Weekend Box Office Numbers September 3rd-5th

So the first week removed from the summer season of movies is in the books and it was not a strong one as many could have and probably did predict. An interesting set of movies came out this past weekend which included Machete, The American and Going The Distance. All three had the potential to be pretty strong movies, all offering something different this weekend.

Enough of the extra talk! On to the numbers for this past weekends box office numbers!:
NOTE: These numbers do not include Labor Day.

1. The American- $12.9 Million
2. Takers- $11.5 Million
3. Machete- $11.3 Million
4. The Last Exorcism- $7.6 Million
5. Going The Distance- $6.9 Million
6. The Expendables- $6.6 Million
7. The Other Guys- $5.4 Million
8. Eat Pray Love- $4.9 Million
9. Inception- $4.5 Million
10. Nanny McPhee Returns- $3.6 Million

I would like to think that having a movie in the $20-25 million dollar range for an opening weekend is a solid place for a good movie to be. With that said, no movie reached $13 million this weekend. Unless you count The American which has been out since September 1st made $16.1 Million. Still, this weekend was a bust. I'm a little angered by Takers edging out Machete for the 2nd spot, Machete was a much stronger film than Takers. Expect a review for Machete this week.

As for next week, Resident Evil: Afterlife seems destined to take the top spot next week, at least if that film isn't a total bust. Either way, the slow month of September is under way.
