Asylum - Horror Spot DVD Review
By Jose
Plot:
Six college students discover their dorm was once an insane asylum that conducted gruesome lobotomy's on its teenage inmates during the 1930's.
Cast:
Sarah Poemer (Madison), Jake Unworthy (Holt), Mark Rolston (The Doctor), Travis Van Winkle (Tommy), Ellen Hollman (Ivy), Carolina Garcia (Maya), Cody Kasch (String), Randall Sims (Rez), Andrea Powell (Carol)
Review:
Soon after arriving at her new dormitory digs, Madison (Sarah Roemer) meets shaggy-haired, dime-a-dozen, hunk-o-rama Holt (Jake Muxworthy), vapid whore Ivy (Ellen Hollman), socially retarded String (Cody Kasch), arrogant loudmouth Tommy (Travis Van Winkle) and feisty Latina Maya (Carolina Garcia). When the gang bonds over booze and a mutual hatred of their RA Rez (Randall Sims), they learn that a locked wing of their fancy new dormitory was once an insane asylum that was led by a kooky doctor (Mark Rolston) who liked to perform violent experiments on his patients. Their decision to explore the locked wing backfires when the very corporeal ghost of the long dead doctor escapes to “cure” their emotional demons.
Each of the main characters has a troubled back-story which they proceed to explain for 5 minutes each.. "My father used to molest me", "I used to be a druggie", "I used to be obese", "I've always been too awkward to make friends","my boyfriend used to beat me". Also what was the point of the films opening scene have to do with the main character (Madison)? It was never followed up. When the killer Doctor confronts each of his victims, the character finds themselves suddenly transported to a place where they suffered years ago. Sometimes he kills them in this dream world, but sometimes his ghost just shows up in the dorm to kill. Sounds a bit like Freddy Kruger right?
Overall the movie is what it is. Not perfect but not horrible. The cast was decent and did their jobs. Actually liked that Travis Van Winkle was given a decent character to play besides the arrogant jock asshole type. Asylum is a fine movie to watch if you like B - Horror movies.
