The Spot News: Avengers Film Getting Another Possible Villain

The Spot News: Avengers Film Getting Another Possible Villain

This past Friday a few bits of news started making the rounds on the villain or villains of the upcoming Avengers movie from Marvel. First we heard that Hulk would be the bad guy then we have Loki. Then that evolved into Loki and Skrulls and the Kree. Then just the Skrulls an Kree. Now it has went back to just Loki and the Cosmic Cube along with the Skrulls. Then on Friday rumors started that the Infinity Gauntlet, that was briefly shown in Odin's weapons vault in the Thor movie, would be making an appearance and would have a familiar wearer in The Avengers: its creator Thanos, the Death-obsessed Eternal bent on genocide and galactic conquest.
So right now the villain rumors have Loki with the Cosmic Cube, Skrulls, and now Thanos with his Infinity Gauntlet.

Officially, it is just Loki facing off against the Avengers.

I could possibly see having Thanos pop up at the end credits scene getting back the Infinity Gauntlet setting up a second Avengers movie. But throwing him in with that much power along with Loki and the power of the Cosmic Cube and Skrulls on top of all that seems way too much. Especially when we have Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, etc fighting for screen time.
I say keep it simple. Loki with the Cosmic Cube with the Skrulls. Causing havoc. Since the Skrulls are involved, thrown in Captain Marvel to help out the Avengers. End credits show Thanos getting back the Infinity Gauntlet.

The Spot News: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Trailer

The Spot News: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Trailer

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark has Guillermo del Toro producing, comic book artist Troy Nixey directing, his first feature gig. Top-shelf stars Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce in the lead roles. An R-rating from the MPAA. And rounding it all out, the movie is actually an adaptation of ABC’s 1973 made-for-TV horror flick.

With del Toro serving as a guiding light on the project, as well as an aimed-for PG-13 rating that was ultimately given up on in the interests of delivering a great horror movie, this seems like one to get excited about. You’ll almost certainly feel that way after you watch the creepy, new trailer, which offers your first, quick glimpses at the movie’s creatures. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark opens on Aug. 26.

The Hangover Part II Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Bradley Cooper as Phil
Ed Helms as Stu
Zack Galifinakis as Alan
Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow

Plot: The Wolfpack is back, only in Thailand this time, to cause some unexpected havoc on the city.

Review: Every year we talk about a couple of movies, or more, that we think should have never been made. Mostly due to it being an unwanted sequel. The hype built around the Hangover Part II was just that, the unwanted sequel talk but that didn't stop it from still being itself.

Hangover Part II doesn't really bring anything new to the table. Someone is getting married, the gang celebrates, celebrates too hard and wakes up missing someone, not remembering anything that happened the prior night. It's the same formula. But for me, it works.

Bradley Cooper returns as the calm headed, brains of the group. He brings the occasional laugh but really, he just guides the story along. Ed Helms is the not as level headed member, who things just seem to happen to and panics very quickly. He ends up being pretty hilarious throughout the movie, mostly because he gets put in the more awkward, raunchy positions. And of course, Zack Galifinakis is the comedic uplift if you will. He brings the subtle, sometimes awkward and out of place comedy.

Critics may bash Hangover Part II for being the exact film, but why try to change what works? Most people loved the first film, just change the scenery, add some new jokes and you've for yourself a sequel. Don't go and try to reinvent the wheel and fail with this movie.

Despite what you will hear, The Hangover Part II is funny. I'll agree with most when they say that the original is funnier, because it is. The 2nd part however isn't that far off. It doesn't feature as many laugh out loud as the original, but there is enough there for enjoyment. Good jokes, good scenes, lots more of Mr. Chow than the first film.

Overall, The Hangover Part II doesn't change the game, but just adds to it. Should there be another one? Probably not. As for this one, it's a solid R rated comedy worth checking out.

The Spot News: Kick Ass 2 May Not Happen

Brendon Connelly of Bleedingcoolnews spoke to Matthew Vaughn:

Speaking to Vaughn on Sunday, the subject of Kick-Ass, and its potential sequel, was pretty much guaranteed to come up. I’ve seen a lot of crowing about how a follow-up film is already in the works, possibly even greenlit, and some of it from Mark Millar himself, but I knew better than to believe it. According to Vaughn, we might even do as well to forget about the prospect entirely, and with good reason:
Everyone says we’re doing Kick-Ass 2 but… the weird thing about Kick-Ass 2 is I’d love to do it, because I enjoyed it so much, but I’m a big believer that if you’re going to do a sequel it’s got to be as good as the first one if not better. I just don’t know how I could…
My business brain just says do Kick-Ass 2, shoot it and get it out there and it would make a lot of money but I really do love that movie. It was a special moment to me making that film and I don’t want to spoil it. I’m not saying it’s as good as Pulp Fiction but I think it would be weird if Tarantino did Pulp Fiction 2. Everything that made Kick-Ass original and fun, if you do it again, it would be crass…

The Spot News: Trailer For New Muppets Movie Is A Bit Tricky

The Spot News: Trailer For New Muppets Movie Is A Bit Tricky

Here is a "fake" poster and a real, "leggy" poster along with a rather misgiving trailer. Basically if you didn't know what you were looking at you would have guessed it was another romantic comedy.

The Spot News: Breaking Dawn: Twilight Poster

The Spot News: Breaking Dawn: Twilight Poster

I know these movies are not that loved, I did enjoy them to some degree, but this poster really does nothing for me. It's just a shot of dawn and clouds and a couple tree tips. It is just horribly bland. And what is this part 0ne nonsense?

The trailer will debut on June 5th during the MTV Movie Awards and will be online shortly thereafter.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow
Penelope Cruz as Angelica Malon
Ian McShane as Blackbeard
Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa

Plot: It's a mad race to the fountain of youth as Jack Sparrow, Blackbeard and Barbossa are all headed for it, but only one can obtain its power.

Review: Hard to believe it's been 4 years since the last Pirates movie came out but it has, and time hasn't really done this series too well. Maybe it's just me, and I don't think it is, but maybe the series should have ended 4 years ago with At Worlds End.

Not to call this is an outright terrible movie, but stack it up against the other 3 and it's disappointing. Nothing really seems to be there. The action, the comedy, the story, everything seems to have downgraded completely. It almost seems like a half assed movie just put out to make lots of money, which in its first week it did.

The obvious star of the film is Depp as Jack Sparrow, the witty, iconic pirate. Depp puts in the type of performance he always does with this character, an entertaining one. The problem is, he's really not sharing the stage with anyone. With Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley both gone, Depp is hung out to dry, even with a good performance. Penelope Cruz is stunning, and not a terrible actress but I preferred Knightley. Knightley really sold all her parts very well, added a lot of emotion to her role.

Seemingly in Orlando Bloom's place is baby faced Phillip played by Sam Claflin, the mostly unknown actor out of the UK. It's clear that they did this on purpose, because Claflin looks strikingly similar to Bloom. To be honest, Claflins role and story were both unnecessary to this movie. I can't honestly see a reason why he was in the movie.

The story is a bit riddled with too many storylines. You've got Sparrow and Blackbeard's story, you've got Barbossa's story, you've got Phillip's story and you've got the Spanish army story. It just seemed like too much, like Spider-Man 3 all over again.

I've pointed out a lot of mistakes I know. There is some small entertainment value though, even if it is few and far between. Fanatics of the series will still enjoy it for what it is, but the latter will be mostly bored with it. Other than Jack Sparrow, the movie falls flat on its face.

The Spot News: Shark Night 3D Poster and Trailer

The Spot News: Shark Night 3D Poster and Trailer

I don't agree with the supposed PG-13 rating. They should just follow what Piranha 3D did and release it rated R.

The movie, due in September, comes from director David R. Ellis (SNAKES ON A PLANE, FINAL DESTINATION 2) and features Sara Paxton (THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT), Joel David Moore (AVATAR, HATCHET), Dustin Milligan (EXTRACT), Katharine McPhee (THE HOUSE BUNNY), Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz, Sinqua Walls and Chris Zylka.

The synopsis: Arriving by boat at her family’s Louisiana lake island cabin, Sara (Sara Paxton) and her friends quickly strip down to their swimsuits for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when star football player Malik (Sinqua Walls) stumbles from the salt-water lake with his arm torn off, the party mood quickly evaporates. Assuming the injury was caused by a freak wake-boarding accident, the group realizes they have to get Malik to a hospital on the other side of the lake, and fast.

But as they set out in a tiny speedboat, the college friends discover the lake has been stocked with hundreds of massive, flesh-eating sharks! As they face one grisly death after another, Sara and the others struggle desperately to fend off the sharks, get help and stay alive long enough to reach the safety of dry land.

Weekend Box Office May 20th-22nd

By: Robert Acosta

With Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides making its way to theaters this past Friday, it was a lock for it to be the number 1 money grabber over the weekend. But damn, it pretty much grabbed everything! Here's this past weekends box office numbers:
  1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides   $90.1 Million
  2. Bridesmaids   $21.1 Million
  3. Thor   $15.5 Million
  4. Fast Five   $10.6 Million
  5. Rio   $4.7 Million
  6. Priest   $4.6 Million
  7. Jumping the Broom   $3.7 Million
  8. Something Borrowed   $3.4 Million
  9. Water for Elephants   $2.2 Million
  10. Madea's Big Happy Family   $1 Million

So, it was a landslide for Pirates. No surprise there.

Bridesmaids is doing really well for itself, even with its B list(or less really) cast. Something we missed out on that we may have to catch, could be a darkhorse comedy favorite if you know what I mean.

Thor is doing its thing at #3 and overall is approaching the $150 Million mark and should have that by this weekend.

It's crazy to think that any movie could top Pirates 4 at this point but we've got 2 heavy hitters coming next week. Kung Fu Panda 2 and Hangover II are both coming out and they are coming for blood!...Or the top spot.

Stay tuned to the Movie Spot this week as we have reviews for Pirates 4, The Next Three Days and Waiting for Forever coming this week!

The Spot News: Possible Time and Villains for Thor Sequel

The Spot News: Possible Time and Villains for Thor Sequel

According to a source via Cinema Blend, the sequel will join IRON MAN 3 sometime in 2013, post-2012 AVENGERS. No firm date is set yet, but presumably it’ll be during the typical early blockbuster months. Additionally, there’s info about who the possible villains would be in the follow-up.
The source says that Enchantress and Executioner are being considered. She’s an Asgardian who uses her beauty to seduce and control, and he’s a brutish warrior loyal to her because of her charms.

Not bad villain choices there. Thor does have a decent amount of bad guys to throw at him like Ulik, the Wrecking Crew, Surtur, Hela, etc. Man I would love to see Surtur and Hela.

Paramount Pictures is moving up the release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third and final installment of Michael Bay’s action franchise, from July 1 to June 29.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the shift from a Friday to a Wednesday release apparently had been planned all along.

Why didn't they announce this from the beginning? could have saved money on all the promotional items with the 7/1/11 dates on them.

Fangoria found the poster in The New York Times over the weekend and gave it a scan for everyone else to see. Obviously ignore the whole August 12th thing. Considering the release date has moved around. Supposedly now it is set to release on August 26th.

Synopsis:

While exploring the sprawling estate, the young girl discovers a hidden basement, undisturbed since the strange disappearance of the mansion's builder a century ago. When Sally unwittingly lets loose a race of ancient, dark-dwelling creatures who conspire to drag her down into the mysterious house’s bottomless depths, she must convince Alex and Kim that it’s not a fantasy—before the evil lurking in the dark consumes them all."

The Spot News: First Look At Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

The Spot News: First Look At Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

It is a small rather simple first look picture. In a New York Times feature, in a rather lengthy article, details how such a bizarre project came to pass, and what vision the writers and Timur Bekmambetov have for the film.

“What Lincoln did,” Mr. Bekmambetov said, “was like what Jesus did 2,000 years ago: he freed people.”

The “Vampire Hunter” film, like the book, follows Lincoln from his boyhood on the frontier through his assassination by John Wilkes Booth and — because this is a vampire story — beyond. Young Lincoln, having learned that his grandfather and mother were killed by vampires, vows to kill every last blood-sucker in a country that is crawling with them.

On realizing that vampires are tangled in the slave trade, Lincoln’s resolve grows and takes on a moral dimension. To complicate matters he also learns that the creatures come in two varieties, good and bad.

The Spot News: Seth McFarlane To Bring Back The Flintstones

The Spot News: Seth McFarlane To Bring Back The Flintstones

The battle for the rights to do this with MacFarlane at the helm have been going on for some time now.

The negotiations between 20th Century Fox TV, where McFarlane is based, and Warner Bros Television have been quite complicated. The WB obtained the rights to THE FLINTSTONES after they absorbed famed producer Hanna-Barbera. Warner Bros. has been a bit skeptical about MacFarlane taking over both the television and film properties. This all due to the fact that they don't want the original prehistoric family to come back raunchy.

But MacFarlane prevailed and is getting his chance to give the series a reboot. Deadline indicates that a series would be first, then possibly a film if all goes as planned. It's obvious the structure for FAMILY GUY is one that can be traced all the way back to THE FLINTSTONES or THE HONEYMOONERS.

This is interesting news to say the least. I just hope MacFarlane doesn't mess with The Flintstones too much.

Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honor. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love.

The Spot News: Dead Shadows Teaser Trailer

The Spot News: Dead Shadows Teaser Trailer

Dead Shadows sounds like it will be a fun and great horror movie yet it will be a French film with a small possibility of release over here in the States. I just hope we get a chance to see this film.

Synopsis:

DEAD SHADOWS tells the terrifying story about a young man, Chris, whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that Haley's comet could be seen from earth. Tonight, a new comet is going to appear and everyone in his building are getting ready for a party to celebrate the event. There's even an apocalypse theory going around. As the night falls, Chris starts to discover that people are acting strange - and it seems to somehow be connected to the comet. People are becoming disoriented and violent and it doesn't take long before they start mutating into something from beyond this world. In a fight for survival, Chris has to try to escape from his building with the help from some other tenants - but will they make it out alive?

A quote from a press release: “With DEAD SHADOWS , producer and director David Cholewa wants to redefine the creature horror genre with lots of action. By taking what the French are well-known for in the horror genre and going back to the old 80’s vibes and elevating it to the next level, we want to create a film that is fun, suspenseful, full of action and very scary.”

The Spot News: Some shots of Dr. Connors and Uncle Ben

The Spot News: Some shots of Dr. Connors and Uncle Ben

A first look at Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The green stocking on his hand, most likely for CG work to make it appear limbless. And what is in his other hand?
Yeah I find that a waste of money. Couldn't they have used costuming trick to hide it in the coat sleeve? Unless they are going for a fake prosthetic look.

Also a shot of Martin Sheen playing Uncle Ben and a shot of Peter (Garfield) sitting on a ledge looking adorable. Does he really need to look this adorable? I mean Peter Parker is supposed to be a nerdy, geeky, super smart guy. Andrew Garfield needs to tone done the looks. (Yes I am joking around)

Thor Review

Cast:
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Anthony Hopkins as Odin

Plot: Thor, a majestic and mighty warrior has been cast out of his own realm of Asgard, abandoned on Earth. He must find a way to get back home to stop his power driven brother, Loki.

Review: I can't measure my excitement for Thor. The last few weeks, it's what i've pretty much been waiting for. Thor signifies a lot of things. Possibly the official start to an early summer movie season, though Fast Five's performance at the box office last week may test my logic, and the Marvel movie season has started. Of course, it'll also end right after June 3rd when the last of 3 Marvel films hits.

I had a feeling Thor would be good, not this good though. Is it the best Marvel film to date? No. And that's mostly because the Marvel world, even in film, is so vast. You have Spider-Man 1 and 2, X-Men 1 and 2, and Iron Man. Those are just the Marvel films I considered to be really good and great. Thor is in that category.

The acting is very good. A good mix of very talented actors in Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba with young, relatively unknown actors in Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. The casting was on point. Hemsworth as Thor is very convincing, a part that he clearly makes his own. He shows he can pull off action scenes, and even harder, pull of some comedy throughout the film. Hiddleston as Loki is just as sharp. The idea behind comic book characters coming to life is that they have to be convincing, you have to feel like Hemsworth IS Thor and Hiddleston IS Loki. They did just that.

The story is pretty straight forward, even for the non comic book reader. It helps to know the backstory to the characters, but the filmmakers did a good job of telling a story everyone can understand. It's as straight forward as I stated it in the plot above. Which is good, comic book adaptations can get really messy with a "complicated" storyline. EX: Spider-Man 3 and X-Men: The Last Stand.

The action is very good, it's sprinkled throughout the movie. Some in the beginning, a good chunk in the middle, and some in the end. My only gripe is the ending battle between the two main characters. It felt too short, even a bit unsatisfying. Now I know, The Avengers is coming soon and an even bigger, better battle is ahead but for this movie, I wanted more.

All in all, Thor is great way to kick off the summer movie season. Great action, good comedy, cameos that I will not spoil but will enhance the film overall. Also, if you are a fan of Marvel, if you plan on seeing The Avengers next year, stay for the credits. Marvels trademark after credits scene is still in effect and it's worth waiting for.

The Spot News: Universal Soldier 4 News

The Spot News: Universal Soldier 4 News

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER 4: A NEW DIMENSION will once again star JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME and DOLPH LUNDGREN while adding martial arts expert SCOTT ADKINS to the cast. Director JOHN HYAMS recently took to the film's FB page to talk and here's what he had to say:

"I spent a good part of today working with production designer Nate Jones, discussing design concepts for US4. Unlike US3, which was basically a location shoot, this one will involve a number of sets to be built, due to size of the 3D rigs, that call for larger spaces and removable walls. This allows us to design the sets to fit the action, instead of the other way around, which is nice. Still, this one will be an incredible challenge -- to shoot this amount of action in 3D on a tight schedule will require great preparation. We don't have the luxury of figuring things out on the set. Everyone will have to be extremely prepared. Stylistically, I'm planning on staging some action that plays out in long takes, where things transpire without cuts. In many ways, it's not just an action film -- it has horror elements, and also plays like a psychological thriller. It has a very dark, menacing tone. I want it to be an extremely intense experience for the viewer -- one that literally beats the shit out of the audience. As far as 3D is concerned, I still feel like Avatar did it better than anyone else, and it's not just because of the big budget. I feel like Cameron used 3D to make the experience more visceral, but he did it without gimmickry. Instead of having things pop out at the viewer, he created an environment that you could look into. I plan on taking that approach -- no gimmicks, no arrows flying at the camera. I want it to be another element of the overall design -- something that enhances the experience but doesn't draw attention to itself and take away from the story." I've been extremely busy preparing for the shoot. But, yes, Scott Adkins is one of the stars of the film, and I feel we're incredibly lucky to have him at this stage of his career. Andrei is back as well in a role we wrote specifically for him, and I'm equally excited to have him. I loved what he did in Regeneration, and I wanted to work with him again. None of this diminishes JC or DL's contributions to the film -- I feel these guys will only enhance the product as a whole, which is all I care about. The story is of my own creation, and, as I've told you before, in no way was dictated by anyone's schedule. It's the story I want to tell and it's designed to move, terrify and thrill the audience in the most intense way possible. I think it's going to be great and I'm unbelievably excited to work with everyone involved."

The Spot News: Soderbergh and Tatum are Stripping

The Spot News: Soderbergh and Tatum are Stripping

Steven Soderbergh has been inspired by the former stripper days of actor Channing Tatum. Tatum has no shame about his pants dropping days and apparently his old school stories are the stuff that movies are made from.

Soderbergh said this, "When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I'd ever heard for a movie. I said I wanted in immediately. It's sexy, funny and shocking. We're using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we're on the right track." Tatum then added, "This was a wild and pivotal time in my life and I couldn't be more thrilled to go down the rabbit hole with Steven."

Soderbergh will film Mr. Tatum's wild ride after doing LIBERACE with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. Then after the stipper movie, the director hopes to start shooting THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. with George Clooney.

The Spot News: No Marvel At Pixar

The Spot News: No Marvel At Pixar

This is actually rather horrible news.

Disney’s $4-billion purchase of Marvel in 2009 almost immediately sparked speculation that Pixar Animation might develop lesser-known comic properties like Ant-Man, Power Pack and even Doctor Strange.

When the deal was announced, Disney CEO Robert Iger conceded that possibility had been discussed. “Pixar boss John Lasseter talked to the Marvel guys about this and they all got excited about it,” he said in a conference call. “We think there’s ultimately some exciting product that come of that. Sparks will fly!”

But fast-forward two and a half years, and it appears any thought of an on-screen collaboration between Pixar and Marvel has been rejected.

“I’m chief creative officer of Disney Animation as well, and with Pixar it’s like, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing, guys,’” Lasseter tells IGN.com. “It’s a filmmaker-driven studio. All of the ideas come from the filmmakers themselves. Working with the filmmakers on ideas.”

When pressed at to whether there’s any possibility of that kind of team-up between the corporate siblings, Lasseter replies: “No, not at Pixar. We have The Incredibles, so we’ve done superheroes here ourselves and so we have that kind of history with Brad Bird doing The Incredibles.”

The Spot News: Armie Hammer is Lone Ranger?

The Spot News: Armie Hammer is Lone Ranger?

The Lone Ranger
has been riding a roller-coaster lately. First, Ryan Gosling was in talks to take the lead role, opposite Johnny Depp as the masked Texas Ranger’s Native American sidekick, Tonto. Then that fell through. Now there’s a new name in the running for the Gore Verbinski-directed Disney flick: Armie Hammer.

Hammer, who played Cameron Winklevoss and the head of Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network — Josh Pence was Tyler’s body — is said to be in “early talks” for the role, Deadline reports. That’s really all there is to the news at this point, but Deadline seems pretty confident he’ll be landing the role.

The Spot News: Call Of Duty Zombies

The Spot News: Call Of Duty Zombies

Call of Duty: Black Ops, one of the most popular games on the planet, has a unique online co-op mode in which up to four players fend off wave after wave of zombies. There’s no end point to the mode, you simply survive as long as you can using whatever tools are available on the map you’ve selected to play through.

But what does this have to do with movies? Well today brings a new downloadable content pack to the game which adds, among other things, the new zombies map, “Call of the Dead.” Activision has released a trailer focused specifically on that map, which apparently pays homage to Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero. It’s more than that, though: Romero is actually in the game, likeness, voice and all, with a story that seems to revolve around some kind of zombie movie production that goes horribly, horribly wrong.

But it is not just Romero that is in the game. Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Danny Trejo (Machete), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), and Michael Rooker also lend there likeness and voices as playable characters.

The zombie level will be available as downloadable content for "Call of Duty: Black Ops" on Xbox Live, May 3 from Activision and Treyarch.
