The Spot News: Comic-Con 2011 Wolverine VS Silver Samurai

During an appearance today at Comic-Con International to promote his robot-boxing movie Real Steel, star Hugh Jackman confirmed: “I’ll fight the Silver Samurai in it so that should be exciting. Most of the filming will take place in Japan.”

That will come as no surprise to anyone who’s read the 1982 Wolverine miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller on which the screenplay is based. In the comic, Logan battles ninjas and the politics of the Tokyo criminal underworld for the heart of his ex-lover Mariko Yashida, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord. The towering, armor-clad Silver Samurai is Mariko’s half-brother, a mutant with the ability to generate a tachyon energy field from within his body — and typically focused through his sword.

With 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold now at the helm, replacing Darren Aronofsky, The Wolverine is set to begin production in October. Jackman suggested last month that the movie will be targeted for a fall 2012 release.
