30 Minutes or Less Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Jesse Eisenberg as Nick
Aziz Ansari as Chet
Danny McBride as Dwayne
Nick Swardson as Travis

Plot: A pizza delivery guy is delivering pizza one night when a couple of delinquents kidnap him, strap a bomb to him, and give him an ultimatum. Rob a bank for them or die.

Review: I had called Bridesmaids the funniest movie of the year and said that it wouldn't hold that title for too long based on the number of comedy movies coming out not too long after. After Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher and now 30 Minutes or less being released, we have a new #1 comedy of the year. And it is 30 Minutes or Less.

For me, a good comedy movie is important to not just the movie business, but the world. People need to laugh, it's a part of everyday life and if a movie can provide lots of laughs, then it definitely becomes a bit more meaningful.

30 Minutes or Less doesn't really take itself too seriously while dealing with a life or death situation. Of course, it is a bit predictable but comedy movies aren't really rated so much on story as it is its content. The story made sense, it doesn't try to do too much.

Jesse Eisenberg ends up being a lot funnier than expected in my book. He's always seemed like this very boring kind of guy but with movies like The Social Network and now 30 Minutes or Less, he is slowly cementing himself in Hollywood. Aziz Ansari was another guy who I personally didn't find funny, has completely risen in my book and should really satisfy the crowds overall. There have not been too many duos over the last few years in terms of comedies but these guys deserve honorable mentions.

We also have a villainous pairing with Danny McBride and Nick Swardson, who come off as a threat sometimes and other times as complete goofs. McBride and Swardson are two of the funnier guys around and it shows as they go tit for tat with the protagonist pairing of Eisenberg and Ansari.

Smaller roles delivered by Michael Pena and Fred Ward also add some more comical scenes, making it an all around great comedy. Also, the on screen chemistry between all the actors is great, nothing feels forced, the comedy is natural.

I can't give it the perfect rating as it did not have that presentation of being a "special" comedy but damn, is it the closest thing to it.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5
