loved movies that others have hated and I've hated movies that others have loved. But I don't take away from the people who put in the work to make a movie because I, as the other 99% of people, will not get up and do something better than that on screen.

On the other hand, it's assholes like that that give me a job in the first place.

The Spot News: Batman 3 movie gets an actual title!

By: Robert Acosta

The title to the 2nd Batman was pretty basic and awesome at the same time. The Dark Knight is just a cool nickname to have, no matter what it actually means. So why not continue the trend with cool titles?

The title to the next Batman film will be, The Dark Knight Rises. Now I know, maybe it's a little cheesy and cliche but I honesty like it. Didn't try to confuse you, nothing complex. By now you should know the Batman films seem to follow this kind of trend. With words like returns, forever usually attached at the end of the titles.

In some more important news that I purposely left out of the title, villain talk. Director Christopher Nolan himself said he won't be using The Riddler or Mr. Freeze as the villain in The Dark Knight Rises. So who on earth is going to be the villain?! Still no idea. The Joker will not be re-cast, Two-face is assumed dead and the two villains I mentioned above are not in.

There is talk that Nolan is trying to cast a female part in the movie. Now whether or not that means this part could be villains Harley Quinn or Catwoman is unknown. He may very well just be casting another love interest for all we know, though I don't see that making too much sense.

Whatever the case, i'm still very excited for all news Batman.

Horror-Spot: Wizards Of Waverly Place Movie RE-Review

Wizards Of Waverly Place The Movie DVD

By Jose

Halloween is not just for blood, guts, monsters, and scares. It also has a spot for fun, candy, and wizards.

I actually like the show. It is a guilty pleasure of mine. One thing that Disney does well is create movies out of their shows and or talent they have. Normally the movies they make go directly to TV or to DVD. Now besides that Wizards of Waverly Place is, on its own, a good show about a family of wizards and everything that comes with that. Bickering magical kids, crazy friends, supernatural shenanigans, etc. The movie takes all that and places them at the most ancient and popular wizard destination of Puerto Rico (playing off the Spanish heritage the family has on their mom’s side). Right off the bat the visuals are amazing. The acting is well done and keeps along the lines of the show if not better. There is plenty of action and excitement (wizard challenge between Alex and her brother Justin) along with suspense (will the Russo kids reverse that wish Alex made or will they cease to exist). The movie compliments the show really well and shows that these kids, Selena Gomez, David Henrie, and Jake T. Austin can handle themselves in a movie.

The Lost Boys 3 - The Thirst DVD “Trick or Treat” Review

The Lost Boys 3 - The Thirst DVD “Trick or Treat” Review

By Jose

Plot:

The thankless life of a vampire hunter has taken its toll on Edgar Frog. After losing best friend and fellow vamp fighter...

Review:

This should have been exactly what we got for Part 2. Obviously there is decidedly a lot more Corey Feldman content... but I don't think people are prepared for how much heart this movie has. There are several flashbacks that feature Corey Haim that are really heartbreaking in light of what you and I know in reality.

With that said I did enjoy this for what it was. A straight to DVD, third part, of a movie that really did not need one. Especially over twenty years later. The gore was great, the vampire deaths were decent, and the overall action was well done. The dialogue wasn’t as cheesy as I thought it would be. The story itself made sense with nods throughout that connected to the first one. It was funny seeing the Frog brothers back together and still crazy. The ending did feel rushed and a bit “everywhere”. Also I felt they spent a lot of time on Edgar (Corey F.) and his antics while the vampire parts was just stuck in there. What I really did like was the very end where we get a glimpse into what may be a possible new repackaged version of the Lost Boys involving werewolves.

Final Thoughts:

A little undecided about the ending, and what "future direction" that could lead to, but things are suitably bookended thus far for the existing trilogy. If your a fan of the original movie and already seen the second part, go ahead and see this as well.

The Spot News: Tony Scott wants to direct Top Gun 2

By: Robert Acosta

I'll be honest with everyone and say I haven't seen Top Gun(yet) but I do understand it's one of the movies that put Tom Cruise on the man and track of reckless stardom.

So when I hear Top Gun 2 coming and director of the first Top Gun, Tony Scott, wants to do it, it doesn't pump me up the way it will to others.

Here is what Tony Scott said to HitFix regarding Top Gun 2:

"I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now," Scott says. "These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."

"This world fascinated me, because it's so different from what it was originally. But, I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie."

But when I hear Tony Scott say he wants to create something new, not a sequel or reimagining, that gets me intrigued. I'm very tired of sequels and re-dos and all that good stuff. Let's see original ideas.

Tony Scott's latest movie, Unstoppable, may not have been too great but it did pack action, suspense and some drama so he could definitely bring all that to the next Top Gun movie.

DVD Releases October 26th

By: Robert Acosta

For me, today isn't a DVD day. Today is International Fuck Day(I've patented that line) for gamers all over. With the release of Fable III, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 and Rock Band 3, DVDs are taking a backseat for me. But I know for you, DVDs are important so I will report the list for you.

Here are the DVD releases for this fine Tuesday:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • Alien Anthology(Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy(Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • The Girl Who Played With Fire
  • Sex & The City 2
  • Sex & The City(Complete Collection)
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars(Complete 2nd Season)
  • Elf(Ultimate Collector's Edition)
  • Altitude
  • CSI: NY(S6)
  • The Venture Brothers(Season 4, Volume 1)
Lots of big collector's editions to pick up this week, along with seasons of some good shows.

The Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy would be a great pick up for someone who loves the trilogy or who hasn't seen the movies. The movies are classic and well worth a pick up.

For Sci-fi fans you've got a few things you could pick up. Another classic series of movies, Aliens Anthology would be a great pick up. The Girl Who Played With Fire is a highly remarked film that people will like and could be a good pick up.

In terms of TV, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Venture Brothers Season 4 are both great pick ups. The Clone Wars is a great show for any Star Wars fan and Venture Bros is down right hilarious. You can't go wrong with either.

I have to admit, i'm not a big fan of the movie Elf. I think it's Will Ferrell's worst movie and I really don't see why everyone likes it so much. Nonetheless, the Ultimate Collectors Edition contains 2 discs with extra tidbits on them and some goodies in the box as well.

Originals VS Remakes Friday The 13TH

Original VS Remake: Friday The 13TH

By Jose

Now forgive me but I will most likely jump around to different points and comparisons between the original and remake of Friday The 13TH.

So now onto the most famous masked killer of Crystal Lake, Manhattan, and even space. Yes space.

Jason Voorhees.

Well to begin the most obvious change between the new version and the original is the killer himself. Or herself in this case. The original killer of Crystal lake was Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother, who stalked and murdered the teenagers who are preparing Camp Crystal Lake for re-opening. She is determined to make sure the camp does not reopen after her son drowned in the lake, because two staff members, who were supposed to be watching him, were having sex. I will get back to the sex part in a minute because it is important. The 2009 version basically condenses the entire original movie into a few minutes and we are then left with just Jason killing whoever stumbles into the camp and lake area. I found that the 2009 movie did the right thing here. They kept the origin story line while not wasting a whole movie on just that and went straight into Jason himself being the killer.

Now before I go on I want to address the remake bubble. Hollywood knows that these movies will make money if done right. But what Hollywood doesn’t understand is that if you hire crappy people to create the movie and depend on just the name of the movie to generate money they are screwing themselves. Another problem they have is that they believe the more butts in the theater the more money so then the rating of the movie gets changed. So a horror movie that has done well being rated R becomes a “teen-downed” version rated PG-13 just to make more money.

So what does that have to do with anything? Considering that some PG-13 horror movies do well. I agree. But not with these characters. Friday the 13Th remake would not have been great if it was PG-13, hell the original movies would have failed if it wasn’t rated R. Why? Because of this: “ her son drowned in the lake, because two staff members, who were supposed to be watching him, were having sex “
That is the origin of Jason and the whole Friday The 13TH franchise. Jason killed and kills anyone who goes to Camp Crystal Lake. He also targets those who are, who were, or who did have sex throughout the movies. Nudity and sex is an important part of Friday The 13th as is the mask and machete.

Back to the movies. Out of all the remakes recently done. I felt that Friday The 13TH stayed true to what made the originals great. Instead of just remaking and changing and messing around with the character they just went ahead and breathed a new life into the franchise. The originals are still there, yes even Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason in space, but now we have a current version that compliments and to a certain degree a better movie.

Horror-Spot: Drag Me To Hell RE-Review

Drag Me To Hell

By Jose

Plot

A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.

Review
Christine Brown (Alison Loham) is a loans officer at a bank but is worried about her where she is going in life. She's in competition with a colleague for an assistant manager position and isn't too sure about her status with a boyfriend. Worried that her boss will think less of her if she shows weakness, she refuses a time extension on a loan to an old woman, Mrs. Ganush, who now faces foreclosure and the loss of her house. In retaliation, the old woman place a curse on her which, Christine learns, will result in her being taken to hell in a few days time. With the help of a psychic, she tries to rid herself of the demon, but faces several hurdles in the attempt.

Drag Me To Hell surprised many by actually being a good “classic” horror movie. Of course with Sam Raimi directing what do you expect. The scares are great and unexpected. The atmosphere of the movie felt suspenseful. I mean there is plenty more to say of the good of this movie. It didn’t need graphic gore and nudity like most horror movies use too much of. It felt like a great horror movie from the 80’s.

But there was a couple things that got to me. Too much use of CGI. There were many scenes where it worked and was needed. The hell grapping scenes, the ghosts/spirits, and a couple of stuff here and there. But then CG was used a couple of times that should have been skipped. Green vomit that, yes looked gross, but obviously added later on. You see it pouring on the girl but yet she is clean and dry. If you were going to go for it they should have went all the way and added it physically to the actress. The same thing later on involving a arm and mouth. Certain CG effects were sloppy and turned me off.. Yet the practical/physical effects were great. The possessed goat, make up effects, were all good. I would have liked them to use more of that instead of CGI.

Final Thoughts

The early trailers for Drag Me to Hell dubbed it as "the return to classic horror", and for once at least, they are correct.

Sam Raimi managed to incorporate genuine thrills and terror using the old-fashioned format of surprise, misdirection and suggestion. As a frequent viewer of horror films, little surprises me, but in this film I was caught off-guard several times while watching it.

While the majority of the movie is kept on a serious and foreboding level, much like the original "Evil Dead", Raimi can't help but throw in elements of the absurd and slapstick during some of the more horrific scenes, reducing the tension and echoing the latter 2/3 of the "Evil Dead" trilogy.

While I have nothing against the modern trend of horror movies to provide shocks merely in the form of how much blood and gore they spill, this flick was wonderfully refreshing. It's a must-see, not just for Raimi fans, but for anyone who loves a good scary story and a great movie in general.

Altitude DVD Horror Review

Altitude Review

By Jose

Plot:

After a mysterious malfunction sends their small plane climbing out of control, a rookie pilot and her four teenage friends find themselves trapped in a deadly showdown with a supernatural force.

Review:

This is your captain speaking, please buckle up because we are in for a thrill ride that will leave you breathless...

Well, this movie proved to be somewhat of a surprise. Initially I had not heard much about it prior to watching it. I thought I would give it a go, regardless, being a fan of horror and all.

First off, lets start with the acting. I have to say that the few people that the movie actually revolved around all did a great job. Especially Jessica Lowndes (who played Sara) and Jake Weary (playing Sal). Now, the character Sal is someone who you just want to get up to and punch right in the face, so pompous, self-centered and condescending. And Jake Weary put in an amazing performance in this role. He was actually the one that came off best on the screen, despite having a role as a character you just instinctively get to loathe. Julianna Guill (playing Mel), Ryan Donowho (playing Cory) and Landon Liboiron (playing Bruce) all seemed to be supporting cast, as their character didn't really stand out as much as the characters Sal and Sara.

Given the cast was primarily all teens, this movie stands out from the many other teen horror movies available, because this one isn't full of dull dialogue, premarital sex, pointless nudity, and just general stupidity. This movie is beyond that, and it is one of the better teen horror movies I have actually seen. With a horror movie like this, it is proved again (though it doesn't happen that often), that you don't need a multi-million dollar budget to make a quality movie that is worth watching and that will leave the audience cringed to the edge of their seats.

The setting of Altitude was fabulous. It amazed me that the movie makers managed to make a whole movie this interesting without going much further than the limited space of a small private airplane. And it worked so well. Especially because there was a constant scene of dread and claustrophobia lurking in the movie. You are left wondering what is going on throughout the entire movie, and the one twist that was in the movie (towards the end) put it all into perspective and brought the movie to a wholesome circle.

Now about that huge cthullu like monster in the movie. That added to the whole build up of thrill and suspense. From the first time we see a glimpse to the full out reveal. It was so out of the box and interesting choice.

Final Thoughts:

I highly recommend that you watch Altitude if you haven't already seen it, because it really is a gem in the horror genre.

Can't say I was surprised to see Paranormal Activity 2 at the top this weekend. Lots of hype and buzz surrounded it so people were going to rush out and see it.

Jackass 3D follows up its historic weekend with another solid weekend. Jackass 4 in the making thanks to these two weekends of success? More than likely.

Next week we see Saw 3D come to the big screen and I can almost guarantee it'll take the top spot. Paranormal Activity 2 could sneak up on Saw and take the top spot but I'm putting my money on Saw.

Cloverfield “Trick Or Treat” Review

Cloverfield “Trick Or Treat” Review

By Jose

Plot:

Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people.

Review:

The big, city destroyer, monster genre has been forever in the grasp of the Japanese. Just look at there baby Godzilla and all his movies and also Gamera and all his movies. No one did these movies better then they have. But along comes Cloverfield that changed the playing field. Regardless of all the attempts and movies involving big beasts and monsters that America has made and the failed attempt of recreating Godzilla for ourselves. They all failed. But Cloverfield changed all that. Mixing the human POV element, the survival aspect, along with a mysterious and briefly seen in full monster rampaging and destroying the city, Cloverfield delivered what we have been waiting for. Our own Godzilla that worked and worked well.

Dark Days “Trick Or Treat” Review

Dark Days “Trick Or Treat” Review

By Jose

Plot:

After surviving the incidents in Barrow, Alaska, Stella Olemaun relocates to Los Angeles, where she intentionally attracts the attention of the local vampire population in order to avenge the death of her husband, Eben.

Review:

I am going to be honest here. The sequel to 30 Days of Night was bad. The only thing it had going for it was the various and death scenes, kills, and gore. Although the blood was rather watery and fruit juice color at times. If you want to see a better version of Dark Days pick up the comic book or better yet just forget this exists and see the first movie.

30 Days Of Night “Trick or Treat” Review

30 Days Of Night “Trick or Treat” Review

By Jose

Plot:

After an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.

Review:

30 Days of Night was a great comic book by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith that screamed to be made into a movie. Well it was done and done very well. The only complaint I had throughout the movie is that the vampires spoke another “vamp” language, where in the comics they spoke English. All the taunts and various other dialogue between the vampires and humans was lost when they did this. But otherwise the adaptation was pretty damn good. So considering that this is a feeding frenzy vampire movie, do not expect glitter and hunky werewolves and wooden performances from the lead actress. No. Brace yourself for the gore and violence and the dread that comes with a town that experiences thirty days and night and the horde of vampires that take advantage of it. This is what a vampire movie should be about.

Paranormal Activity 2 Review

By: Robert Acosta

Plot: A family is haunted by a demon that just won't go away. They install security cameras all over the house to try and figure out what exactly is going on.

Review: Horror movies have definitely lost their luster these days. I’m not Horror aficionado or anything like that but I’ve seen my fair share of them and my associate here at The Movie Spot has filled me in on tons of them. I can just tell Horror movies have lost their luster. With Paranormal Activity 2, they show everyone else how it’s done.

What makes this movie so great is what makes people kind of turn away from the movie. It isn’t the scare every second or every minute like people would like and have been spoiled to. It’s a much better and much slower process than that. It is a gradual and build up kind of scary movie. Slowly but surely, the scares come. In bunches and they’re just sick. Sick in a good way of course, the way people use it nowadays.

I wish I could talk about the content of the movie but damn, I would be giving away way too much. I’ll talk about it generally just because I want people to see this movie. The twist is tremendous. The way the whole story plays out makes not only this movie great but I think, enhances the first one. Rarely do movies accomplish that.

Onto the is it scary question. It is down right scary and creepy. No movie has freaked me out like this. The original Paranormal Activity got to me and the first SAW movie definitely got to me. This one only doubled my paranoia and that is the exact feeling I only wished to come out with.

My only problem with it is that, nobody ends up being smart. I don’t think it ever portrays real life in any small manner. I know it’s just a movie but I’ve always believed that movies portray real life in some method. In this case, people just don’t think.

The argument will come up about whether or not the sequel is better than the original. That rarely happens but you’ve definitely got an argument in this case. I stand very strongly on original movies always being better than sequels because the original obviously starts it all and makes the sequel what it is. But I have a hard time arguing that for this movie. In fact, it could be vice-versa. The sequel may have made the original better.

I want to add this. The general public may bash this movie. I don’t know fully why but it could be because of their ignorance. Call it what you will, don’t go by their word. I’m not saying my word is above everyone else’s but take my word on this. Trust me, the movie is worth it.

Coming Soon: Paranormal Activity 2

By: Robert Acosta

With October comes tons and tons of horror/halloween type movies. Among those usually is a bunch of sequels, remakes or trilogies(In Saws case it's like a double trilogy +1). This October is no different as Paranormal Activity 2 is just a day away.

When I initially heard about this I thought, does this movie need a sequel? Didn't the first movie do so well and end up bring really great? Well that's the problem and the reason why there is a 2nd movie.

Paranormal Activity 2 looks like it's going to follow a family and their baby, who just looks possessed or just something is wrong with it. So, everything that follows has to do with the baby and thus the Paranormal Activity begins.

It's a good premise just because it looks damn creepy so far from what has been shown in trailers and clips. Taking something innocent and turning it into what it looks like they are could very well work.

Only thing that bothers me is that it looks way too much like the first movie. What new tricks can they pull out to make this movie creepier and scarier than the first? Will it even be on par with the first?

I would like to think so. I give all movies a chance to entertain me in some form, and I think this one will entertain myself and others. However, I do think people will crowd it with negativity and talk of how they never needed to make a sequel, that's just natural of people to do. Rant about something they knew they weren't going to like but they saw anyway.

Nonetheless, Paranormal Activity 2 is out on Friday October 22nd. Bring a fresh pair of underwear.

DVD Releases October 19th

By: Robert Acosta

Sorry for the lateness on the DVD releases but time flies when you're catching Unstoppable in theaters a month before it is out(Really debating on whether or not to post the review, even though I signed a disclaimer saying I'm not supossed to really talk about it.)!

Enough of my boasting. On to the DVDs!:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • Predators
  • Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show(Blu-Ray only)
  • Mirrors 2: Unrated
  • Psycho(Blu-Ray only)
  • Moulin Rouge(Blu-Ray only)
I know, there seems like a small bunch of DVDs to pick from this week but October is almost finished, so DVDs are at their lowest.

If I had to pick from the small list above, I would definitely pick up Predators. Was it anything like the originals? The jury is still out there. Is the movie good on its own? Yes. Good story, nice action, good twist at the end and of course, predators!

If you have a Blu-Ray player or PS3, Moulin Rouge would be a good pick up. Extremely good musical, probably even better than the original. For me, this is what put Ewan McGregor on the map. Not Star Wars. Tremendous singers and extremely catchy songs.

Next week is going to look very much like this one, nothing much to buy. I promise that November is definitely going to be great so save up!
