Piranha 3D 2010 Movie Review

Piranha 3D 2010 Movie Review
By Jose

Plot:

After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.

Review:

Fisherman Matthew Boyd (Richard Dreyfuss) is fishing in Lake Victoria, AZ when a small earthquake hits, splitting the lake floor and causing a whirlpool. Boyd falls in and is ripped apart by a school of piranhas that emerge from the cave/tunnel. Jake (Steven R. McQueen) is admiring attractive tourists as Spring Break begins. He reunites with his old crush, Kelly (Jessica Szohr) and meets Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell) an eccentric pornographer, as well as Danni (Kelly Brook), one of his actresses. Derrick convinces Jake to show him good spots on the beach for filming a pornographic movie. That night, Jake's mother, Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue), searches for the missing Matthew Boyd with Deputy Fallon (Ving Rhames),who has found Boyd's boat. They find his mutilated body and contemplate closing the beach down. The next morning, a lone cliff diver is attacked and consumed by the hungry fish. Soon after the wave of murderous fish start heading for the buffet of Spring Breakers.

What follows after that is a good amount of boobs, alcohol, and bloody carnage that I was fully not expecting to come off properly. But I was mistaken. Yes Piranha 3D is not going to win awards and may not have made the millions as other summer movies but it did deliver in a fun and blood filled movie. It wasn’t trying to be anything else but that. And it worked. I had a ton of fun with this movie. Did we get some girl on girl underwater full view nudity that lasted longer than it should that was also paired with classical music? Yes we did and it was hilarious. It took you out of the movie for a few minutes right before the horde of piranhas started to attack and boy did they attack.

There were two main action scenes that involved the piranhas, the boat and the Spring Break location in Lake Victoria. On the porn boat the first attack happens that instantly kills one of the porn girls and one camera man. Instantly. Soon we get the mutilation of Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell). And I mean mutilation. The guy obviously deserved it but man having the bottom half of your body eaten while you are still alive was horrible. Then hilarious when we get a 3D rendered penis being munched on by piranhas then spit out at you. Yes I just said that. It wasn’t a typo. The climax of the movie also end on the boat as well. With the sheriff saving her kids off the boat while trying to avoid being eaten. Then blowing up the boat and the majority of the piranhas along with it.

The other and most bloody and carnage filled scene happens in the middle of Spring Break area. It started simple enough with one person getting eaten from the ass up to downright mayhem and death. People getting chunks ripped out of them, limbs chewed off, eaten from the inside out, people climbing over each other to save themselves bloody water and gore. A jock kid tries to save himself with a boat and proceeds to hit and run over other people while saving himself. Which leads to an awful scene where a girls hair gets caught on the blades of the propeller of the motor and while he tries to start the engine the hair and girl get tangled more and more, while she is being attacked by piranhas until the motor fires up and rips the hair and skin completely off her head. Really, rips everything right off. Leaving muscle and her skull to be picked clean by the piranhas.

Final Thoughts:
The only problem I had with the movie is with how they ended it with a “hey there is something worse coming” we get a glimpse of it then credits. It leaves you hanging and wanting a few more minutes. Now for me whenever a movie leaves me wanting to see more and to feel like it should have been longer means it did a great job. Piranha 3D was the surprise movie for the end of summer. Especially when I feel that the last month of the summer movie season had a better amount of movies that I enjoyed in one month then all of summer.

Ratings: 3.5 out of 5
