Crazy Stupid Love Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Steve Carell as Cal
Julianne Moore as Emily
Ryan Gosling as Jacob
Emma Stone as Hannah

Plot: Crazy Stupid Love follows two couples, in two completely different situations. A married couple with their marriage hanging by a thread and a couple with separate problems but together are magical.

Review: Crazy Stupid Love was a movie that i've been looking forward to for a few months now. I'm a sucker for Romantic Comedies, even more so, a sucker for Rom-Coms that bring together big names, great actors. Crazy Stupid Love does just that, bolstering a cast with the likes of Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon.

Beyond the cast though, Crazy Stupid Love also has a supremely simple story that doesn't try to tangle people up but try and get people to relate. Not everyone is going to be relate to it, but that's OK, it's still a great story showing opposite ends of the relationship spectrum.

The relationship between Steve Carell and Julianne Moore is a compelling one to watch. You follow them through their rough time, their divorce and them separately trying to capture happiness on their own. It's very cliche what happens along the way, but you can't say that it doesn't happen like that in life either. I just felt like the movie centers so much on this relationship that sometimes it completely overshadows the Emma Stone/Ryan Gosling relationship.

Speaking of the Stone/Gosling relationship, it's also refreshing to watch. Gosling in the beginning is a playboy who uses lines and the ability to be an asshole to pick up women. He hits on Stone in a bar and gets rejected, but cannot let go of that. Eventually, in a heated moment of passion started by Stone, they end up together. Wish more time was spent on this relationship but a couple of other sub-plots, including the Carell/Moore relationship, got in the way.

I do love how the movie does come full circle towards the end, though I personally saw it coming. It just logically made sense and added a nice depth to the film. Of course, I don't want to give it away, I feel like i've given you guys enough to go on.

Lastly, the 2 cameo type roles from Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon are great. Tomei is a beautiful, though somewhat insane school teacher while Kevin Bacon plays a huge role in the marriage of Carell and Moore. Both do hilarious jobs.

Crazy Stupid Love ends up being better than Friends with Benefits in the Romantic Comedy department, and will probably be the Rom-Com of the year.

Rating: 4 out of 5
