Top Ten Movies 2011: Number One

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 1: Drive

Drive was the perfect movie for me this year. A movie that appeared out of nowhere and floored me. To borrow a line I said in my review for Drive: "I could not imagine myself fully enjoying a car/action movie for more than being just that. Yet Drive went beyond that and then some."

The acting alone was so great. Especially from our anit-hero Driver, Ryan Gosling. For a character that is supposed to carry the movie, he barely spoke a word. Yet I was captivated by his presence and actions. He didn't need to speak. Ryan Gosling is a phenomenal actor and Drive just shows that he is far beyond anyone else. Yes I just said that.

But the acting wasn't the only thing that made Drive the number one movie for me. Of course you have the story and the other actors, who were all great. The director did a wonderful job. But the soundtrack stands out as a "character" all on it's own. Music in movies are used as background noise or used to carry the film along and enhance the movie. Drive's soundtrack does just that and also conveys the emotion of the scenes that is not said in words.

Drive shows to me that there can be great movies made that do not have to be a sequel or prequel or cartoon/toy based or a remake. Dive is my number one movie of the year and I highly recommend everyone to see the movie.

Number 1 movie of 2011 is...

Honestly, me and co-blogger Jose Diaz agree and disagree on many things but this was a slam dunk choice. The most flawless movie of the year. Ryan Gosling plays one of the better characters in a long time. Mind you, this character doesn't say much and you never get his name, but you don't need it. His actions speak much louder than his words and Gosling kills this role. Action, suspense, gore, action, mystery, action, love, passion, action. It is hands down the best film of the year in my back, and in the overall book of The Movie Spot.

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Two

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 2: Attack The Block

Attack The Block came out of nowhere and kicked my ass. Hands down I had a blast watching this movie. The story was great. The cast was great. The alien creatures were scary and badass to see in action. I was lucky to get the chance to catch Attack The Block, and I am so thankful for that chance.

What made Attack the Block stand out and become the number two movie on my list was the great young cast and the unique look of the alien creatures. These pure black furry beasts. With glowing rows of sharp, deadly teeth. The kids were your normal run of the mill hooligan teens who set out to protect their housing building or block.

Go out and see Attack The Block. I highly recommend it.

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Three

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 3: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2

Of course I was going to include the last Harry Potter film on my list. And I had a real fight over what position it will be in. So finally it landed on my number three spot.

Hands down this was a great ending to the movie franchise. Action and emotion just ran every where. And I want to see who did not choke up or flat out cry during this movie. Because I sure did.

Now it was sad to see our characters story come to an end, but considering many of us grew up with these films and also the books, it was a nice goodbye and thank you.

Almost there, the runner up to the best movie of the year, #2...

Back in 2009 when the first Sherlock Holmes film came out, I believe I had it at #1, the best movie of 2009 for me. Here we are in 2011 and...well Sherlock Holmes just missed out on the top spot. It's weird to say this but, the sequel was much better than the original, probably by every stretch of the imagination. The ante seemed to be raised all around. There was a little more wit to it, a great amount of action, good storytelling. A great acting job all around, which is something you'd normally expect from the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and company.

Rounding out the top 3 movies of 2011, #3...

This was a very easy choice. The signs all pointed to having Mr. Potter in at #3. Part 2 of the Deathly Hallows, the final installment of Harry Potter, was more action packed and more emotional than Part 1, but that is exactly what lands it in the top 3 movies of 2011. For those who have read the book, you know what is going to happen, but watching it play out in front of you is a bit magical to watch.

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Four

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 4: The Adventures of Tintin

The best animated/CGI movie for this year, barely beating out Winnie The Pooh. Lots of action and adventure. Good comedic moments. The "cast of characters" were represented well. It was a great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and had tons of fun watching it.

#4 movie on the top movies of 2011..

A franchise in dying need of a reboot, just seeking redemption, trying to find its way back from the hell that the Rat (Brett Ratner) put them in. X-Men First Class was essential to Marvel having a good year but more important, for the future of the X-men movie franchise, this needed to be good. And it delivered in most ways. The timeline is a little off, both in X-men movie timeline and in comic book timeline but I, and almost everyone else, can put that aside because the movie was great. A good amount of action, story, great amount of characters and character development and future set up for more great movies. I personally couldn't ask more from this movie.

#5 On The Best Movies of 2011 list

While I had my doubts on everything Super 8 could have been and what it looks like it was going to be, i'm glad to have been proven wrong. What initially looks like a full on monster flick ends up being a coming of age kind of story. You follow a group of young kids working on a movie, really just having fun with it, when they're shooting near a train track and a oncoming train derails. Something escapes from said train and moves into town and starts terrorizing it. My biggest fear, as was Jose's biggest fear, was that we were not going to see this monster. It cause havoc all across the town, murder thousands (or hundreds cause it seemed like a small town) and you'd never get even a glimpse of it. Luckily, we saw it enough and enjoyed it. Not as menacing in size when compared to the other JJ Abrams monster in Cloverfield, but still large and in charge. A very nice story that really breaks into lots of different small narratives where you learn a little bit about each character.

6th best movie of 2011

It certainly isn't the only superhero movie on my top 10 list, but it certainly brought a lot of hype. You can't just throw out a Captain America movie, it has follow the character storyline (sort of) already laid out in the Marvel comics and comic book fans are some of the most die hard fans in the world. Mess up their baby, and the backlash will begin and almost seemingly, never stop. Luckily, they got this one right. Chris Evans plays a great Steve Rogers/Captain America, which most think he would anyway because he's played a superhero before, I guess that counts for something. The story held true and in respect to the comics, and the ending left everyone chomping at the bit for next years Avengers movie. Action packed, decent story, great set up for future movies.

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Five

Jose' Top Ten 2011

Number 5: Judas Kiss

"If you had a second chance, would you grab it?"

That tag line says it all.

Judas Kiss deals with just that chance. A down on his luck and "loser" filmmaker, gets thrown in a situation in which he has the chance to change his past and his future.

Judas Kiss has a little bit of something for everyone, but most especially, it is a story that every viewer can relate to: reflection upon one's own life, regret over decisions made, and what you might have done differently if you could.

I am glad to have had a chance to see this movie and include it on my top ten list of 2011.

*Side Note - There will be full on review for Judas Kiss soon. So keep on eye out for it.

Best 3D movie of the year is

If you spent anytime at the movie theater this year, and the picture above is all too familiar. We as movie fans must come to accept that 3D has essentially become the norm for just the regular experience of watching a movie. Most movies are in 3D now, whether converted or actually shot in 3D, and it doesn't seem like this "enhanced" showing of movies will be going away anytime soon. Here is the award for best 3D movie of the year:

Robert Acosta:

Honorable Mentions: A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Winner: Hugo

RA: "While there were so many movies that qualified for this award, only a few really showed the effort of pulling off 3D nicely. The effects in A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas were really good, things popping out, looking like they were moving towards you and even the fun poking at the 3D concept in general were all very nice. But, Hugo really pulled it off the best. I can't tell you if the movie was shot in 3D but judging by how beautiful everything looked, it must have been."

Jose Diaz:
Honorable Mention: The Three Musketeers
Winner: Transformers: Dark of The Moon

JD: "I look at 3D as an enhancing device for movies and it helps when filmmakers film their movies in 3D instead of converting afterwards. Transformers 3 and Musketeers had the best use of 3D to me this year."

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Six

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 6: X-Men: First Class

Really? Another comic book action movie?
Why not?

X-Men: First Class was freaking great. Hands down better than the original X-Men and X-Men 2. And that is not knocking those movies becasue I do like them a lot. But X-Men: First Class blew them out of the water. Great cast and great story. The action was done well. The pacing was decent. Little cameos here and there. Michael Fassbender and James MacAvory were so great together. Having people behind the camera that want to do these characters justice. All made this film one of the best Marvel movies made outside of Marvel's own hands.

Now hurry and make another one!

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Seven

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number Seven: Crazy, Stupid, Love

I am not a romantic/ romantic comedy movie person. They upset me. But every so often I do catch one or two. This time it was Crazy, Stupid, Love. I found it to be a really delightful film about a husband and wife falling away from each other and then ultimately finding that love that they lost. All with help from a womanizer in Ryan Gosling, who is in need of love not lust. It just happens to be with the daughter of Steve Carrell's character. But the thing I liked about the movie is that is wasn't about the parents love or the daughters love it also shows the impact of the divorcing couples young son. Such a good movie and to me not a run-of-the-mil rom/com.

Best Animated Movie of the Year (2011)..

Animated movies are special kind of movies, more so than any other genre of movies. Each genre leaves an impact with you, no matter what it is but there is something about animated films that can really touch you much more than any other movie can. It seems that year by year there are more classic animated films being produced. This year was a bit slim pickings, but there's still a couple of movies that deserve attention. Here they are:

Robert Acosta:

Honorable Mention: The Adventures of Tin Tin

Winner: Winnie the Pooh

RA: "It was really a two horse race this year and you could really say one movie was #1 animated movie of the year while the other was 1A or 1B. Winnie the Pooh was just too damn cute and was the perfect example of how to take a childhood cartoon and really convert it with respect and justice to the story and characters." Jose Diaz: Honorable Mention: Winnie the Pooh Winner: The Adventures of Tin Tin

7th Best movie of the year is...

There is a good chance that you may not have heard of this movie, and if you did you certainly didn't care too much to watch it. I hope this'll help put it on the map because it deserves to be on everyone's radar. Win Win, starring Paul Giamatti, follows a lawyer and his volunteer work as a wrestling coach as he has to take on a lost soul teenager with a great interest in wrestling and in dire need of a family. It's the combination of a compelling story, a really believable story and Paul Giamatti doing what he does best, put an oscar worthy performance forward. It's a really heart warming story all around with great performances given all around.

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Eight

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 8: Winnie The Pooh

Yes the honey bear who is stuffed with fluff is my Number 8 choice. To put it simply Winnie The Pooh brought back all those wonderful childhood memories. The traditional animation. The characters. The beautiful songs. The laughs. Everything about Winnie the Poof was perfect for me and then some.

Best Horror Movie of the Year (2011)

If the picture doesn't tell you enough, this award is for the horror movie of the year. The horror movie genre has suffered a bit from multiple sequels of films and an audience that believes its already seen everything that the horror genre has to offer. That doesn't mean that there weren't any horror movies to talk about! Here they are:

Robert Acosta:

Honorable Mentions: Grave Encounters, Insidious

Winner: Paranormal Activity 3

RA:  "Say what you will about the Paranormal Activity series but guaranteed if anyone were put in the situations that the families in this trilogy were put in, we'd all be shitting bricks. Guaranteed."

Jose Diaz:

Honorable Mentions: Grave Encounters

Winner: Insidious

JD:  "Insidious took a new take of scares and haunting with it’s use of the astral plane and out of body experience. While Grave Encounters renewed the found footage horror genre."

8th Best movie of the years goes to..

It's rare a movie can take a sickness as truly devastating and scary as cancer and have respect for it, and a make a successfully funny movie but 50/50 was just that. That was my biggest worry going into watching the film, how long would it be before I would start thinking that it was bad or disrespectful to find this movie funny? Well, that question never crossed my mind. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen are a great pairing, and with the right story, this movie is a part of my top 10 list for the year. A true blend of drama, comedy and some real life emotion and attachment to it makes 50/50 so great.

The 9th best movie of the year is....

MA NAH MA NAH!

A almost late addition to the party but a welcome one nonetheless. The Muppets movie was easily one of the best times I had at the theater this year. It has everything you could really ask of a movie. Made you laugh, made you sing, made you care about the characters and most of all, it was just damn entertaining. Maybe a reflection on the world based on the fact that the Muppets really haven't been around for a while but they showed, they can get everyone back in a heartbeat. The songs will be stuck in your heads for weeks, they're just super catchy and simple. Gotta hand it to the Muppets. Comeback of the year?! Maybe.

Best Comedy of the Year (2011)

One of the most important things to do in life is to laugh. I don't think it really matters how or at what, but the feeling of laughter is needed in a content/happy life. Movies are one of the best outlets for laughing and getting the comedy to the masses, and every year there are a few movies that really stick out and cause laugh induced injuries. Let's take a look at the best comedies of the year:

Robert Acosta:

Honorable Mentions: A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, Horrible Bosses, Bridesmaids, Hangover 2.

Winner: 30 Minutes or Less

RA: "A strong field of movies that range from really funny to decently funny but it was hard to beat 30 Minutes or Less in my opinion. Bridesmaids came the closest, but 30 Minutes or Less had me laughing from almost start to beginning."

Jose Diaz:

Honorable Mentions: Horrible Bosses

Winner: Bridesmaids

JD: "Bridesmaids surprised me tremendously. While I found Horrible Bosses to be way better than Hangover 2"

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Nine

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 9: Thor

It was going to be between Thor and Captain America for the number nine spot on my list but Thor hammered (haha) the Captain. Thor was the next big Marvel movie after Iron Man that everyone had their eyes on. Especially with tying in the Norse god characters in the "real world" of the Marvel movie universe. But to me it worked wonderfully. I great blend of science and mythology. Chris Hemsworth was Thor. The powerful, arrogant god of thunder who learns humility. Hemsworth delivered a great performance along with Tom Hiddleston who brought Loki to life. To me Hiddleston's Loki was leagues better than Hemsworth's Thor. Stealing the show so to speak. So these two actors cemented their place on my top ten list.

The 10th best movie of 2011 is...

Something about this year of movies made it really hard to put together a definitive top 10 and be happy with it. It took much longer than last year, which is a good thing in retrospect. So many great movies this year, it was difficult narrowing a long list of 60 movies down to 10. In a way, I kind of cheated. You'll see how in a minute. I do want to give some recognition to 3 movies that were in top 10 contention for me but just missed the cut. Thor, Paranormal Activity 3 and Immortals are not in my top 10. All great movie, all with enough logic and reason to deserve a spot in the top 10, but overall, the choices in my top 10 were slightly ahead.

Let's move forward and start the list!

So the 10th best movie of the year is.....wait...there's 2 movies at #10?! NO WAY! I CHEATED!...

The Adjustment Bureau was a movie that brought a lot of originality, a lot of heart and a lot of character to a very simple concept. Everything in their world was planned out by a being much more powerful than them, a being that they never saw. Well everyone but David Norris (Matt Damon) never saw. Norris wouldn't go down without a fight though once he realized his life wasn't really in his hand. He went to hell and back to be able to gain his free will, earn his free will. It's that kind of heart (and overall story of the movie) that lands Adjustment Bureau at #10.

My 2nd movie at #10...

I'm 100% sure that this won't be the last you hear of 30 Minutes or Less in our award season. In a year stacked with a lot comedies, a lot of familiar comedies with heavy hitters in the cast, it seemed like 30 Minutes or Less didn't have a chance. But with the established Jesse Eisenberg developing a nice comedic repertoire, the over exaggeration of Aziz Ansari and great villainous roles from Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Michael Pena, 30 Minutes or less looks like a strong contender for Comedy of the year.

Does it seem like I cheated putting 2 movies for 1 spot? Maybe. I just couldn't deny these two movies in my top 10.

Stay tuned for the rest of the list!

Top Ten Movies 2011: Number Ten

Jose's Top Ten 2011

Number 10 : Super 8

I was not expecting to like this movie. I felt they were going to pull off some dumb trick where the alien/beast was not going to be revealed or partially shown until the very end. What I did get was a really great and enjoyable coming of age movie. A movie where average kids with a love of movie making were thrown into a weird and horrible situation. The young cast were all phenomenal considering most were first time actors.

Coming Soon: War Horse

Best Action Movie of 2011

Action movies are a dime of dozen. In this day and age it's pretty easy to make an action movie to keep peoples attention but it's not as easy to make an action movie that is actually fun to watch the whole way through without thinking how cheesy it could be. Only one can be the best, here is the best action movie of 2011. Robert Acosta: Best Action Movie: Winner: Immortals Runner Ups: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Fast Five Robert Acosta: "Immortals brought a lot of wall to wall, unrated, unforgiving action that I could watch over and over." Jose Diaz: Best Action Movie:
Winner: Immortals

The Adventure’s Of Tintin Review

The Adventure’s Of Tintin - Movie Review

By Jose

Plot:

Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. But someone else is in search of the ship.

Voice Cast:

Jamie Bell (Tintin), Andy Serkis (Captain Haddock/Sir Francis Haddock), Daniel Craig ( Ivanovich Sakharin/Red Rackham), Simon Pegg (Inspector Thompson), Nick Frost (Inspector Thompson), Toby Jones (Silk), Tony Curran (Lt. Delcourt), Mackenzie Crook (Tom), and Snowy

Review:

Hands down my favorite animated movie this year. The Adventures Of Tintin was a delight to watch.

Steven Spielburg has finally had a chance to bring Tintin to the big screen, and with a great team behind him (Peter Jackson, Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish) delivered a great and fun film in time for the holidays. I have not had a chance to see/read the original Tintin comics but I did see the animated TV show from the 90’s. Now getting a chance to see a great full movie adaptation.

The story of the movie combines three of Tintin's most beloved outings: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure. Starting with Tintin buying the model ship “The Unicorn”, he is confronted by a jittery man wanting to but it from him. Tintin refuses and is warned by the man to watch out for problems caused by that ship. Tintin is then again confronted by another man wanting the ship as well. Again Tintin refuses and heads home to find out why these people were so adamant to buy the ship. He learns of the legend of the Unicorn. Once home he finds his apartment in shambles and the ship gone. Thankfully the piece that broke off earlier due to Snowy and a stray cat is still there. He finds a note in the cylinder. A riddle. Later on the same man from before (the fat one) comes by again to warn Tintin but is gunned down. Leaving a clue for Tintin to find. The twin inspectors, played brilliantly by Pegg and Frost, help Tintin and warn him of a pickpocket roaming around. Which, funny enough, they get pickpocket by the thief. He fails due to the twins attaching a rubber band to his wallet. Tintin is not fortunate enough though and looses his wallet and the note.

Long story short Tintin is kidnapped by Sakharin and is introduced to Captain Haddock (the drunken captain) after escaping his cage. The drunken captain. The trio or Tintin, Captain Haddock , and Snowy escape. They are once again thrown in trouble when Sakharin’s men find them in the ocean and try to shoot them with their plane. Some heroics later and we find our team flying for Morocco for the other piece of the puzzle. Soon stranded in the desert, Haddock sobers up and recounts the tale of his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock and the real Unicorn ship. Soon after the team find the other piece to the puzzle and beat Sakharin finding the treasure. But not really. They find a piece of the treasure or what Sir Francis Haddock was able to keep when the Unicorn sunk. Leaving another clue leading Tintin, Haddock, and Snowy to the location of the sunken Unicorn and the rest of the legendary treasure, and leaving us hanging, in a good way. Now I want another movie!

Throughout the film we are treated with plenty of action and adventure along with nice amounts of comedy. Then you have Snowy and the drunken Captain Haddock, and you have such a fun film. The Adventure’s Of Tintin made use of motion capture to create the CG animated film. So we not only have the voice talent of the actors but also the movement and nuisances of them too. The CGI was great too. There were some parts of the movie where it left me wondering if that was an actual real life shot or animated. Funny enough it was the desert camp they were taken to that made me do a double take. Previously another desert scene stumped me in Rango. The 3D enhanced the movie, making it pop in some scenes but never hindered or seemed like it used for the sake of 3D.

Final Thoughts:

The Adventures of Tintin was a blast and I had plenty of fun and enjoyment while watching it. It was funny and action packed. Snowy was great and cute to watch. Made me feel like a kid again.

Episode Eleven - "Birth"

1984

This is it. We finally get to the birth of the twins. But before that it seems that some of the ghosts, along with Nora, want the babies for themselves. We find Chad and Patrick fixing the babies room. With plans revealed to Constance that once they have the babies they will wait until they are one year old or so, kill them, so they can stay cute and babies forever.

Violet goes to Constance for help to get rid of them. Billie Dean the psychic senses that Violet is dead and mentally tells to her that she is sorry and that this should not have happened to her. She doesn’t want Tate around her. Billie Dean reveals an old Native American story on how to get rid of the ghosts. Tate helps Violet and hits on Patrick to get him close enough to steal his wedding ring. Violet gets Chad’s watch. Later on Violet burns the items in the furnace and says the word. Chad fakes his “death” and tells her that the story is a joke and that he is giving up getting the babies due to Patrick’s constant infidelity and cheating. And throws in that Tate raped her mom and is the father of one of the babies.

Against her will and most likely due to the houses supernatural power, Vivien is going to give birth in the house. The power goes out and not able to get help they have no choice but to stay. Constance is around to lend a hand. Ghost’s come to their aid so to speak. The mad doctor and the two murdered nurses help with the birth. Vivien’s baby with Ben is still born and is whisked away by the doctor and given to Nora. The other baby has some complications but is alive and well. Constance takes it to clean up, Moira cries, only to then be confronted by Hayden. Who wants “her” baby.

Vivien then goes into shock and bleeds out. Violet tells her mom to let go and be with her while Ben seems to be slowly losing it. Vivien finally lets go. The house is quiet with only Ben crying. Violet then confronts Tate and tells him to leave her alone. To “go away”. Her mom appears. Holding her. Violet tells her that she is sorry and so sorry for losing her baby. Vivien then tells Violet that she didn’t lose her baby and hugs her tighter.
