May Monthly Movie Releases- Acosta Edition

By: Robert Acosta

So this month we went with something a little different. Due to some technical difficulties, me and Mr. Diaz has separate monthly movie posts for this month. Not to fear, they're still just as good as in months past.

So let me list out what movies come out this month:

May 6th
  • Thor
  • Something Borrowed
  • Jumping the Broom
  • The Beaver (x)
  • Last Night (x)
  • Hobo With a Shotgun (x)
  • Passion Play (x)
May 13th
  • Priest
  • Bridesmaids
  • Hesher (x)
  • Everything Must Go (x)
  • Go For It (x)
  • Skateland (x)
May 20th
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
  • Midnight in Paris (x)
May 27th
  • The Hangover Part II
  • Kung Fu Panda 2
  • The Tree of Life (x)

So, I personally feel like this is a really strong month. On paper, it doesn't look tremendous but it looks to be a great one. With Fast Five last weekend raking in over $83 million dollars, it kind of feels like the summer movie season is here right? Not entirely, but damn are we close.

The first week features a highly awaited movie in Thor, the god of Thunder himself. Countless previews, countless TV spots, countless pictures and we are less than a week away from Thor. It looks like it's going to be the blockbuster that has so far been hyped to be. And in case you can't see Thor, and why the hell wouldn't you be able to anyway, try and catch Hobo with a Shotgun. That looks to be insanely funny and awesome.

2nd week features some iffy movies that could prove to do well with the audiences. Priest has left me with a very undecided feeling after every trailer. Could kick ass and be very entertaining. On the other hand, does it really bring anything new to the table? Bridesmaids is another iffy movie. Could be funny, it has 2 very funny SNL ladies that on any given day deliver side splitting laughs. Does Bridesmaids provide that though? Not too sure.

I'm a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Each film has had a nice blend of action and comedy in it, mixed in with a decent story. The next film in the series will try to go on without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, pretty much leaving things in the hands of Mr. Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp. He's a big star and has proven to be able to take things to the next level, but can he do this by himself?

And finally, maybe the strongest week of the month, the last week of May. You wanna talk about a doubleheader? This may be as good as it gets. The Hangover part II and Kung Fu Panda 2. Now, I have a small gripe with Hangover II. After watching the trailer, it looks like the exact same formula as the first film. Someone is lost, the gang has to find the person, they get drunk, they wake up with an animal in their room. But if they deliver as many laughs as they did for the original, then all is forgotten. I haven't seen a whole lot of Kung Fu Panda 2, but same formula applies here. If it can provide most of what the original provided, then things will be OK.

Summer movie season. Almost here. May looks to be a great preview for even better things to come.
