The Other Guys Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Will Ferrell as Allen Gamble
Mark Wahlberg as Terry Hoitz
Eva Mendes as Sheila Gamble
Steve Coogan as David Ershon

Plot: Two cops who are very much unlike each other, are paired together and try to step up and become the best cops in town.

Review: I mentioned in the plot above this that the two cops(played by Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) were very unlike each other and an odd pairing. How about the actual pairing of Ferrell and Wahlberg? Most people would think this wouldn't work in a comedy movie or in an action movie. Yet, it works on almost both accounts.

I never like movies that all the action or all the comedy in the trailer. It becomes a huge waste of time when you go to see the movie and realize that the best parts of the movie were in the trailer. That has been happening recently with a few movies like The Last Airbender, I Love You Beth Cooper and many more. The Other Guys does exactly what movies should do. Show you some funny parts of the movie in the trailer but leave the best for the actual movie.

On that note, the comedy in the The Other Guys is great. There are those quick subtle moments that are random and make you laugh to those long, stretched out jokes that are even funnier. Mark Wahlberg is actually pretty damn funny, which is unusual to say. We've seen him in all these dramatic, action type movies but he really shows that he's got a funny side. Hell, he may have been funnier than Will Ferrell in the movie. I say that because you expect Ferrell to be funny, not Wahlberg.

There is some action involved in the movie though not much. This is primarily a comedy movie with hints of action and even the action is funny. It pokes fun at some of the cliches of action movies and action scenes that always seems to happen. So don't get too excited about any over the top action.

Beyond Ferrell and Wahlberg, the cast is pretty damn good and a little stacked. The gorgeous(and that is an understatement) Eva Mendes is in the movie and definitely creates some of the more hilarious scenes in the movie along with Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Rob Riggle, Damon Wayans Jr. and small but still funny cameos from Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock. It's filled with people who are funny and people you wouldn't expect to be funny.

Overall, The Other Guys is the best comedy of the year for me. It hasn't been a huge year for comedies but it has been solid with movies like MacGruber and Hot Tub Time Machine. The Other Guys blew those movies out though with great, hilarious comedy.

Overall: 4.5 Out of 5
