3 Clash Of The Titans
4 Prince Of Persia
5 The Last Airbender

The end of the award season, Best Animated movie of 2010

Maybe the most important award of the year, best animated movie of the year. Why this one, you ask? Well, here at The Movie Spot, we love our animated movies. Correct me if i'm wrong but i'm sure that me and my colleague feature at least 2 or 3 animated films in our top 10 this year. So, it's safe to say we're big on animated films.

Let's take a look at the best of the best in animated films of 2010:

Robert Acosta:
Winner: Despicable Me
Runner Ups: Yogi Bear, How to Train Your Dragon, Toy Story 3

Jose Diaz:
Winner: How to Train Your Dragon
Runner Ups: Despicable Me

You have no idea how bad I wanted to give this award to Yogi Bear. One of the more surprising films of the year, it wasn't enough to overtake Despicable Me in my book. Good sharp comedy, funny animations, good use of 3D, Despicable Me was one of the total packages of the year. How to Train Your Dragon was the other total package of the year. Great story, good use of 3D, good witty comedy, and extremely charming. Toughest award to hand out, but definitely the right movies got them.

Jose's List

1 How To Train Your Dragon

So here is my choice for the number one movie of the year. An animated movie that brought heart and action. A coming of age movie that saw Hiccup go from an awkward and shunned viking into a hero. The animation itself was wonderful and properly used 3D technology. I really felt like a kid watching this movie. This movie hands down beat all the countless Disney and Pixar movies that I have seen throughout the years and pretty much removed The Incredibles as the best animated movie I have seen.

The best movie of 2010 is...

By: Robert Acosta

I mean come on, just look at the damn poster!

For me, this pick is a no brainer. From when I saw the trailer, the poster, everything. I knew this was going to be one hell of a movie, one of those movies that rarely come. A masterpiece type of a movie. Certain people are not going to like this pick because it is the obvious choice and that I may just be playing to popular opinion. I say, a lot of time the obvious choice is the right choice.

I couldn't find a real flaw with the film. It all just seamlessly fell into place. The top notch acting from Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon Levitt and company, the great action and the just mind boggling special effects that I still can't get over.

But Inceptions biggest asset is its story and philosophy it carries. The idea of infiltrating dreams, changing ones way of thought and planting ideas in ones mind is just amazing. Then to watch it all play out on screen the way it did, just blew my mind. Christopher Nolan can do no wrong.

Explosion time! Best Action of the year

There are always a few action movies every year that usually stand above all. Maybe because of kick-ass fight scenes, explosions galore, an amazing gun fight or a thrilling car chase. This year's winner and nominees feature all of that so you know you're in good hands.

The best action movie of 2010 is...

Robert Acosta
Winner: The Expendables
Runner Ups: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Inception, Kick-Ass, The Fighter

Jose Diaz
Winner: The Expendables
Runner Ups: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

In a clear cut fashion, The Expendables takes it. I mean, that is exactly what the movie was made for. For the tremendous, testosterone driven action! Not that there wasn't a story or anything like that, but that isn't what drew movie goers in. Throw together some of the better action stars of the last 20-25 years, and have them create an intense, all action flick. Part 2 is on the way, and I can only imagine we'll be talking about the sequel in the same breath as the original.

2 Inception

Inception is a movie that has to be seen. It makes you think what is real? What is fake? What is reality? What is a dream? And it shows you all of that while providing an action packed movie. I applaud you Nolan and company for giving me a badass, thought provoking, mind bending experience.

Runner up to best movie of the year, Number 2 is..

By: Robert Acosta

I didn't expect Mr. Pilgrim to be in my top 10 for the year when I first heard about it, let alone in the top 2. Through some amazing action sequences, hilarious comedy and a pretty good story, it was hard to overlook it.

I'm not a huge fan of Michael Cera. I never liked his comedy because over his short career it has become more and more linear. Linear meaning he does the same style of comedy in all his movies. The geeky, nerdy guy who tries to be cool all the time but ends up being awkward. Superbad, Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist, Juno all second that statement. Finally, he broke out of that style, mostly, and actually ends up being pretty damn funny.

The cool, crazy action scenes is what did it for me though. All the special effects that made the movie pop out is what did it for me. And there are a lot of them too,  I can count at least 5. So there is no shortage of memorable moments from this film.

Robert Acosta' favorite award, Best Comedy goes to..

I thought it would be great to coincide the 3rd best movie of the year with best comedy of the year. Why? Well if you look closely at my #3 movie of the year, it should seem very familiar.

Here is the best comedy of the year:

Robert Acosta:
Winner: The Other Guys
Runner Ups: Due Date, MacGruber, Jackass 3D, Grown Ups.

Jose Diaz:
Winner: Due Date
Runner Ups: The Other Guys

So it was clear that The Other Guys was going to be prevalent in this award, if you didn't see from the hints. I didn't think it was going to be as funny as it was, but damn did it surprise. I can't remember a dull moment in that movie. It was an overall great performance from everyone, including Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes,  who most people may not see as funny people. As for Due Date, I had predicted that it would be the comedy of the year for me, so it doesn't surprise me that it shows up on our list in one way or another. You can't mix Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galifinakis and fail.

Number 3 movie of 2010 is..

By: Robert Acosta

Maybe i'm a bit biased towards comedy movies but notice, this is the only comedy in the top 10. From beginning to end, The Other Guys was hilarious. I honestly can't remember a dull moment in the film. Movies like this aren't taken seriously but this movie offered a good blend of great comedy, a decent story and small action.

Did anyone think Mark Wahlberg was funny? I sure didn't. He surprised the hell out of me, he was genuinely funny. Didn't seemed forced or anything like that, it was just pure fun for him. Will Ferrell is going to give his best for a movie like this, but of course comedy is subjective. Whether you find him funny or stupid is a personal preference. I think he is pretty funny and he definitely gave a great comedic performance in The Other Guys.

The DVD for The Other Guys is out now, please go pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

3 Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows

It was the first part of the final Harry Potter movie franchise. Many fans grew up with these characters and actors. So this movie is a top three movie of the year. I loved this film. The emotion and tension, the love and hate, and the ending of this film left me wanting to sit another three hours in order to see the final part.

Almost There, Number 4 Movie of 2010

By: Robert Acosta

Harry Potter was going to end up on the top 10 one way or another. Just where on the top 10 was really the argument.

The tremendous book turned into the film, broken into two parts. The first part was more talk than action and I love that they followed that pattern to the tee. Lots of tension, lots of set up for the 2nd part, just good ol' fashioned storytelling.

It is the best performances from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson to date. I say to date cause I have a good feeling about part 2, which is where all the action is.

4 Tron Legacy

Just recently released and the number four spot. That is right Tron is this years Avatar. Visually Tron is breathtakingly great. The soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a movie in years, nod to you Daft Punk. The story was complex yet you knew what was going on. Simply great.

And Best Drama Is Awarded To..

A movie with a good, dramatic story is usually up movie of the year. It's hard to beat a movie with a good, dramatic story. The intricate and long storytelling of these kind of movies is what makes them so memorable. Let's take a look at this year's best dramas:

Robert Acosta:
Winner: Black Swan
Runner ups: Inception, The Social Network, Brooklyn's Finest

Jose Diaz:
Winner: Love and Other Drugs
Runner ups: Black Swan

Black Swan definitely was one of the best movies of the year, mainly because of its great story. The drama that Natalie Portman causes within herself is unlike anything i've seen this year and in quite some time. Love and Other Drugs shows a bunch of problems that add to the story. Especially since they are some pretty serious stuff to deal with, it made the movie a lot stronger.

Best Horror Movie Goes to...

Some may argue that horror movies are not what they used to be. Be that as it may, they are still around and they're are still some good ones out there. Horror and being scared are definitely subjective matters, one person may be scared of a movie while one person may not find the same movie in any way scary. Nonetheless, good horror movies still exist. Here are our winners for horror movie of 2010:

Robert Acosta:
Winner: Paranormal Activity 2
Runner ups: Saw 3D, The Crazies

Jose Diaz:
Winner: Devil
Runner ups: Paranormal Activity 2

So as you can see, Paranormal Activity 2 was a big hit for us. I had it on my top 10 movies of 2010 list(at #10) and we both had it on our lists for best horror of this year. Most people find this kind of movie stupid but i'm sure, without a doubt in my mind, if any type of paranormal activity were to happen in your home, you'd be scared out of your mind. That's what makes horror movies effective, theoretically putting yourself in the situation the movie presents and knowing it would be damn scary. As for Devil, it also looks like it presents effective horror, the way PA2 did. A group of people trapped in an elevator and one of them ends up being the Devil. Think about it. That's a terrifying thought.

Half way through the list, were at Number 5.

By: Robert Acosta

Talk about your surprise movie of the year, I mean this came completely out of left field. Never would have crossed my mind to watch it, but hey, a free movie is a free movie right? Best bargain ever.

Great performances from Gyllenhall and Hathaway, providing the exact blend of comedy and romance that is needed. A romantic comedy that is very reminiscent of the better Rom-Coms in history, the When Harry Met Sally type. Rom-Coms in this day and age are just so cheesy and are not nearly as good as in the 80s and 90s. At least we get to see one do very well.

Go watch the film, you'll see exactly why Love and Other Drugs is the #5 movie of 2010.

5 The Social Network

The Social Network shocked me. I didn't believe that I would have like a movie about Facebook as much as I did. Especially told in a broken flashback form, and with the main character being such an asshole. Seriously some great acting from Jesse Eisenburg and Andrew Garfield.

Who is going to have the best 2011?

2011 is looking like a strong year of movies, and we certainly cannot wait to see what it has in store for us. Of course, there are going to be a few people who will have a better year than everyone else. Let's explore some of the people, or companies who should be gearing up for a great 2011.

  • Ryan Reynolds
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt
  • Tom Hardy
  • Natalie Portman
  • Marvel
In that small list of actors and one actress, we have up and comers and we have very recognizable names. Reynolds has Green Lantern coming, and that could very well make or break 2011 for him. Gordon Levitt will have a few projects in 2011, including a movie called Live With It, a comedy. Hardy has a few movies himself lined up, including a great movie called Warrior, which could be next years "The Fighter." Portman is gonna have lots to do and may end up having the most successful 2011. Thor, Your Highness and No Strings Attached.

Lastly, Marvel should be busy next year, hopefully makings hits. With Captain America and Thor upcoming, this is a big year for Marvel; a crucial year. If those movies are at least good, than people will be much more excited and receiving of The Avengers in 2012. Now if they are complete duds, than Marvel may have a problem.

This is the last of the individual awards, were moving on to movie earned awards.

Number 6, you're up.

By: Robert Acosta

You're not going to find a more heart warming story than the story in Despicable Me. Take 3 pretty adorable orphans, put them with a scientist hell bent on making his mark and somehow, somehow, you get a charming film.

What is even more impressive is that this isn't a Disney or Pixar film. Usually only Disney or Pixar films make the top 10(and they may do the same on our list) so this is pretty remarkable.

The story, the characters, the animation, it all draws you in from the start and will grip you to the end.

6 Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Merry Christmas everyone!
So here is Scott Pilgrim winning the sixth spot on my list. Fun and spastic. The video game nods and action straight out of the books. The fights were great and well done. Scott Pilgrim was a labor of love and it showed how much the director, Wright, loved and respected the books.

Best Story of 2010(Merry Christmas all!)

A movie usually goes as its story goes. Good story, usually good movie. Bad story, well you catch my drift. Certain movies can go without a good story and manage to entertain, while others heavily rely on stories to carry the movie. Either way, stories are the meat in the movie sandwich. Without it, all you've got is bread.

Here is the 2010 story of the year:

Robert Acosta

Winner: Inception
Runner ups: Black Swan, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Inception
Runner ups: Despicable Me

Across the board, Inception by far took this. Every decade or so, you get a really special film, with a tremendous story. Inception has already taken this decade. It's going to be hard to top a film that sports dream stealing, multi-dream action and the idea of time traveling in a sense. Good luck writers of America.

Lucky number 7, 7th best movie of 2010

By: Robert Acosta

Want to see an extremely dramatic story that shows a personal struggle unlike anything you've seen on screen before? Black Swan is the film for you.

You're going to hear a lot about Black Swan at the Oscars and rightfully so. The overall performance from everyone involved shows as it easily will be more towards the top of everyone's list for best movie of the year. Not that that is a mark on Black Swan, because I could make a case for it being number 1 on my list too. I just like 6 more movies this than one is all.

Get ready for this movie to receive a lot of hardware at the Oscar's or be prepared for a robbery.

7 Kick Ass

Kick Ass did what the name says. I have to say that this was the better comic book adapted movie this year. I had this higher on my list but some other films beat it down. But Kick Ass can take a beating and survive at my seventh spot. The action was great, the acting was fun and playful, and the soundtrack was awesome.

Male Actor of the Year...is...

Usually when you talk about male actor of the year, you talk about a strong performance, typically in a dramatic role. Very George Clooney-esque. Maybe it'll be like that with our awards, maybe not. I'll take the latter.

Here we are with the male actor of the year:

Robert Acosta:

Winner: Mark Wahlberg
Runner ups: Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhall

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Jesse Eisenberg
Runner ups: Leonardo DiCaprio

Lots of good names thrown into the mix for this award but it ultimately came down to how much impact the winner had on hollywood this year. Wahlberg had two very good, commercially successful films out this year in The Other Guys and The Fighter. It would be foolish for me not to pick him based on public opinion. As for Eisenberg, he really stepped out of his comfort zone in The Social Network, showing a whole new element to his acting ability. Would not be surprised if he leaves with something to show for it at the Oscars. Tomorrow, Story of the year(No, not the band.)

Here we are at the number 8 movie of 2010

By: Robert Acosta

Marvel and DC should take note. Kick-Ass just showed you how to make a very good superhero movie. A nice blend of action, comedy and a good story, Kick-Ass is hard to overlook.

Aaron Johnson, seemingly, came out of nowhere and gave a spectacular performance. Showing a vulnerable, but insanely strong willed character. Chloe Moretz, playing the infamous Hit Girl, kicked ass. Pun intended. The fact that she became so memorable because of this performance goes to show how great Kick-Ass really was.

I suggest you go and pick up the DVD of the 8th best movie of the year now!

8 Love And Other Drugs

I normally would not have seen this movie. To be honest I don't like romantic comedies. But I did see this and had to change my opinion. Hands down Love and Other Drugs was the best romantic comedy this year. It had two great performances in Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal and a wonderful, funny, yet heart warming story.

Best Female Actress of the Year

Female Actress of the year would usually be more of a competitive award, much harder to give out in other years. This year, it really just focuses on a couple of women who put all they had into their role. No, Meryl Streep will not be mentioned at all. In fact, if you've been paying attention at all to The Movie Spot, you probably could have predicted the outcome of this award.

On with it!:

Robert Acosta:

Winner: Natalie Portman
Runner ups: Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Mila Kunis

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Anne Hathaway
Runner ups: Mila Kunis

Very easy to call. We've talked about the roles that Portman played in Black Swan and Hathaway played in Love and Other Drugs so much that this became unanimous. Check back tomorrow for Male actor of the year, which will be more competitive and lead to more discussion then this award did.

Moving forward to the 9th best movie of 2010

By: Robert Acosta

One of my most anticipated movies of the year, The Social Network certainly delivered the goods. A good amount of drama led to one of the more entertaining movies of the year.

Of course, a lot of the real story surrounding Facebook may have been kept out to be replaced by sexier, more intriguing scenes. Nonetheless, i'm just looking at the film itself, not its integrity and how close it sticks to the origin.

Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield all give performances of a lifetime that just may sky rocket them into stardom. Now Garfield has the Spider-Man film and Timberlake is a widely distinct name in music. So really, Eisenberg really benefits the most from this and it looks like he's headed for a good 2011.

With one of the better stories of the year, The Social Network is a solid film, aiming towards a lot of the teens and adults that use Facebook religiously. The Social Network not only makes my top 10, but probably many, many others.

2010 Top Ten Movies # 9

2010 Top Ten Movies # 9

9 Despicable Me

As soon as the credits were over I knew I had seen one the best non-Disney/non-Pixar CG movies this year. Everything worked for this movie. Gru, the minions, the three girls, the old scientists, Vector, etc. I left the theater with a smile.

Performance of the year

Big award on hand here, as this award focuses solely on a single performance. One performance that stays stuck in someones mind of weeks and months after they have viewed it.

And the 2010 performance of the year goes to...

Robert Acosta:

Winner: Mark Wahlberg in "The Fighter"
Runner ups: Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Radcliffe

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Andrew Garfield in "The Social Network"
Runner ups: Elsie Fisher

Wondering who Elsie Fisher is? She is the voice of Agnes, the little girl from Despicable Me who everyone, including ourselves, fell in love with. Well deserved, even as a runner up. As for the winners, Mark Wahlberg put in a lot of emotion into The Fighter, owning the Micky Ward role. Garfield also put it in a lot of emotion that made is role extremely believable.

2010 Top Ten Movies # 10

2010 Top Ten Movies # 10

Jose's List

10 Toy Story 3/Due Date

I wanted to like Toy Story 3 more but I felt it lacked something that the previous films had. Now Due Date was a pretty damn funny movie and what made it a top ten movie for me was the interactions between Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis and the cute dog. But why two for ten? I couldn't decide which movie was better than the other, nor could I find another movie to replace them both, so I put both.

The 10th best movie of 2010 is..

By: Robert Acosta

The first Paranormal Activity film did pretty well for itself. It made a good amount of money, made a tremendous amount of profit and managed to do what most horror films are unable to do, which is scare you. Paranormal Activity 2 takes it to a whole new level.

The funny thing is, Paranormal Activity doesn't do anything new but that is what makes it work. It doesn't try to change the game and become something it's not. In fact, it follows that slow burn, building kind of horror that the first film exactly followed. What it does do is present the scares more effectively.

(SPOILER) It also connects the two films pretty well, it adds a new depth to the film when you realize that this isn't a normal sequel.

Paranormal Activity 2 is one of the stronger, and more fun times at the theater that I've had this year. I wish they would quit while they're ahead but hey, maybe the 3rd part will be on the best of 2011 list.

The Honorable Mentions by Robert Acosta

Before we get into the 10 best films of 2010, I'd like to give you guys the 11-20 on my list. Keep in mind, I do have 50 films on my list and i'll only be going through the top 10. And of course a small shout out to the 11-20 movies.

20. The Expendables
19. Tron: Legacy
18. Due Date
17. Saw 3D
16. Jackass 3D
15. Toy Story 3
14. Iron Man 2
13. MacGruber
12. How to Train Your Dragon 3D
11. The Fighter

There you have it. Lots of solid films in there, that in other years may have cracked the top 10. Not this year. Now, for the nitty gritty. The top 10 films of 2010, coming up now!

Surprise Actor/Actress of the year

Breakout of the year and Surprise actor/actress of the year are very similar awards. What separates them is Breakout of the year may not be a surprise performance from someone, very much like Natalie Portmans role in Black Swan. This award goes to the actor or actress who seemingly comes out of nowhere and puts in a really good performance.

Here are the Surprise actor or actress winners, along with runner ups:

Robert Acosta:

Winner: Michael Cera in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
Runner ups: Aaron Johnson, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Ellen Page

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Aaron Johnson in "Kick-Ass"
Runner ups: Jay Baruchel

This had to be one of the harder awards to think about and give a clear cut winner. You can easily make a case for any of the people listed above that they had the surprise performance(s) of the year. Though in the end, the commercial success of the movie really played a role in the winners winning. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Kick-Ass both were positively reviewed, naming both Cera and Johnson as strong points of the films.

DVD Releases December 21st

By: Robert Acosta

I hate when this happens. A whole slew of good DVDs come out just days before Christmas. Why does this always happen? I guess it's a smart ploy to get lots of money...and unfortunately it works. Well, let's take a look at the DVD releases this week:

NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
  • Salt
  • Step Up 3
  • Devil
  • Easy A
  • Family Guy: It's a Trap
  • Family Guy Trilogy
  • Futurama(Volume 5)
  • UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama
So this week you've got a nice array of things to choose from. Good dramas, entertaining dance moves, terrifying horror films and hilarious comedies.

While the only thing that stood out for Step Up 3 was the dancing, i'm sure they're will be tons of extras around the dancing, and that's a plus.

The Family Guy Trilogy is a small box set of the now 3 Star Wars parodies that were done and it's actually at an affordable price. You can walk into target and pick up the DVD trilogy for less than $20, and the Blu-Ray for like $22. Of course, if you have the other 2 long episodes on DVD, than you could just pick up the It's a Trap DVD.

Lastly, both Devil and Easy A were strong films, so at the very least, the DVDs should be rentable. Devil= terrifying. Easy A= good, genuine entertainment. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Next week brings some DVDs you may want, along with a show that I despise! Sounds like a good week.

The Spot News: Cast News For Locke And Key

Kinsey Locke Cast For Locke And Key

As Mark Romanek and crew draw closer to production on the pilot episode of Locke and Key, adapted from the Joe Hill comics by Josh Friedman, more casting is snapping into place. The latest addition is young Irish actress Sarah Bolger, previously of the not-entirely-dissimilar Spiderwick Chronicles.
Bolger’s part will be that of Kinsey Locke, and here’s how Deadline describe the role:
The athletic middle child… unhappily uprooted to [sic] her dad’s family home by her mom after he is brutally murdered.

Good choice.

Breakout actor/actress of the year goes to...

Breakout actor or actress of the year award is up and this is usually one of the more fun discussions to have. Primarily because you're usually talking about someone who most people never really cared for, or maybe never even heard about.

Without any further delay, the winner and runner ups for the Breakout actor/actress of the year:

Robert Acosta:

Winner: Tom Hardy
Runner ups: Aaron Johnson, Justin Timberlake, Rooney Mara, Emma Roberts.

Jose Diaz:

Winner: Natalie Portman
Runner ups: Jesse Eisenberg

Lots of fresh new names in this category, which is fantastic. Natalie Portman isn't a fresh face in acting but her performance in Black Swan makes it hard not to pick her. For logics sake, let's hope she takes some hardware away from the Oscars.

As for Mr. Tom Hardy, a lot of people saw him as the lesser piece in Inception this year. While that may be true, he had a great performance and he was definitely noticed. He already has a tremendous opportunity with being cast as the villain in the next Batman film. Well deserved.

Weekend Box Office Numbers December 17th-19th

By: Robert Acosta

The final weeks of the year are upon us and with that came a few good movies this past weekend. With TRON, Yogi Bear, The Fighter and....and...How Do You Know....all out, it was bound to be a good weekend. Well, a good weekend for TRON...and not anyone else.

Let's take a look at this past weekends box office numbers:

  1. TRON: Legacy   $43.6 Million
  2. Yogi Bear   $16.7 Million
  3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treaders Voyage   $12.4 Million
  4. The Fighter   $12.2 Million
  5. The Tourist   $8.7 Million
  6. Tangled   $8.7 Million
  7. Black Swan   $8.3 Million
  8. How Do You Know   $7.6 Million
  9. Harry Potter 7: Part 1   $4.8 Million
  10. Unstoppable   $1.8 Million
Tron was going to make a lot of money this weekend. That is a fact. Though, I expected something much more spectacular than 43 Million. I mean both Tangled and Megamind made more in their opening weekends than Tron. Not that that's embarassing but for a movie with such hype as Tron had, I expected more.

Also thought the same for Yogi Bear, it being a family movie and all. Disappointments all around!

Next weekend is Christmas so movies will be coming out on Wednesday, with the exception of Gullivers Travels. True Grit and Little Fockers being the headliners really.

Starting the award season off: Best Special Effects in a movie

Kicking off the "award" season here at The Movie Spot is the Best Special Effects in a movie award. Special effects add an extra pizazz to a film. It could come in the form of exploding buildings, things flying across screen, lots of CGI, it doesn't really matter. All that matters is that it looks cool!

Here is the winner, along with some runner ups:

Robert Acosta:

Winner: TRON: Legacy
Runner ups: Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Harry Potter 7 part 1

Jose Diaz:

Winner: TRON: Legacy
Runner ups: Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

It's pretty clear who took this award, in the last possible day of eligibility I might add...which was yesterday. Nonetheless, TRON: Legacy didn't win by a whole lot because Inception was pretty crazy with the effects as well. But when you see TRON, you'll see why it was a clear cut winner of this award.

TRON: Legacy review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn
Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn/Clu
Olivia Wilde as Quorra

Plot: 20 years after his father's disappearance, Sam Flynn jumps into the world which his father has been stuck in. He must find his way out or he and his father will be stuck in there forever.

Review: One of the more anticipated movies of the year, TRON: Legacy leaves a better impression than its predecessor did but still doesn't reach its full potential.

I always like to start off with the positives and so I will carry on tradition. TRON: Legacy is not only one of most visually beautiful movies of the year but in quite some time(and yes, it beats out Avatar in my book.) The 3D is done with great effort and it works for the whole movie, or up to the point where "The Grid" is introduced.

So because it looks so damn good, naturally the action scenes are gonna be just as good and intense. All the fights taking places on motorcycles, with disks flying all over the place. The action goes hand in hand with the visuals and ends up being the two best aspects of the film.

The acting part of it all is pretty good, not as strong as the visuals and action, but it's still there. Garrett Hedlund, who doesn't have a lot on his resume in terms of movies, does a pretty good job of playing a believable hero. Olivia Wilde also does a good job serving as the apprentice, so to say, of Kevin Flynn. She effectively pulls off a strong yet impulsive character that, in more cases than not, ends up saving Sam Flynn's ass. Jeff Bridges on the other hand, gives a solid performance but seems to change it up from what he was in the original TRON, nearly channeling his inner Big Lebowski. Now the part of Clu is of course not real and CGI'd in but it's not bad. You can tell that it is CGI but there are times, from far, where it looks pretty real.

Another strong point in TRON: Legacy is its soundtrack. It's rare that I mention a soundtrack being strong for a movie but when Daft Punk is doing 90% of it, guaranteed it's going to be good. It gives you a throwback feeling while having a touch of modernized sound in it, and you'll find yourself caught up in the music.

Unfortunately what holds TRON: Legacy back is the story and characters. Though I didn't have a huge problem with the characters, the movie is called TRON. A little more from the character Tron would have been nice. As for the story, I wasn't tremendously entertained with it. It seemed way too bland, plain and at times, at least for me, a bit confusing. I still have some confusion right now, but that's just me.

Overall, TRON: Legacy is still a really good movie. You're going to love the visuals and the action and the music, but everything else won't impress you nearly as much.

DVD Releases December 14th

By: Robert Acosta

I'm excited for this week's DVD releases for the sole reason that two of my favorite movies of the year are coming out on DVD today!

Why not jump right into DVD releases for the week:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • The A-Team
  • The Other Guys
  • Despicable Me
  • Cyrus
  • Nanny McPhee Returns
  • True Grit(1969 Version; Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • WWE Summerslam 2010
  • 24(Season 8)
  • 24(Series)
  • WWE: Top 50 Superstars of all-time
  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
This week showcases some good movies to pick up this week, and I hate when that happens just a couple of weeks before Christmas.

You cannot go wrong with both Despicable Me and The Other Guys. If you can get any Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs, even better. Unrated editions, another bonus.

I've heard very good things about the movie Cyrus. Starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei, this movie just has the right ingredients to be a good renter.

Finally, for all you wrestling fans(Like myself!), WWE is releasing the top 50 Superstars of all time DVD and i'm sure it should be pretty entertaining.

To make matters worse, next weeks DVDs are coming in bunches. Grab some stuff this week, save ALOT of money for next week.

The Spot News: No more Fav Iron Man?

Jon Favreau Passes On "Iron Man 3"

source : Comicbook Resources

Reports are coming in from around the web that director Jon Favreau has decided not to direct "Iron Man 3" for Marvel Studios after leading the first two films in the franchise to great success.

Vulture has the officially unconfirmed first report where they speculate that either a lack of creative control, a tougher negotiating stance for salary or a mixture of both are contributing factors to Favreau's supposed decision. The site points towards a recent interview with MTV News where the upcoming "Cowboys & Aliens" director said of the future of the franchise:

"In theory, 'Iron Man 3' is going to be a sequel or continuation of 'Thor,' 'Hulk,' 'Captain America' and 'Avengers. This whole world...I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those guys."

Meanwhile, Collider reminds readers that star Robert Downey, Jr. has contractual approval of any director for future installments of the movies.

CBR News has reached out to representatives from Marvel Studios on this story but hasn't yet received confirmation or denial of this rumor.

Whether Favreau will eventually publicly declare his intentions for "Iron Man 3" or not, the director's next film will be "Magic Kingdom" – a family fantasy for Disney set in the company's Disneyland theme park.

UPDATE: Deadline is now reporting that the news is true via confirmation from "insiders close to Marvel and Downey."

Is this an official poster for Deathly Hallows Part 2?

Honestly not sure. Looks great none the less.

Weekend Box Office Numbers December 10th-12th

By: Robert Acosta

Had a feeling that Narnia would be taking the top spot, glad I came through on that prediction.

Now in the middle of December, there isn't many good movies to be talking about. All that is going to change next week and I cannot wait for that.

Until then, let's review what happened this past weekend with the box office numbers:

  1. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader   $24.5 Million
  2. The Tourist   $17 Million
  3. Tangled   $14.6 Million
  4. Harry Potter 7: Part 1   $8.5 Million
  5. Unstoppable   $3.8 Million
  6. Black Swan   $3.3 Million
  7. Burlesque   $3.2 Million
  8. Love & Other Drugs   $3 Million
  9. Due Date   $2.5 Million
  10. Megamind   $2.5 Million
Though The Tourist has been received as a crappy movie, it made decent money but I hear the budget was at $100 million. So, it may be safe to say, The Tourist won't be making too much profit.

The top 10 is destined to change next week with 3 big releases next week. Tron: Legacy, Yogi Bear and The Fighter look to be going 1-3 in that order. All 3 look to be great movies to check out, with Yogi Bear and The Fighter I know they are great movies. Tron just looks tremendously good.

If they're were ever a weekend to go to the movies, it would be this upcoming one.

Yogi Bear Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Dan Aykroyd as Yogi Bear(voice)
Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo(voice)
Tom Canavagh as Ranger Smith
Anna Faris as Rachel

Plot: Yogi Bear and Boo Boo are just two, smarter than your average, bears living in Jellystone Park. While Jellystone park isn't the attraction it used to be, Yogi, Boo Boo and Ranger Smith look to bring back to where it once was and, ultimately, save the park.

Review: There are a couple of things that the Yogi Bear movie taught me. 1. Light Mayonnaise tastes completely different from regular mayonnaise and 2. check your expectations at the door and just have fun with the movie.

I'll tell you what i'm talking about. I went into the Yogi Bear movie with the expectation of it not being so good, falling flat on its face. What happened in the end was, Yogi Bear put me flat on my face.

The movie was one of the better animated movies i've seen all year. It transcended what most cartoon movies usually are. Cartoon movie meaning old cartoons turned into full length movies, just to be clear. Movies like Scooby Doo(both of them), The Flintstones and seemingly, The Smurfs have all been duds. I'm glad to say Yogi Bear does not fall into that category.

One of the things that makes Yogi Bear successful is that it was kept genuine. It stood true to the characters and to the cartoon. Right from the opening credits you feel like it's the cartoon, just a bit updated. Yogi is as witty as ever and Boo Boo makes for a good sidekick, though he's a bit limited in what he does and says. A good animated movie plays to all age groups, young and old. Yogi Bear does an extremely good job of that cause I personally enjoyed the hell out of it.

People worried about Aykroyd and Timberlake voicing Yogi and Boo Boo respectively, but I can happily say that the movie is in great hands(or should I say voices) with them. My only complaint about casting, and this may be big depending on how you look at it, is Tom Canavagh as Ranger Smith. I don't think he was the right choice for the Ranger Smith role. He did a respectable job, but from the get go, he didn't have the feel of Ranger Smith. Canavagh just seems like too much of a happy go lucky kind of guy and I would have wanted someone who conveys anger a little better.

As far as animated movies go, Yogi Bear is one of the better ones this year. It may seem a bit on the short side, especially for the pricing of a 3D movie, but it definitely delivers.

The Fighter Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward
Christian Bale as Dick Eklund
Amy Adams as Charlene Fleming
Melissa Leo as Alice Ward

Plot: Boxer Micky Ward struggles with his career, unable to gain the title shot and money he covets. The only way to get everything he wants, he must break free from the one thing that really means the most to him, his family.

Review: Automatically when you hear about a boxing movie you're going to hear things like "Well it isn't Rocky or Raging Bull so it's not going to be good." Hold that thought. The Fighter is a surprisingly great movie, maybe not in the same breath as Rocky and Raging Bull but should at least be mentioned in the tier below.

The Fighter follows "Irish" Micky Ward as he tries to take his boxing career to the next level. He wants to be a champion, wants to make the big money but continuously gets held back. He realizes that he's not the main source of the problem but his family, mother and brother mostly, who stall his career. When his half brother, boxer Dick Ecklund, gets into major trouble and his new girlfriend adds a new depth to his life, Ward cuts himself off from the family and finds himself progressing.

Mark Wahlberg plays Micky Ward and honestly does a very good job of it. The look bothered me a bit, but it was mostly spot on, especially in the ring. Wahlberg doesn't have too many tremendous performances but this one has to be placed right there at the top. He provides the raw emotion that a role like this absolutely needed. He also manages to have amazing chemistry with Bale as Ecklund and Adams as Charlene, and that made everything just 10 times better.

Though The Fighter is mostly about Ward, you do get a lot of personal time with Dick Ecklund, played by Christian Bale. At first, Bale's performance came off to me like overdone, not as strong as Wahlbergs and things of that nature. If you watch the end credits, you see the real Micky Ward and Dick Ecklund commenting on the movie and then you realize, Bale played Dick Ecklund perfectly. There is a lot of Oscar award talk around this movie and Christian Bale may very well be up for a supporting role award.

Then you got the females, who are just as vital to the story as anyone. The sexy Amy Adams plays Wahlberg's girlfriend, Charlene. She ends up being the turning point for Ward in the movie, where he starts to see things clearly. Adams shows a fire to her in this film that I never thought i'd see and it was fantastic. Definitely her best performance as well.

As for the story and the boxing itself, it's mostly spot on. For the movies sake, they had to cut their movie at a certain point and make things a little more interesting. A couple things did bother me about the story and boxing they featured. I know, because of limitations certain things couldn't make it in the movie. Micky Ward's legacy isn't so much about him winning a championship because he'll always be remembered for his fights against Arturo Gatti. Unfortunately, Gatti died about a year ago so he was merely mentioned. Now a solution to this could have been to show some video of the fights at the end, so that people can see the real legacy. Also, the boxing was too good. What I mean is, they tried to make it so much like Rocky that it didn't look genuine. While, the people in my theater were caught up in the fighting and very much cheering and clapping for it, it was very much like Rocky. Just show boxing for what it is, rather than build it up to be something it's not.

Overall, The Fighter is one of the stronger movies of the year. All around great efforts from everyone, including the mother of Micky Ward in the film who I barely mentioned(May also get some awards for her performance). Go see The Fighter, it's more than worth it.
