Insidious - Horror Spot DVD Review

By Jose

Plot:

A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

Cast:

Patrick Wilson (Josh Lambert), Rose Byrne (Renai Lambert), Ty Simpkins (Dalton Lambert), Lin Shaye (Elise Rainier), Leigh Whannell (Specs), Angus Sampson (Tucker), Andrew Asher (Foster Lambert), Joseph Bishara ( Red/Back Demon), Philip Friedman (Old Woman)

Review:

Insidious is not a run of the mill horror/ghost movie. Oh no it is something a bit better. It takes on a different twist that I actually have not seen taken in a movie of this kind. Maye I have but I could not remember. So to me at least, Insidious is a bit new.

What I am talking about is explained toward the middle or so of the movie. But to get there we take a traditional ride through a haunting and possible evil spirit.

Josh (Wilson) and Renai (Byrne) think they have it all: a beautiful new home, three lovely children. . . and a gang of unruly ghosts causing torment around them. Unfortunately, after Dalton, one of their sons, is knocked unconscious and falls into a coma, things take a supernatural turn for the worst. To save Dalton, Josh and Renai call on a ghost-hunting team (Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson) and a psychic (Lin Shaye) to investigate the paranormal presence within the house and put a stop to it before their son's soul is lost to "the further."

The Further is the twist I am talking about and the astral plane. An out of body experience. Which the son, Dalton, got from his dad and now is not only stuck but trapped by a red/black demon wanting to take over his body. So his dad, Josh, needs to enter the Further in order to save him. And that is where we get some really creepy stuff coming at us.

The beginning of the movie we get some normal scares. But not normal in a sense that it is not effective, because we do get scared and it is very nerve raking and spooky. Then once in the Further we get this dark, smoky world with spirits and demons. It was really made well and creepy. Made your skin crawl.

The red/black demon takes the cake for one of the scariest things I have seen this year. It’s just this realistic looking demon that was made so well. Then we see it crawling around walls or standing and blending in the dark so when you do finally see it, you freak out. We also get to see what caused Josh problems when he was younger. That scary ass old lady.

Final Thoughts:

For being a PG - 13 horror movie, Insidious is really good. Plenty of scares and jump inducing bumps in the night. The acting was great too. And I like that we got a possible cliffhanger at the end considering we don’t really know if the red/black demon had a chance to slip into Dalton. I say this because that old lady demon took over Josh’s body and ends up killing the Elise.
