Easy A Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Emma Stone as Olive
Penn Badgley as Todd
Amanda Bynes as Marianne
Thomas Haden Church as Mr. Griffith

Plot: A highschool girl, Olive, deals with the rumor mill in her school after she unintentionally spreads a lie about herself.

Review: How many times has a story like this actually happened in real life to you? I mean maybe not the exact situation but getting caught in the rumors that seem to spread like wildfire in High School. It happens all the time. Of course, this concept has been thrown into movies before but this one seemed a little more real and much funnier.

Emma Stone is pretty enjoyable in almost everything she does and shows a very good comedy side. She showed a little in Superbad, a little in The House Bunny(if that counts) but you never really saw a full out comedy side. You get a lot of it in Easy A and she definitely provides her fair share of laughs. Still looking for a full out starring role that will "define" her but no rush, it'll come.

If there is anybody, or a couple people, who provided great comedy, it's the parents of Olive. Played by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, they have got to be the funniest pair of parents in any movie. From little witty remarks to demonstrations of the old days(let your mind wander), they provided the more memorable moments of the movie.

The supporting cast is filled with some notable names that include Amanda Bynes, Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow and Alyson Michalka. They provide a solid supporting cast with Bynes surprisingly playing the "villain" of the movie. Though, Thomas Haden Church kind of proved to be a bland character. I don't know if it's because he's just an overall bland actor but he seemed very emotionless and judging by the events that happened to his character, it just didn't look right.
The story is pretty typical, nothing too new and that's good. Keeps it nice and simple, the plot written above pretty much sums it up. I did like the presentation of it all and they way it sort of comes full circle. You start with Emma Stone telling the story on a web cam and by the end you see, it was one of those movies where you start with the end, go back to the start and find your way back to the end and it worked really well here.

Overall, Easy A isn't what most people expected. Some expected a chick flick, some expected this immature high school story. What you got is a solid comedy film, a hint of moral at the end and overall, an enjoyable movie.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
