August Releases/Summer winding down

With August comes a lot of things. The final month of the summer, the hottest month of the summer(usually) and the end of the summer movie season. Has it been a good one? Ehh not really. Inception and Despicable Me made the summer movie season better but there have been a lot of dissapointing movies. Nonetheless, something else that comes with this August is a little ray of hope. Robert Acosta: July was a solid month, bringing movies like Inception and Despicable Me to the screen along with Charlie St. Cloud and Dinner for Schmucks, which im sure were fine movies. July definitely redeemed June but maybe not the whole summer movie season as a whole.

With that said, I have big hope for August. It starts with a solid first week mixed with 3 interesting movies. The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg looks pretty funny and I love the TV spots they've put on in the last month. I'm a good fan of Step Up, really enjoyed the first two heavily so automatically i'm excited for the 3D movie. The dance moves were already awesome in the prior movies, throw in 3D to a movie that actually would be good for 3D and we could have something here. Lastly, The Middle Men looks like an interesting film starring Luke Wilson and basically deals with the subject of porn and the internet. Sold yet?

The 2nd week of August packs a nice punch of action. Bringing the highly anticipated The Expendables to the big screen in all it's explosive glory. Do I really need to mention the cast? Just look up the best action stars of the last 20 years minus Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Scott Pilgrim vs The World also looks like it's going to be a nice breakout hit with great comic book like action and a good story to back it up.

Then we go into the final two weeks of August and things seem to slow down a bit. Piranha 3D sure looks like it's gonna suck but looks like a cheesy good time at theaters. I'm being very humble when I say that. Vampires Suck sounds like a funny idea and a good way to shut up those damn Twilight Fans..I hope. Other than that, Takers seems like an alright movie that packs a bunch of solid B list actors together. It wants to be a good action movie and i'm sure it will be but by the time Takers is out, The Expendables will be out already for two weeks and show everyone what a real action movie should be.

Jose Diaz: So here we are in the final month of Summer, August. Known for it’s back-to-school sales, the start of college season, and “dump month”. What is that you ask? Well August is the month in where all the non-blockbuster movie get put in. Movies that studios have left over that they worried will not be money makers. So the studios “dump” them in this month to try to get something out of it. But the thing is sometimes we get some good movies that would have been lost in the shuffle otherwise. Thankfully this year we have a couple of winners.

First week we get a third and 3D entry of the Step Up series that showcases some great dancing. I actually want to check this one out considering the producer is one of the guys from So You Think You Can Dance show along with many of previous talents of said show. Also The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg. I am not too sure about this one but most likely will end up watching it. The following week though two of my must see movies come out. The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim VS The World.

The Expendables stars a good chunk of the top action stars of the 80’s and 90’s along with some wrestling and MMA talent. The movie is just going to be an action packed homage to the great action movies of those times and I can not wait to see this. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter.

Then we have Scott Pilgrim VS The World. I’m not sure how to say what a bad ass movie this is going to turn out to be. Based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Pilgrim (Michael Cera) a bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. I can’t wait to see this! It’s going to be so much fun.

Vampire’s Suck will do just that. Especially since you can actually find and see this online. Hopefully this would be that last of these dumb waste of money movies. You want to see these type of movies done right? Go watch the first couple of Scary Movies and skip this shit. The rest of the month is filled with random movies that will be forgotten as soon as they are released.

Finally a guilty pleasure of mine in Piranha 3D a remake of the classic cheesy horror movie done by Alexandre Aja. Will it be good? Most likely not. Will it be fun? Yes Will it have 3D swimsuit clad girls getting eaten by monster piranhas? Hell yes!
