The Spot News: Weekend Box Office Numbers

With the start of every weekend comes a couple of new movies looking to impress audiences and even more so, make money. At the end of every weekend, the numbers are all processed and put out there so that new movies can see what they made over the weekend and older movies can see if they're still making anything. You know the drill. Here are the box office numbers from the weekend of August 13 to August 15:

1. The Expendables- $35 Million
2. Eat, Pray, Love- $23.7 Million
3. The Other Guys-$18 Million
4. Inception-$11 Million
5. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World-$10.5 Million
6. Despicable Me-$6.8 Million
7. Step Up 3D- $6.6 Million
8. Salt-$6.4 Million
9. Dinner For Schmucks-$6.3 Million
10. Cats and Dogs-$ 4.1 Million

It's not surprising that The Expendables is at number one this week and completely demolished Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World at the box office. I loved both movies(expect reviews for both this week) but it was pretty obvious that people were going to see the high action movie over comic book like action movie.

What does annoy me a bit is how poorly Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World did. The rumored budget for the movie is anywhere between $60-$90 million dollars. So $10.5 million in the opening weekend isn't good. At all. Lets hope for good DVD sales!

I'm glad movies like Inception and Despicable Me are both still making money, definitely great movies that deserve it.

As for next week, maybe even the week after that, the box office numbers may look strikingly similar. With movies like Piranha 3D, Vampires Suck, Nanny McPhee Returns among other busts, the movies in the top 10 now, should be making money for a couple more weeks.
