Cast:

Natalie Portman as Jane Foster

Anthony Hopkins as Odin

Plot: Thor, a majestic and mighty warrior has been cast out of his own realm of Asgard, abandoned on Earth. He must find a way to get back home to stop his power driven brother, Loki.

Review: I can't measure my excitement for Thor. The last few weeks, it's what i've pretty much been waiting for. Thor signifies a lot of things. Possibly the official start to an early summer movie season, though Fast Five's performance at the box office last week may test my logic, and the Marvel movie season has started. Of course, it'll also end right after June 3rd when the last of 3 Marvel films hits.

I had a feeling Thor would be good, not this good though. Is it the best Marvel film to date? No. And that's mostly because the Marvel world, even in film, is so vast. You have Spider-Man 1 and 2, X-Men 1 and 2, and Iron Man. Those are just the Marvel films I considered to be really good and great. Thor is in that category.

The acting is very good. A good mix of very talented actors in Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba with young, relatively unknown actors in Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. The casting was on point. Hemsworth as Thor is very convincing, a part that he clearly makes his own. He shows he can pull off action scenes, and even harder, pull of some comedy throughout the film. Hiddleston as Loki is just as sharp. The idea behind comic book characters coming to life is that they have to be convincing, you have to feel like Hemsworth IS Thor and Hiddleston IS Loki. They did just that.

The story is pretty straight forward, even for the non comic book reader. It helps to know the backstory to the characters, but the filmmakers did a good job of telling a story everyone can understand. It's as straight forward as I stated it in the plot above. Which is good, comic book adaptations can get really messy with a "complicated" storyline. EX: Spider-Man 3 and X-Men: The Last Stand.

The action is very good, it's sprinkled throughout the movie. Some in the beginning, a good chunk in the middle, and some in the end. My only gripe is the ending battle between the two main characters. It felt too short, even a bit unsatisfying. Now I know, The Avengers is coming soon and an even bigger, better battle is ahead but for this movie, I wanted more.

All in all, Thor is great way to kick off the summer movie season. Great action, good comedy, cameos that I will not spoil but will enhance the film overall. Also, if you are a fan of Marvel, if you plan on seeing The Avengers next year, stay for the credits. Marvels trademark after credits scene is still in effect and it's worth waiting for.

Rating: 4 out of 5
