Review:

Since part four of this series (which was supposed to be the last) made a decent amount of money, we were given part five. Now unlike a certain someone *coughRobertcough* The Final Destination series has been a favorite of mine. All based on a simple premise of you may be able to cheat Death but you can’t escape it. All the movies dealt with escaping Death only to be killed or reaped one by one in shocking and deadly ways. And Final Destination 5 is no different.

Now I am not saying it wasn’t good. What I am saying is that this part was actually better than part four. The cast or victims this time around were given a bit more screen time other than being killed. So we got a chance to know them a bit more than usual. The deaths this time around were good and kind of out there. But before I go on I must talk about what makes this series standout and that is the opening death scene.

We all remember the plane crash and the highway crash. The roller coaster scene and the race car mayhem. Well for part five we get a huge bridge collapse. Cars falling and sliding around. Bridge crumbling. Burning tar falling on people. The suspension wires snapping and slicing people in half. Rebar impaling. Falling people landing on the stone pillars and smacking the water below. Now it wasn’t the best opening death scene of the series, I have to go with the highway scene from part two, but it did it’s job in delivering the tone of the movie.

Now the individual deaths scene were all good and some more gruesome than the others. Some had twists. Like we are expecting the person to die one way then all of a sudden we see that the real kill is caused by the first part. Like it was Death playing the Mouse Trap game. Building different ways to kill one person. Oh man one of the first character deaths was so bad. The girl was a gymnast and she ends up over shooting her landing and ends up folding herself in half in the most gruesome way to die. Seriously you need to see it. It was just so nasty.

And speaking of Death, to me it was somewhat confirmed that the character of the coroner that Tony Todd plays throughout the series is Death. Also I want to add is a new way the movie handles the survival element. This time the way to save yourself from Death’s bony hands is to kill someone in your place. Essentially taking the victims remaining life.

Now for the ending, which I will spoil here because it made Final Destination Five even better was that twist ending I did not see coming. So the main characters Sam and Molly end up on a plane to go to Paris. So to me I was expecting a homage/nod to the first movie. But no, what we got was a scene of a couple of people getting thrown out of the plane for fighting. We see it through our new characters eyes. But those people getting thrown out look familiar. Yup they were the original characters from the first Final Destination movie. Final Destination 5 takes place right before the first part. The plane then explodes and crashes. Letting us know that regardless Death always gets you in the end.

Final Thoughts:

I was going to brush this off as just another entry to the series. But ended up liking this movie more than part four. Especially with that ending.

Ratings: 3.5 out of 5
