Superman/Batman: Apocalypse DVD Review

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse DVD Review
By Jose

Plot:

Batman discovers a mysterious teen-aged girl with super-human powers and a connection to Superman. When the girl comes to the attention of Darkseid, the evil overlord of Apokolips, events take a decidedly dangerous turn.

Review:

I truly found this entry to DC Comics animated movies to be the best one released so far. The story was great. If you have read the comic arc that this story is based off of or if you haven’t, it doesn’t matter because it is told here rather well while omitting and adding certain things here and there. Essentially this takes place after the first Superman/Batman movie Public Enemies where a kryptonian ship crashes to Earth with the cousin of Superman in it. Confusion and Batman ensue the scared girl until Superman takes her under his wing and shows her how to act and get accustomed to her new home. While both Batman and Wonder Woman are skeptical and worried that her being stronger and more dangerous than Superman himself along with her inexperience with her powers she needs to be trained. SO Wonder Woman takes her. Months pass and Darkseid gets interested in having a member of Superman’s family for himself especially to be the new leader of his Furies. So long story short, an army of Doomsday beasts get sent to kidnap Supergirl and Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Big Barda have to save her from Darkseid.

This brings me to the action of this animated movie and characters. It is great to see so many cameo appearances of the many characters from the DC universe. Not only do we get the title characters we have Big Barda, the Furies and Granny Goodness, the Amazons, Darkseid, and the new Supergirl. All great characters all involved is some great action and fight scenes. The Furies fight alone with Wonder Woman and Big Barda fighting all four of the Furies ( Lashina, Stompa, Gilotina, and Mad Harriet) kicking each others asses was great. The Amazons versus the Doomsday beasts was awesome and that final battle at the end with Superman, Darkseid, and Supergirl going at it at full force was just amazing to watch unfold.

The only thing I had a problem with was the voice acting. All were great and spot on. Even Giving Granny Goodness a deep gravelly man voice was good. But the voice for Darkseid was off and felt very normal. Now I have seen others give Darkseid a voice before but the best has always been Michael Ironside. He has the best voice for the dark god the same way that Mark Hamill is the voice for Joker. But after awhile it did grow on you I still missed that definite Darkseid voice.

Final Thoughts:

Hands down Superman/Batman Apocalypse is currently the best DC animated movie. The action and story are all great and keeps you entertained. The same way that Public Enemies brought to life the artwork of Ed McGuiness, Apocalypse brought to life the late Michael Turners artwork to life in such a great and wonderful way that did and honor to the original artwork. I highly recommend everyone who is a fan of either of the main characters or a DC comics fan or comics fan in general to pick this up and watch it. Same goes to everyone else pick this up and watch it it’s that good.

The Hot Chick Mini-Review

The Hot Chick Mini-Review

By Jose

For some odd reason I have been wanting to see this again recently. Not sure why but I am guessing I was in the mood for some older comedy. So to my surprise, this past weekend, I was able to catch The Hot Chick on TV. For a movie that came out in 2002 it still held up and is still pretty funny. From beginning to end I was laughing so hard. Rob Schneider is a hilarious comic. His portrayal of a high-school cheerleader trapped inside a man's body is so damn funny and spot on. There is not one scene or part alone that stands out but the whole movie is just fun and hilarity. Schneider does not get the credit he deserves especially now where he is does a cameo appearance here and there. I mean regardless of the types of movies he has starred in and carried himself you can not deny that they were funny. And The Hot Chick only just adds to that hilarity. On a side note the day before I saw The Hot Chick they had shown Scary Movie 2. I had forgotten that part two was my favorite of the original Scary Movie’s. The deformed handed butler. Ha ha

DVD Releases September 28th

By: Robert Acosta

Every tuesday is DVD day, you know this!

Lets see what this week has in store for us:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is available in Blu-Ray
  • Iron Man 2
  • Get Him To The Greek
  • The Killer Inside Me
  • Babies
  • King Kong(Original)
  • Family Guy: Partial Terms of Endearment
  • South Park: A Little Box of Butters
  • Cleveland Show(Season 1)
  • Scrubs(Season 9)
  • Scrubs(Full Series)
  • CSI(Season 10)
  • CSI(Season 1-Season 10)
The big draws this week are obviously going to be Iron Man 2 and Get Him to The Greek, both very strong movies. Iron Man 2, though not as good as its predecessor, is still among the better comic book movies out there and Get Him to The Greek is one of the better comedies of the year so, you can't go wrong with picking up either of them.

The original King Kong movie is making its debut on Blu-Ray only and if you are a fan of the film, you're better off picking up this edition than the recent King Kong starring Naomi Watts. The pacing of the recent King Kong is way too slow and overall it just lacks quality for it to stand up next to the original.

Finally, some of the major animations comedy shows are releasing good things this week. Family Guy: Partial Terms of Endearment is the DVD containing the one episode FOX refused to air on TV, so you know it should be good. South Park: A Little Box of Butters is a compilation of some of Butters best episodes, which he has a lot of them, so that would be a great pick up. Finally, The Cleveland Show Season 1 is on DVD. While some didn't find it nearly as funny as Family Guy, it had its moments and would be a good pick up on DVD as well.

The Spot News: Guillermo Del Toro is a Trollhunter

Guillermo del Toro sets up deal at DreamWorks Animation, will direct Trollhunters
by Jose

Guillermo del Toro has made another production deal at a studio. After setting up "Disney Double Dare You" at Disney, del Toro has moved to DreamWorks Animation for his next partnership. Del Toro will work as an executive producer/consultant on a number of projects already in development (including KUNG FU PANDA 2 and PUSS IN BOOTS) while directing his own animated feature TROLLHUNTERS.
Del Toro has already begun work writing the script for TROLLHUNTERS, a project he describes as combining "fairy tales with modern times."

The Spot News: Edward in Batman?

Edward Norton would gladly take a role in the next Batman film
By Jose

In an IGN UK interview Norton said that he wasn't against doing another superhero film. In fact, if a good role came along, he would snatch it right up.
"Chris Nolan's making the best ones out there by far. I'd do one with him. He's set a new bar for sure, and I think he's done a great, great job," said Norton. IGN asked if the actor would be up for playing a villain in the next BATMAN film, "That would be fun, I would not say no to that." They even asked if he would play the Riddler, "Your guys can put their votes in on that."

Norton as the Riddler? Nice idea.

Easy A Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Emma Stone as Olive
Penn Badgley as Todd
Amanda Bynes as Marianne
Thomas Haden Church as Mr. Griffith

Plot: A highschool girl, Olive, deals with the rumor mill in her school after she unintentionally spreads a lie about herself.

Review: How many times has a story like this actually happened in real life to you? I mean maybe not the exact situation but getting caught in the rumors that seem to spread like wildfire in High School. It happens all the time. Of course, this concept has been thrown into movies before but this one seemed a little more real and much funnier.

Emma Stone is pretty enjoyable in almost everything she does and shows a very good comedy side. She showed a little in Superbad, a little in The House Bunny(if that counts) but you never really saw a full out comedy side. You get a lot of it in Easy A and she definitely provides her fair share of laughs. Still looking for a full out starring role that will "define" her but no rush, it'll come.

If there is anybody, or a couple people, who provided great comedy, it's the parents of Olive. Played by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, they have got to be the funniest pair of parents in any movie. From little witty remarks to demonstrations of the old days(let your mind wander), they provided the more memorable moments of the movie.

The supporting cast is filled with some notable names that include Amanda Bynes, Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow and Alyson Michalka. They provide a solid supporting cast with Bynes surprisingly playing the "villain" of the movie. Though, Thomas Haden Church kind of proved to be a bland character. I don't know if it's because he's just an overall bland actor but he seemed very emotionless and judging by the events that happened to his character, it just didn't look right.
The story is pretty typical, nothing too new and that's good. Keeps it nice and simple, the plot written above pretty much sums it up. I did like the presentation of it all and they way it sort of comes full circle. You start with Emma Stone telling the story on a web cam and by the end you see, it was one of those movies where you start with the end, go back to the start and find your way back to the end and it worked really well here.

Overall, Easy A isn't what most people expected. Some expected a chick flick, some expected this immature high school story. What you got is a solid comedy film, a hint of moral at the end and overall, an enjoyable movie.

Piranha 3D 2010 Movie Review

Piranha 3D 2010 Movie Review
By Jose

Plot:

After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.

Review:

Fisherman Matthew Boyd (Richard Dreyfuss) is fishing in Lake Victoria, AZ when a small earthquake hits, splitting the lake floor and causing a whirlpool. Boyd falls in and is ripped apart by a school of piranhas that emerge from the cave/tunnel. Jake (Steven R. McQueen) is admiring attractive tourists as Spring Break begins. He reunites with his old crush, Kelly (Jessica Szohr) and meets Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell) an eccentric pornographer, as well as Danni (Kelly Brook), one of his actresses. Derrick convinces Jake to show him good spots on the beach for filming a pornographic movie. That night, Jake's mother, Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue), searches for the missing Matthew Boyd with Deputy Fallon (Ving Rhames),who has found Boyd's boat. They find his mutilated body and contemplate closing the beach down. The next morning, a lone cliff diver is attacked and consumed by the hungry fish. Soon after the wave of murderous fish start heading for the buffet of Spring Breakers.

What follows after that is a good amount of boobs, alcohol, and bloody carnage that I was fully not expecting to come off properly. But I was mistaken. Yes Piranha 3D is not going to win awards and may not have made the millions as other summer movies but it did deliver in a fun and blood filled movie. It wasn’t trying to be anything else but that. And it worked. I had a ton of fun with this movie. Did we get some girl on girl underwater full view nudity that lasted longer than it should that was also paired with classical music? Yes we did and it was hilarious. It took you out of the movie for a few minutes right before the horde of piranhas started to attack and boy did they attack.

There were two main action scenes that involved the piranhas, the boat and the Spring Break location in Lake Victoria. On the porn boat the first attack happens that instantly kills one of the porn girls and one camera man. Instantly. Soon we get the mutilation of Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell). And I mean mutilation. The guy obviously deserved it but man having the bottom half of your body eaten while you are still alive was horrible. Then hilarious when we get a 3D rendered penis being munched on by piranhas then spit out at you. Yes I just said that. It wasn’t a typo. The climax of the movie also end on the boat as well. With the sheriff saving her kids off the boat while trying to avoid being eaten. Then blowing up the boat and the majority of the piranhas along with it.

The other and most bloody and carnage filled scene happens in the middle of Spring Break area. It started simple enough with one person getting eaten from the ass up to downright mayhem and death. People getting chunks ripped out of them, limbs chewed off, eaten from the inside out, people climbing over each other to save themselves bloody water and gore. A jock kid tries to save himself with a boat and proceeds to hit and run over other people while saving himself. Which leads to an awful scene where a girls hair gets caught on the blades of the propeller of the motor and while he tries to start the engine the hair and girl get tangled more and more, while she is being attacked by piranhas until the motor fires up and rips the hair and skin completely off her head. Really, rips everything right off. Leaving muscle and her skull to be picked clean by the piranhas.

Final Thoughts:
The only problem I had with the movie is with how they ended it with a “hey there is something worse coming” we get a glimpse of it then credits. It leaves you hanging and wanting a few more minutes. Now for me whenever a movie leaves me wanting to see more and to feel like it should have been longer means it did a great job. Piranha 3D was the surprise movie for the end of summer. Especially when I feel that the last month of the summer movie season had a better amount of movies that I enjoyed in one month then all of summer.

Weekend Box Office Numbers 9/24-9/26

September is almost over and were nearing the month of halloween which brings us lots and lots of scary, horror movies. Some good, some bad, some really bad, whatever the case they are coming. So if you're a fan of horror movies, your favorite month of the year is coming. If not a fan, then see you in the theaters in November.

But wait, we still have this last week of September to cover and here are the weekend box office numbers from this past weekend:
  1. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps   $19 Million
  2. Legend of The Guardians: Owls of Ga'hoole   $16.3 Million
  3. The Town   $16 Million
  4. Easy A  $10.7
  5. You Again   $8.3 Million
  6. Devil   $6.5 Million
  7. Resident Evil: Afterlife   $4.9 Million
  8. Alpha and Omega 3D   $4.7 Million
  9. Takers   $1.7 Million
  10. Inception   $1.2 Million
Another typical weekend from the box office, with Wall Street coming in first with the Owls of Ga'hoole right behind them. Inception is probably in its last week in the top 10 so farewell to what was, most likely, the movie of the year.

The Town comes in at number 3 with a strong showing in its 2nd week on the top 10, though that may fall as of next week as well.

Next comes three wide release movies that include The Social Network, which is my pick for the top spot on the box office charts, Let Me In as Octobers first horror/halloween movie of the month and finally Case 39...October's second horror/halloween movie.

The Spot News: New Director Candidates for Superman

By: Robert Acosta

So the endless tale of Superman is finally looking for some directors. It seems like so long ago that Superman Returns hit the theaters, received very good reviews and then a sequel(or reboot?) got lost along the way. It seems like they're going the route of a reboot(who isn't these days?) and I, among many others, am confused.

Nonetheless, another Superman movie is eventually on the way and directors are being looked at. 5 to be exact. Those 5 are: Tony Scott, Zack Snyder, Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones and Johnathan Liebesman.

To give you some credentials on these guys...Matt Reeves has directed Cloverfield and Let Me in(coming out soon I might add), Duncan Jones has only directed a movie called Moon, Johnathan Liebesman directed both Darkness Falls and more recently the Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Tony Scott has Man On Fire under his belt and finally, Zack Snyder has Watchmen on his resume.

A nice wide range of choices here but who is most suited to take on this daunting task?(See what I did there?) It's hard to come up with a clear cut choice. Snyder having done Watchmen already has some experience with comic book adaptations, even if it was a boring one. Liebesman on the other hand has more experience with darker stories, if Superman goes in that direction.

Which ever way it goes, this all makes for interesting news.

The Spot News: Who will be the love interest in the reboot of the Spiderman movie(s)?

By: Robert Acosta

Not too many details have been coming out about the reboot of the Spiderman movie(s). We've got our Spiderman/Peter Parker in Andrew Garfield and we have the director Marc Webb. Nothing else has really been set in stone.

The love interest has been somewhat of a hot topic, more so than the villain talk. Does that mean the villain was already chosen and no one is saying anything? We'll see. Until then, we have some rumored women for the love interest for Peter Parker.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the front runners for the potential love interest of Spiderman are down to Emma Stone and Mia Wasikowska.

I hope the vagueness of this article is showing you how crazy this how reboot of Spiderman is. Nonetheless, I can't see either of those fine young actresses playing Gwen Stacy but I could see either playing Mary Jane and that seems the general belief.

I'm a bit biased when it comes to this situation because I love Emma Stone. Beautiful woman who shows both comedy and edge in her previous roles like Zombieland, Easy A, House Bunny, etc.

Let's hope for more news regarding the Spiderman movie to ease this confusion.

The Spot News: Captain America pics

First Shots of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers (Captain America)

By Jose

As the title says here are the first pics of Evans as Steve Rogers wearing rubber feet most likely due to a stunt or action scene.

the Spot News: Ryan's Pick

Ryan Reynolds will have to pick between RIPD and Deadpool
by Jose

It's no secret that Ryan Reynolds might be the busiest actor in Hollywood today. But it appears to have reached a point that he's going to have to make some hard decisions.
Talking to io9 to promote BURIED, Reynolds acknowledges he's probably going to have to pick between RIPD and DEADPOOL, as he won't have time for both.

Reynolds himself has excitedly talked about DEADPOOL in the past, and with rumors that Robert Rodriguez is being pursued to direct, I just think there's too much potential in the project for it to collapse. I don't think it should even happen without Reynolds, though RIPD could probably soldier on.

The Spot News: Godzilla fight!

The New Godzilla Will Have Another “Monster, Or Monsters” To Fight
by Jose

Brian Rodgers has been spilling the giant, city crushing beans on the Legendary Picture’s plans for a 2012 Godzilla reboot. Here are some of them:

The project’s origin as a 3D IMAX movie

How he realigned the concept as a wide-release for digital 3D as back as 2007

That Legendary want to homage the traditional Godzilla character (perhaps more properly, Gojira) and not make “the same decisions” as the last US Godzilla picture

So, that means no Iguana-style anatomy

The project compares to Batman Begins

Godzilla is going to be a CG character in a live-action film.

There’s going to be another monster, or monsters, that Godzilla will fight. Not having this goes against the “spirit of the character”.

The Spot News: Inception...video game?

By: Robert Acosta

I gotta say, I enjoyed the hell out of Inception which I think is the majority view of what Inception was to people. As I watching it the thought did arise in me, what if Inception were a video game? I could see it as a video game somehow. I might have seen the future when I said that in the theater that day.

Variety is reporting that in a press conference with director of Inception and the two previous Batman films, Christopher Nolan is looking into the idea of making a video game out of Inception. Nolan goes on to say ""We are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can't fit into a feature film. That's something we've been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years."

Could this tarnish the reputation of Inception? Video games based off of movies don't do too well and vice versa. For some reason, I could see this being really good. If Nolan gets involved in it and i'm not sure how he could with many important, time sucking projects coming up. Like oh, I don't know...the next Batman film?!

Let this news sink in but what do you think about all of this?

Coming Soon!: The Social Network

By: Robert Acosta

One of the most talked about films of the year is only 9 days away from wide release, unless of course you're making it to an early screening of the film. That film is The Social Network.

Unlike the seemingly unnecessary and way too late release of online porn movie Middle Men, The Social Network is right on time with it's story about the creation of Facebook. They're going to tell the story of all the ups and tons of downs that came with making Facebook. The fame, the fortune, the women, the lawsuits, everything under the sun about Facebook.

I've been excited for the movie for a few months now, how could you not be? For the millions of people on Facebook, you get to see how the site dominating your life, came to be what it is. What could go wrong?

Well as great as this movie looks, I have a couple of warning signs that could lead to a disaster movie.

For one, the cast is a bit boring. Jesse Eisenberg, though heralded as one of the better young actors, reminds me too much of Michael Cera and maybe less than that. Eisenberg can be a bit boring at times, ex: Adventureland. Of course he had Zombieland that turned out to be a big hit but I think that wasn't influenced by Eisenberg being the most talked about thing in Zombieland, but he had his moments. From the trailers, he looks much more witty than usual so maybe I'm in for a surprise. Justin Timberlake is a decent actor, entertaining and could be the most interesting character in the film. After that you got Brenda Son who, as beautiful as she is, her role could be very minimal. Also thrown into the mix is Andrew Garfield, future spiderman/Peter Parker, currently not well known and still has a lot to prove.

Another huge warning sign is the amount of hype this movie is getting. Though the trailers have showed us a lot to be excited about, it's huge. In recent memory both Inception and The Last Airbender come to mind. I'll give you a hint, only one of those movies were better than good and lived up to the hype.

On the other hand, it seems like a good, true to the story, story that people will want to hear. It was given a hard pg-13 rating. I say hard because it supossedly takes place in college and I know not a lot of college experiences are not pg-13.

Finally, the tag line intrigues me a bit. It goes "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." I definitely want to see the conflict arise, cause it seems like an interesting one regarding who made Facebook and if the idea was stolen.

The Social Network is due out on Friday, October 1st.

The only "big" release for this week regarding movies is Robin Hood. A decent effort at trying to give a different story to the Robin Hood legacy but it was way too boring for a story that sounded intriguing at first. The delivery of it all was just way off.

Next week brings us a couple of big releases in terms of both movies and TV shows, so come back next week to check out the DVD releases.

The Spot News: Voltron Movie still in the works.

Voltron still coming!
By Jose

It looks like the oft-rumored VOLTRON movie may finally be gaining some traction. It appears that Atlas Entertainment has taken the reins on the project and is gearing up a pretty impressive pitch. Apparently, they've hired the currently hot screenwriting tag-team of Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The names may not sound familiar to you, but they might soon. The duo wrote the upcoming CONAN flick, and are currently scribing the DR. STRANGE and UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE adaptations. Now for that whole "Christmas morning" part. The highlight of the pitch comes in the form of a handful of wicked (and carnage-heavy) concept art. Looks like they're definitely not prepping a Saturday morning cartoon for the kiddies. The Spot News: Del Toro is Mad

Some news on Del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness

By Jose

For years, Guillermo Del Toro has been trying to make his dream project, an adaptation of HP Lovecraft's arctic terror tale AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. And while it's closer (thanks to Universal and producer James Cameron), it's still a dream.

As Del Toro tells Deadline: "We are not green lit, we are still budgeting and designing, and we are partners on this. I believe in my heart we are going to be making this movie in June of next year. We are budgeting the creatures and met with Spectral Motion and ILM, where Dennis Muren told me the sweetest words ever when he said, no one has ever seen monsters like this. That was truly one of the highlights of my fat life, a demigod like Muren saying that."

At least he sounds confident, as should an award-winning filmmaker with history's highest grossing director in his corner. As for how the 3D aspects will be incorporated, GdT says "It’s hard to say without spoiling it. The way the creatures are rendered and done is going to bring forth an aspect of Lovecraft that has not been done on live action films. Part of my speech was, I’m putting all the chips I have accumulated in 20 years as a director, betting them on a single number. This is not just a movie and then move on to the next. It’s do or die time for me."

The Spot News: Del Toro and Superman?

Guillermo Del Toro Has Turned Down The New Superman Film
By Jose

It’s all in the title, folks. Guillermo del Toro was offered the director’s chair for the next Superman film, and he turned it down.
And why? It would appear it was to direct At the Mountains of Madness. Can’t say I blame him. Del Toro has been wanting to finally direct At the Mountain of Madness for a while so better for him.

The Spot News: Sacha Baron Cohen is a Queen

Sacha Baron Cohen to play Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen has closed the deal to play Queen front-man Freddie Mercury in a film focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985.

TheSpot News: Another mutant for X-Men

Alex Gonzalez joins X-Men First Class as Riptide
by Jose

Let's throw another mutant onto the pile, shall we?
Basically I'm at a loss now. Are we just throwing him in for the hell of it? I mean, they could build toward a Marauders storyline, but again I'm not sure here. Seems they are just seeing how many mutants they can add without screwing up the movie. Only time will tell.

Weekend Box Office Numbers 9/17-9/19

By: Robert Acosta

After the last couple weeks of seeing the box office being dominated by sub-par movies, glad to see the box office headed by decent movies.

Lets take a look at this past weekends box office numbers:

  1. The Town- $23.8 Million
  2. Easy A- $18.2 Million
  3. Devil- $12.6 Million
  4. Resident Evil: Afterlife- $10.1 Million
  5. Alpha and Omega- $9 Million
  6. Takers- $3 Million
  7. The American- $2.7 Million
  8. Inception- $2 Million
  9. The Other Guys- $2 Million
  10. Machete- $1.7 Million
I was very excited for both The Town and Devil, still haven't had the chance to see either but will be checking them out this week. Glad that they respectively found their way in the top 3 this week. Resident Evil fell to the 4 spot, which doesn't surprise me much. Inception and The Other Guys still hanging around, with Inception nearing the $300 million dollar mark but unlikely that it will make it there.

Next weekend comes a very slow week, so expect this top ten to look fairly similar next week. Movies like Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga'hoole and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps will find their way into the top 10 but I don't see either being number 1 next week.

Alpha and Omega 3D Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Justin Long as Humprey
Hayden Panetierre as Kate
Dennis Hopper as Tony
Danny Glover as Winston

NOTE: This is an animated movie so the cast provided above pertains to their voices for the characters.

Plot: Two wolves, Humprey and Kate, stray away from their packs and have to find their way home before things between the two different packs get out of hand.

Review: This was one of those movies that I randomly chose to watch and bad timing really made this movie the only choice for me at the time. Nonetheless, can't complain.

Of the movies released this nearly past weekend, Alpha and Omega was pretty over looked. With The Town, Devil and Easy A all out, it's clear that this is the lesser of the four movies. With that said, it's not all bad. For all the families out there, it's a decent movie to go take your kids too. It has its cute moments and those small funny parts backed up with an alright story.

The story revolves around two wolves from two completely different packs. The male Alpha wolf, Humprey voiced by Justin Long, has a crush on one of the female Omega wolves, Kate voiced by Hayden Panetierre. They aren't allowed to mate because of the difference in pack but Humprey is determined to break those rules.

As for the 3D, it normally works in animated movies but there weren't too many effects. So on that end, the movie really fails as many 3D movies tend to do.

The story between Humprey and Kate is a out-dated one. Two people(or wolves) are not allowed to mingle and date but they find a way to work things out and everyone approves. So nothing here is new. If you're into that cliche story, then this movie is for you.

The ending of the movie struck me only because it draws huge similarities to The Lion King. A stampede of caribou come along as the two packs are arguing amongst themselves so the wolves must find safety. As it's going on, you get an overhead shot of a couple of stragglers being chased by the caribou. It's almost a mirror image of one very popular scene in The Lion King. In remembering that scene, there is another reference to Lion King..sort of. The "Midnight Howl" that takes place during the movie gathers all the wolves to howl with each other, mails pairing up with females. The howl ends up being more of a vocal harmony between all the wolves and that once again brought me to the Lion King and the songs in that movie.

Overall, Alpha and Omega is a light hearted kids movie. Not saying that's a bad thing but you're better off going to see The Town, Devil or Easy A this week.

The Last Kiss Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Zach Braff as Michael
Rachel Bilson as Kim
Jacinda Barrett as Jenna
Blythe Danner as Anna

Plot: As a group of longtime friends grow up together they meet a time in their life where decisions about the rest of their lives are being made.

Review: Call this nerdy but I know that back on the 15th was the 4 year anniversary of the theatrical release of this movie. I wanted to coincide this review with the previous review of (500) days of summer as they are strikingly similar. Also managed to post it on close to the anniversary as well.

I'm in no way embarassed by the fact that I only managed to find out about The Last Kiss by watching Jackass: Number Two. I was flipping through the trailers featured on the DVD, came across The Last Kiss and knew I had to buy that DVD immeadiately.

The Last Kiss is one of those growing up tales, watching a group of longtime friends handle manhood or just general adulthood. Can I relate? No, I haven't hit that 30 year old, settling down with a family point yet. Nonetheless, it felt like a real experience, much like 500 Days of Summer.

I haven't seen too much of Zach Braff, few episodes of Scrubs only but he really put in a great performance. People have argued that The Last Kiss was his best performance, next to Garden State and his work on Scrubs. Without having to see the rest, I agree! His relationshop with everyone from his longtime friends, his girlfriend, Jenna who is played by Jacinda Barrett and the girl he was having an affair with, Kim played by sexy Rachel Bilson all seemed fairly natural.

Throw in the always beautiful Rachel Bilson into the mix, how could this movie not be entertaining? Loved every minute she's in. More than just the visual part but she's actually a pretty decent actress.

The big draw to the movie for me was the story, a very solid story. May not be original in anyway but it still works. It's the basic man has trouble with settling down with one woman concept so he has this last adventure with a younger girl, feels bad about what he does so he attempts to patch things up with his girlfriend. The way it all plays out keeps you really intrigued the whole time. On top of that story is an underlying story that is almost exactly like Braffs and his girlfriends, story. Only difference is the people involved, which in this case is Jennas parents.

If you liked 500 Days of Summer, you're gonna like The Last Kiss. The stories and topics are similar and they both feature great actors and actresses alike. Also, one day you may be put in these relationship, growing up type problems and it's always good to have an idea of what to do during these problems.

(500) Days of Summer Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom Hansen
Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn
Geoffrey Arend as McKenzie
Chloe Moretz as Rachel Hansen

Plot: When his girlfriend breaks up with him, Tom(Joseph Gordon-Levitt), reflects on the days with his ex-girlfriend and tries to figure out where it all went wrong.

Review: When I saw the trailer for this movie early 2009, I had this misinformed idea that the movie was going to be a typical love story and that all this massive hype surrounding it was just that, nothing more. I was horribly wrong.

It was called one of the best movies of 2009 and rightfully so. I made the mistake of missing it in the theater but refused to make that mistake when I saw it on HBO.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is definitely on the great young actors list with great movies like (500) Days of Summer and Inception. He delivers what most male lead roles in romance movies don't and that is reality. His reactions to everything just seems natural, as if that would actually happen in 9 out of 10 relationship situations. Not to mention that I've had the same reaction to similar situations and most romance movies don't deliver that emotion.

Zooey Deschanel is charming, as usual. Always beautiful and always gripping the heart of the males. Ironically, she also injects a dose of reality into the role that is usually filled with hapless women that play the victim. Her free spirit mentality comes off as genuine and oddly enough creates great chemistry between Gordon-Levitt and herself.

The story is pretty straight forward. Boy meets girl, Boy likes girl, Boy and girl go out, Girl doesn't want serious relationship, Boy does, all hell breaks loose from there. Viewing the relationship in its high moments is great and watching the relationship break down is saddening.

There is on effect that the movie pulls off really nicely. Certain movies like to start at the end then go to the beginning and then work their way back to the end. Most of those movies end up being decent, it's a nice spin on things. In (500) Days of Summer they skip around and it really helps explain the story perfectly. The movie may start at day 1 but it jumps around. It'll go from day 33 to day 288 and then back to day 40. Meanwhile, among those 3 distant days, it explains the situation amazingly.

You can't go wrong with (500) Days of Summer. The story is simple, which makes it great. It features tremendously talented actors and actresses and everything is seemingly down really well. It really was one of the best movies of 2009.

Coming Soon! Devil

Devil

By Jose

I have to say this first. An interesting and most likely frightening horror movie with M Night Shyamalan's name attached. Going to suck big time. Well no. No it won't. Here is why: M Night is not directing. That is right. Someone else is taking the seat. So there is hope. Devil is based on a idea from M Night that is under the umbrella of The Night Chronicles. A bunch of movies made from his ideas. Well I have to say regardless of his ideas or not or how much influence he has on the movies made (I hope very limited) Devil looks like it will be a "fun" horror that will scare and unnerve everyone. Just the idea of being stuck in an elevator is frightening but what if one of the people stuck with you isn't who or what they seem. I m looking forward to get spooked and a bit scared Devil. I just hope there is no "twist" ending.

DVD Releases September 14th

I hope people bought MacGruber last week on DVD! But if not, it's ok they're are some goodies to pick up this week on DVD. Lets take a look:
Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time
  • Letters to Juliet

  • Glee(Season 1)
  • Grey's Anatomy(Season 6)

For fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, each movie is now available in Blu-Ray. Excited?

Finally, the fall season for TV shows is under way so it's no surprise that they're have been a huge amount of shows coming out with DVDs. So, this week is Glees award winning first season with a massive 7 disc set and the hit show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and their fifth season.

Weekend Box Office Numbers 9/10- 9/12

Another weekend goes by and only one movie has a strong showing. This is exactly what September movies are about.

Lets take a look at the Box office numbers from this weekend

  1. Resident Evil 3D    $27.7 Million
  2. Takers   $6.1 Million
  3. The American   $5.9 Million
  4. Machete   $4.2 Million
  5. Going The Distance   $3.8 Million
  6. The Other Guys   $3.6 Million
  7. The Last Exorcism   $3.5 Million
  8. The Expendables   $3.3 Million
  9. Inception   $3 Million
  10. Eat Pray Love   $2.9 Million
It was no surprise to me that Resident Evil took the top spot with nearly $28 Million this weekend. Add in the inflated price of movie tickets and the always high prices of 3D movies and that number isn't nearly as impressive as most may see it.

I've been saying this for weeks now but it's still great to see Inception and The Other Guys in the top 10. Hell, they're not even that far off from the 2nd and 3rd spot. Keep in mind that Inception has been out for 9 weeks and is still in the top 10.

Next week we have three wide releases that I think are ready to change the way the top 10 looks. Looks like either Devil or The Town is going to take over the top spot next week with Easy A hovering around the 4 or 5 spot. I'm excited for devil and all of a sudden want to see The Town. Easy A is just a good throw in and should be fun, just because of Emma Stone.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Zachary Gordon as Greg Heffley
Robert Capron as Rowley Jefferson
Devon Bostick as Rodrick Heffley
Laine MacNeil as Patty Ferrell

Plot: A middle school bound boy, Greg, tries to become popular and ultimately, get on the class favorites list in the yearbook.

Review: I'll be honest, I wasn't too excited for this movie but it was a movie that I slightly wanted to check out in the beginning of this year. I waited for it on DVD just in case it didn't do so well and I have to say, that was a great decision on my part. This movie is far from what middle school could actually be like.

After watching multiple trailers of the movie, I expected a couple of small comedic moments, a crazy middle school and a moral at the end of the story. They delivered on the small comedic moments but there was something about the characters that just didn't sit right with me and the moral at the end of the story didn't come across as clear because of the characters.

The main character, Greg, is entering middle school so we can assume he's about 10 or 11 years old. He has got to be the cockiest asshole in middle school history. That's where the trouble starts for me. The movie is called "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and not once does the main character acknowledge that he is a wimpy kid. He just has this completely misinformed idea that he deserves to be popular and have all these friends, meanwhile treating his best friend like crap. More than anything, Greg comes off as an annoying little prick.

On the other hand Greg's best friend, Rowley, made the movie a tiny bit enjoyable. Hopefully somebody who runs the Nickelodeon or Disney channels were watching the movie because he would easily be on a show for either channel and be funny. He the had the look of a wimpy kid more than the main character and played it much better.

I can't say there was much of a moral to the story. I don't think the main character Greg learned absolutely anything from this and he only looked slightly changed, but barely.

I like to see the good in movies so I usually don't trash movies like this but damn I barely enjoyed that movie. It annoyed me, angered me at times, the moral disappeared. Small comedic parts and Robert Capron as Rowley Jefferson weren't enough to make this even passable to me.

The Spot News: First Shots of Emma Frost

First shot of Emma Frost in X-Men First Class

By Jose

Matthew Vaughn went through a number of worthy candidates for Emma Frost for his FIRST CLASS X-movie but finally decided on Mad Men's January Jones, who certainly looks the part.
Here’s the first shots of Jones on set "in costume" as Emma Frost. She's in all white with a giant fur hat, and I know that this was Frost's look, and maybe this reads better on camera, but I have to say she kind of looks like a Austin Powers extra here. Although it does fit with the supposed time line of the movie taking place in the 60’s and 70’s.

The Spot News: Unbreakable 2?

M.Night's next "Chronicle" will basically be Unbreakable 2?

Universal's DEVIL has pretty much disassociated itself with M. Night Shyamalan after reports of heckling the director's name came from various theaters even though he hatched the story and produced the flick.
Despite the public's complete disinterest in the Shyamalan brand, he and Universal are still moving forward with more "Night Chronicles", the series of horror films based on his ideas.
The next "Night Chronicle" will be TWELVE STRANGERS, which may or may not be helmed by Daniel Stamm. And after that? Well, let's just call it UNBREAKABLE 2.
In an interview with MTV, Shyamalan revealed this much about the third "Night Chronicle": "I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to 'Unbreakable' for one of the 'Night Chronicles.' It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for 'Unbreakable,' and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.'"
"I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, 'This could be a standalone movie.' I'll just say it: the third 'Night Chronicles' movie is what would have been the sequel to 'Unbreakable'. So now I need to come up with a new idea."
Shyamalan goes on to prove that, generally, he's still unaware what the hell he's talking about: "I love that movie. 'Unbreakable' and 'The Village' are my favorite two movies of mine."

The Spot News: Piranha sequel news

Piranha 3D sequel wants YOU to choose which celeb dies!

Alexandre Aja's PIRANHA 3D didn't do amazing at the box ofice but it seems it pleased the majority of genre fans out there who gave it a shot. Personally I was expecting a little bit more from the flick but in the end I left the theater with a smile on my face. So when news broke that The Weinstein Company were already moving forward with a sequel it put another smile on my face. And it seems they're wasting no time in getting things rolling!
Well today's update doesn't really have anything to do with the actual production of the sequel but it does give us an idea of where The Weinstein's are going with it! You see the folks over at the NY Post recently got the lowdown on an interesting route The Weinsteins are planning on going with the PIRANHA 3D sequel. It seems Jerry O'Connell's character from the film was a hit with fans so The Weinsteins and company have decided to make the sequel interactive! What does that mean exactly? Check it:
Fans will be asked to participate in an online contest to vote for the celebrity they'd like to see eaten, or killed by other methods, in the sequel.
Nice!

Coming Soon! Resident Evil Afterlife

Coming Soon! Resident Evil Afterlife 3D

By Jose

Resident Evil Afterlife 3D

So here comes the fourth installment of a franchise that borrowed very loosely from the actual source material. Yet a fourth movie has been made, due to the other previous three making a profit. How? I am not too sure. I have enjoyed the franchise for what they are to me: a alternative take of the Resident Evil universe. But with the fourth and fifth parts of the game series out and more than worthy being made directly into movies we keep on getting this odd movie franchise. With Afterlife it seems they are trying to remedy the lack of continuity from the games by including villains and I am guessing a form of “Las Plagas”. Also by finally putting Wesker into the forefront. Will Afterlife be good? Not sure. Will it make money? Yes of course. It was filmed in 3D instead of converted and people will go to see this. I want to see the executioner from the fifth game in action. But will the injection of actual game characters help bring this series a new breath of life or will the continued lack of actual game story line finally nail the coffin shut? Well soon see.

Machete Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Danny Trejo as Machete
Jessica Alba as Sartana
Michelle Rodriguez as Luz
Jeff Fahey as Booth

Plot: After the guys who hired him turn their back on him, Machete is out for revenge against his ex-boss and anyone who stands in his way.

Review: Machete is one of those fun movies that could be taken seriously as a full out action movie. At the same time, you can just look at it for all the fun ways someone dies and have a good time with it. The movie really does a good job of offering both options.

Machete features an interesting cast filled with beautiful girls and Danny Trejo. I'm sure some people only saw the movie just for Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and even the return of Lindsay Lohan. I can't blame them, that was my initial reason too. Machete offers a lot more than just great eye candy and good action.

The story is pretty decent, it all makes sense. A man gets hired to kill someone, unknowingly gets set up as the fall man, police are after him, he goes on a rampage to get revenge. Nothing too complex, no Inception here folks.

I've mentioned this a couple times already but the action is what makes the movie so fun. The non stop killing, almost comedic, is really what makes it stand out. Danny Trejo may have put himself in the badass conversation. Had both Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez on top of him, murdered practically everyone(including a famous 80's action star) and used many different weapons to do so. Hell, the guy calls himself Machete. Bad ass.

If you're looking for a good way to just sit back, relax for 1 hour and 45 minutes, I can't really think of a better way than to just go out and watch Machete.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World Review

Scott Pilgrim VS The World Review

By Jose

Plot:

Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.

Review:

Scott Pilgrim VS The World, simply put, is about a guy in a band finding his true love. But his true love comes with seven obstacles that Scott must defeat before Ramona and Scott can truly be together and those obstacles so happen to be seven, evil, super powered, and angry exes. Mayhem, hilarity, and just about everything follow Scott in his adventure.

I was going into this movie with the intention to be entertained and stimulated in the most enjoyable way possible. After the credits rolled I realized that Scott Pilgrim did not disappoint. Edgar Wright did a wonderful job taking the graphic novel and creating a movie version that not only stayed true to the source but ramped it up and pushed the dial to ten.

The huge cast: Micheal Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Alison Pill (Kim Pine), Johnny Simmons (Young Neil), Ellen Wong (Knives Chau), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells), Anna Kendrick (Stacey Pilgrim), Aubrey Plaza (Julie Powers), Mary Elizabeth Winstead ( Ramona Flowers), Ben Lewis (Other Scott), Keita Saito and Shota Saito (Katayanagi Twins), Satya Bhabha (Matthew Patel), Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), Brie Larson (Envy Adams), Mae Whitman (Roxie Richter), Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram), Jason Swhartzman (Gideon Graves) were all amazing and played there parts of either friends of Scott or enemies pretty well.

The graphics were pretty much top notch and very comic book like. Which fits with the graphic novel. Some of the graphics and CGI were amazing like in the Katayanagi vs. Scott battle of the bands fight were an electric/sound wave gorilla fought a twin headed electric/sound wave dragon. To just the small little additions here and there made the movie richer in feel and overall enjoyment.

Final Thoughts:

Regardless of Scott Pilgrim being a “failure” due to not making money. And why would box office receipts determine a movie being good or bad? Everyone loved it. The whole theater going audience when I saw the movie enjoyed themselves and left happy. Edgar Wright and the cast did an awesome job and I truly loved this movie and can’t wait until it is released on DVD.

The Spot News: Clash of the Titans 2

The Spot News: Clash of The Titans 2

CLASH OF THE TITANS 2:

I'm not sure how many of you were fans of Louis Leterrier's CLASH OF THE TITANS. The 3D from what I hear was a bit of a mess (2D for me). Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are apparently vying for director Jonathan Liebesman to helm a sequel. The studio has been working around the clock to get a sequel going ever since the movie grossed $500 million worldwide. Leterrier made it clear since last April that he would not return for a sequel.

Update: Liebesman will indeed direct the sequel.

DEADPOOL:

Ryan Reynolds is still wanting to do a solo Deadpool film-- however
he's a busy guy and so is Deadpool directing hopeful Robert Rodriguez. The director says that he really likes the script, but there's just so much going on for him right now. Between promoting Machete and directing Spy Kids 4 there's not a lot of breathing room. Rodriguez has said, "We haven't really gotten into the discussion, but they are trying to make a certain small window that's going to be tough because of Spy Kids. If they push it back, it would be a lot better for me."

DVD Releases September 7th

With September comes some not so great movies in the theaters. I didn't say anything about DVDs and September may produce some DVDs worthy of rental and even purchase.

Here are the DVD releases:
Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-ray
  • MacGruber(Unrated Edition)
  • Killers
  • Camp Rock 2:The Final Jam
  • Solitary Man
  • Chuck(Season 3)
  • Smallville(Season 9)
  • Supernatural(Season 5)
  • Megadeth: Rust in Peace(live)
  • Final Destination Collection
  • Wall Street
Another week filled with possible buys and something different for each type of style. Don't let the numbers or the reviews fool you, MacGruber was pretty damn funny. Bad timing mixed with a bad history of Saturday Night Live character movies not doing so great really buried this movie too early. If you have the opportunity to rent or buy MacGruber on DVD or Blu-ray, do it.

Another possible buy would be Camp Rock 2:The Final Jam. If you're into musicals, liked the first Camp Rock or just want to occupy your kids for 2 hours, this is the movie for you. With a sing-a-long feature, extended scenes and behind the scene extras included on the DVD, you can't go wrong.

Finally, for anyone following the fall season TV show line-up, Chuck, Supernatural and Smallville are coming back with a new season soon so if you missed the prior season or just enjoyed the prior season, the DVD and Blu-ray of the prior season are out today.

Weekend Box Office Numbers September 3rd-5th

So the first week removed from the summer season of movies is in the books and it was not a strong one as many could have and probably did predict. An interesting set of movies came out this past weekend which included Machete, The American and Going The Distance. All three had the potential to be pretty strong movies, all offering something different this weekend.

Enough of the extra talk! On to the numbers for this past weekends box office numbers!:
NOTE: These numbers do not include Labor Day.

1. The American- $12.9 Million
2. Takers- $11.5 Million
3. Machete- $11.3 Million
4. The Last Exorcism- $7.6 Million
5. Going The Distance- $6.9 Million
6. The Expendables- $6.6 Million
7. The Other Guys- $5.4 Million
8. Eat Pray Love- $4.9 Million
9. Inception- $4.5 Million
10. Nanny McPhee Returns- $3.6 Million

I would like to think that having a movie in the $20-25 million dollar range for an opening weekend is a solid place for a good movie to be. With that said, no movie reached $13 million this weekend. Unless you count The American which has been out since September 1st made $16.1 Million. Still, this weekend was a bust. I'm a little angered by Takers edging out Machete for the 2nd spot, Machete was a much stronger film than Takers. Expect a review for Machete this week.

As for next week, Resident Evil: Afterlife seems destined to take the top spot next week, at least if that film isn't a total bust. Either way, the slow month of September is under way.

Robert Acosta:
September has never truly been a great month for movies. Lots of movies get dumped in here and most of them end up bombing at the box office and getting mostly negative reviews. While a lot of the movies seem to fit that mold, there are some movies to have some hope for.

The first week of September features two action packed movies in The American and Machete, both of which look like a good time at the movies. I've never been too much of a fan of George Clooney but he kind of looks like a bad-ass in The American. On the other hand, what is not to like about Machete. You got two amazingly beautiful girls to look forward to in Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba, along with some good old fashioned action created by Danny Trejo and seemingly Cheech Marin.

It seems like the Resident Evil series may be taking a turn for the best with Afterlife. But is it too late? After 3 sub-par movies could a good or great 4th movie help the series at all? Hell I could be counting my chickens before they hatch by saying this movie will be good, cause it very well be the like the other 3.

September 17th features a couple of movies that look interesting. You got Devil which just looks flat out creepy and a fun time for people who are into horror/ mystery type movies. Then you got Easy A with the knock out Emma Stone in it which looks like a funny movie about the twist of kind of being  whore. Weird but she makes being a whore look good.

The last week of September also features interesting movies but they seem like movies that could be a bust. I'm a big Shia LeBeouf fan, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps looks interesting but I feel a bust coming on. I can't quite put my finger on it, i'm just hoping i'm wrong.

You Again casts two beautiful girls in Kristen Bell and Odette Yustman clashing against each other in what probably won't do well in the box office.

Finally, The Legends of the Guardian: Owls of Ga'hoole looks beautiful. Something that is in 3D and rightfully deserves to be in 3D. But every time I see the trailer, I leave with the same feeling. What is this movie about?

Jose Diaz:
Kids heading for or back to college. Last minute back to school sales. Yup Summer is over and with it the Summer movie season. Which felt rather like a let down this year. Thankfully we had Scott Pilgrim VS the World and The Expendables to help console us at the end. So September. What will you offer us?

September is overall not a great month for movies due to summer ending and everyone back to school and work. With that said, there are a few offerings that seem to be good viewings. Plus a rather large amount of limited releases. Which is odd.

So the first two weeks we have The American starring George Clooney as a James Bond type character like movie thingy. See what I did there? Not interest in it at all yet with George it will make money. Machete looks great and seems to follow the Expendables formula of action movies done right.

We are also getting another Resident Evil movie. Which looks like it might try to be good by incorporating some aspects of the last two games. Plus it was filmed in 3D not converted. We’ll see what happens with this one. Then you have the obligatory romantic comedy of the month in Going The Distance with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Drew Barrymore seemed to stop aging and still good looking. Ben Affleck tries to make a comeback from whatever vacation he was in with The Town.

Later in the month of September movies seem to pick up a bit of steam. Easy A looks to be funny with a good young star cast and a take on the Scarlet Letter. Devil looks to be a rather fun horror movie about being stuck in an elevator with what possibly could be the devil himself.

At the end we get a cool looking CG movie about owls in The Legends of The Guardians. Another comedy about relationships and old grudges in You Again which looks fun. And finally a sequel to a great movie, that I think should not have been made, in Wall Street Money Never Sleeps or some shit like that. Then you have the eleven, yes eleven, limited release movies that includes Buried with Ryan Reynolds which looks great and want to catch when and if it comes out at my theater.
