The Change Up Review

                                                                By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Ryan Reynolds as Mitch Planko
Jason Bateman as Dave Lockwood
Leslie Mann as Jamie Lockwood
Olivia Wilde as Sabrina McArdle

Plot: A married man and a single playboy get drunk one night and wish that they had the others life. In a miraculous turn of events, they get the others life and must deal with all that the other person was dealing with in life.

Review: I'll be quite honest because it's what we do here at The Movie Spot. I had no intention of giving The Change-Up a chance. Of course, at The Movie Spot what makes us different is, we give every movie a chance. Or we do our best to give every movie a chance. I gave the Change-Up a chance and it faired alright.

It's weird that I wouldn't give a movie that has a cast like The Change-Up a chance. Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde. Both guys are funny guys, both women are ridiculously hot, and even Mann is hilarious. The trailer really threw me off though and didn't come off as funny or raunchy as Change-Up showed it was at times.

The Change-Up has a R rating, that it fully takes advantage of. Nudity, cursing, the whole nine. So with this R rating, the comedy in the movie is allowed to do more than a regular pg-13 comedy.

I would say my biggest problem with the film was the whole body switching part. There is pretty much no explanation as to why they switched bodies. Hell, they were drunk so maybe they never switched bodies. This monument that their bodies switched at, holds absolutely no power over the situation if it's not explained why it happened.

The comedy, though it is there, can get a bit boring and stale at times. There are a couple of parts that will make you laugh out loud, there are times where you'll chuckle and then there's times where you'll just sit there wondering if you were supposed to laugh. I expect more out of guys like Reynolds and Bateman, especially after Bateman ends up being really funny in Horrible Bosses.

Quick note, Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde. Two gorgeous women.

In the end, The Change-Up is nothing more than an R rated Freaky Friday gone wrong. It's not terrible, it's a servicable comedy but it's not the comedy it could have been.

Rating: 3 out of 5

  1. This is a disgusting film that may actually have some people gagging like crazy. It barely avoided getting slapped with an NC-17 rating, so it might be a struggle for some to get past all the envelope-pushing. But as gross as it can sometimes get, we were laughing too darn hard at it all to really pay that any mind. Nice Review! Check out mine when you can!

  2. Really? I mean the opening scene may have some people gagging, but I can't recall any other scene that would cause anybody to gag.
