Attack The Block Movie Review

Attack The Block Review

By Jose

Plot:

Attack the Block is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It’s inner city versus outer space.

Main Cast:

Jodie Whittaker (Sam), Luke Treadaway (Brewis), Nick Frost (Ron), John Boyega (Moses), Alex Esmail (Pest) , Franz Drameh (Dennis), Leeon Jones (Jerome), Simon Howard (Biggz), Jumayn Hunter (Hi-Hatz)

Review:
Attack The Block surprised the crap out of me. I went in expecting a mediocre or somewhat enjoyable movie. Something to kill the time. But I got a great and fun experience. Plain and simple, Attack The Block is great. Right now , in my opinion, Attack The Block was better than Super 8. The cast was wonderful, the creatures were awesome, and the overall story was again, great. The story is simple and to the point.

The cast or the main cast of kids are not your normal run of the mill movie teens. They are the bad guys. The hooligans and trouble makers. The trash of the neighborhood. And at start of the film they make you hate them right off the bat when they mug Sam (Joide Whittaker). But as we take their journey with them; we grow to like them, cheer them on, and root for them to survive and make it through to the end. From being hated to being the heroes. Moses and his crew stood out and were all unique enough that you wanted see what they would do next or say next. Especially what they say because there are plenty of hilarious moments and interactions between them and with the other characters. We also get some great and funny moments and characters with Brewis (Treadaway), Ron (Frost), and Hi-Hatz (Hunter). Seriously you end up liking in some way or another each and every character.

Now let me get into the aliens. I loved them. It was a cool and simple design that worked and I liked. The aliens are all black, furry monsters that have this bear wolf like shape to them and they have eerie green glowing teeth. The all black “gorilla/bear/orangutan/wolf” beasts. When we fist see the larger versions we are treated to a dark furry shape with glowing green eyes. Yet those eyes end up being two fangs that hang out of a huge multi-rowed fanged mouth. And it is awesome. The smaller one at the very beginning looks like a gray bald monkey with fangs and claws. The ending scene is so tense and nerve raking. As we see Moses run out into a room full of the beasts and then chased down. The scene is in slow motion and those things are so close to him biting at his heels. And all you can do is say “go, go, oh shit they are right behind you, hurry”. Great scene.

There is a fair amount of gore with necks being ripped out, heads bitten into and then ripped off, and a leg bitten and then crushed. But there is nothing too gruesome.

Final Thoughts:

Attack The Block is a must see. Try to get out there and catch it if it is playing in your area. If not go online, face book or twitter, and demand to get it shown near you. You will not regret it.
