Fantasy Spot: Super Mario Bros

By: Robert Acosta

The year is 1993 and everyone is awaiting the Super Mario Bros movie. Yeah, that's right, the iconic overall wearing plumber is getting his own movie. Bob Hoskins was to play Mario, coming off movies like Hook and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, he seemed to be the clear cut choice. Playing Luigi, young John Leguizamo. All seemed to be in place for a good movie. So, what went wrong? Well...what didn't?

Looking back, almost 20 years later, is there a way to make a Super Mario Bros movie right? Well, maybe.

Looking at the cast I would put together, you may laugh at the connection some of them have but here is how I would cast a Mario Bros movie:

Robert Downey Jr. as Mario
Jude Law as Luigi
Rachel McAdams as Peach
Nina Dobrev as Daisy
Michael Clarke Duncan as Bowser

Now you may thinking to yourself: "Did he just take most of the main cast of Sherlock Holmes and put them in a Mario movie?" Yup, I did.

And for me, it works. They already have a good chemistry together, which is important seeing as how Mario and Luigi are brothers and you should feel that and see that. So, who better to have than Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, who through some minor physical changes, could pull off the parts of Mario and Luigi. Rachel McAdams would be the perfect Peach, literally. Dye her hair back to her natural blonde and it is the mirror image of Peach, I think.

For the non Sherlock Holmers I put in the cast, Nina Dobrev would be a great Daisy. Very much like the other picks, put her in some kind of Daisy attire and you've got Daisy. As for Bowser, his voice is sinister, deep. Duncan can play that voice, though he's not the only one, I figure he was the best pick.

I don't have a story off the top of my head. Could the movie loosely follow the game? Sure, tweak it here and there, and you won't have to really go too far from making a complete adaptation of the classic game(s).
