Summer Review

By: Robert Acosta

It is now September, and though technically we are still in Summer, do you really consider September to be summer month? Leaves will be changing soon, weather will be getting nice and brisk and soon, wearing shorts will make our legs cold. So let's look at the movies that came out this Summer.

Now, I want you to bare with me because the range of which these movies came out on are going to be a little funny. I'm gonna refer to some movies from May and even one from April as a Summer movie hit. Now, yes I understand April and May are not Summer months but these movies made it feel like so.

Fast Five, released at the end of April, was one of those high adrenaline movies featuring a cast of...well....everyone from the past Fast and Furious movies. It was meant to be this extravagant movie with lots going for it, and it worked all around.

May brought in some great movies and one franchise movie that didn't do so well. Thor came out and started off what has been a great year for Marvel, Bridesmaids somewhat surprised me by being genuinely funny and Kung Fu Panda II may have stolen the show for me, bringing a darker, much more thought out movie for kids. On the other hand, Pirates of the Caribbean didn't fare so well in anyone's book really. It had too much going on and was really missing that "flair" that it once had.

It started to heat up in June and a lot of the more anticipated movies began to release. Hangover Part II, though somewhat played out, was still a very funny sequel, X-Men First Class brought integrity back to the X-Men movie franchise, Super 8 was an overall success, Bad Teacher was a solid comedy, though something I may have over hyped a bit and Transformers: Dark of the Moon also revitalized its name. The big shame of the month, and really to almost no ones surprise, belongs to Green Lantern. The production as a whole really botched this one, messing up parts of the story, messing up the villain(s) and even mis-casting its Green Lantern.

July was no slouch either, represented by the final Harry Potter movie, a real all action flick that will satisfy all fans and Captain America, the last Marvel Avenger movie before the Avengers and a solid way to jump into the future. Movies like Crazy Stupid Love and Friends with Benefits, although both very solid, likable films, may get better with more viewings in the future. Can't forget about Winnie the Pooh either. Honorable mention for pulling off the essential way to pull of a adaption of a kids legend.

August has been a rather slow month, not pulling out too much. Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 30 Minutes or Less were probably the only hits among the group of movies, while movies like The Change Up, Colombiana and Grave Encounters were all solid, but missed something to make it special.

With all that said, here are my top 5 movies of this Summer:

5. Winnie the Pooh
4. X-Men First Class
3. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2
2. Captain America
1. 30 Minutes or Less
