#5 On The Best Movies of 2011 list

While I had my doubts on everything Super 8 could have been and what it looks like it was going to be, i'm glad to have been proven wrong. What initially looks like a full on monster flick ends up being a coming of age kind of story. You follow a group of young kids working on a movie, really just having fun with it, when they're shooting near a train track and a oncoming train derails. Something escapes from said train and moves into town and starts terrorizing it. My biggest fear, as was Jose's biggest fear, was that we were not going to see this monster. It cause havoc all across the town, murder thousands (or hundreds cause it seemed like a small town) and you'd never get even a glimpse of it. Luckily, we saw it enough and enjoyed it. Not as menacing in size when compared to the other JJ Abrams monster in Cloverfield, but still large and in charge. A very nice story that really breaks into lots of different small narratives where you learn a little bit about each character.
