Weekend Box Office Numbers November 26th-28th

By: Robert Acosta

In the last week of November, it's expected that a few movies are going to come out. Most of the time they aren't too good but i'm sure these movies this week had their ups and downs. Though I still think that Faster should be mostly avoided.

Let's check out this past Thanksgiving weekends box office numbers:

  1. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1   $50.3 Million
  2. Tangled   $49.1 Million
  3. Megamind   $12.9 Million
  4. Burlesque   $11.8 Million
  5. Unstoppable   $11.7 Million
  6. Love and Other Drugs   $9.9 Million
  7. Faster   $8.7 Million
  8. Due Date   $7.3 Million
  9. The Next Three Days   $4.8 Million
  10. Morning Glory   $4 Million
I'm not at all surprised that Harry Potter took the top spot again. What does surprise me is that it barely got by Tangled. I believe Tangled was in 3D, so it definitely got that high due to the 3D pricing. Nonetheless, $49 Million is still a lot, even with the 3D inflation.

Love and Other Drugs has been disappointing in the box office, which sucks because that is one of the better movies of this year. Though, i'm sure this movie didn't cost all that much to make and hopefully, they break even and profit.

Next week is shaping up to be the same as this week, maybe some flip flopping. But for the most part, I don't see the top 10 changing.

The Spot News: Leslie Nielsen Has Passed Away

The Spot News: Leslie Nielsen Has Passed Away At The Age Of 84
by Jose

A sad day in the world of comedy as NAKED GUN, AIRPLANE! and "Police Squad" star Leslie Nielsen died yesterday at 84 years old of complications from pneumonia. His family released a statement saying: "We are sadden by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television."

It's true that despite a late-career flourish in comedy, Nielsen was actually cast in AIRPLANE! because of his history as a serious character actor. Nielsen played the role straight and got many of the funniest and most memorable lines in the movie ("I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.")

The Spot News: The Dark Knight Rises= Bale's Swan Song?

By: Robert Acosta

I know, 2012 is still a long ways away but it can't hurt to talk about what is probably going to be the event of that year now right?

The Dark Knight Rises will start shooting mid next year and to be released in the Summer movie season of 2012. All that we know. Though lots of details are still forthcoming about the film, Christian Bale, Mr. Batman himself, said that this could very well be his last hurrah as Batman.

In an Interview with Total Film, Bale states that he feels The Dark Knight Rises will be the last time him AND Christopher Nolan, the director, be a part of a Batman film. Of course he also goes on to indicate that maybe if Nolan were to come back for a fourth Batman film, that he would love still be involved.

Is any of this saying much? I'm not sure yet. They haven't even started shooting this film yet and they're already talking beyond The Dark Knight Rises. We'll see how TDKR does, both critically and financially. Eventually one or both of them have to move on from this franchise, could it be coming sooner rather than later?

The Spot News: Stephen King talks 10 best movies of the year

By: Robert Acosta

The year is winding down so it's normal to have top movies in mind, which ones you liked, which ones you hated, so on and so forth. Every now and then you hear about a celebrity talk about their favorite movies of the year and things get a bit interesting.

Normally, I could care less about what celebrities think about movies. Even actors themselves tend to mention movies that only they're in or critically acclaimed movies. Not that there is too much wrong with that, but I like to mention all the movies, no discrimination.

When I hear Stephen King talk about top 10 movies of the year though, I get interested. King is obviously accredited with writing some insanely scary stories that get made into just as scary films. Films such as Carrie, It, The Shining, Cujo, just to name a few. So here it is, Stephen King's top 10 movies of this year:

  1. Let Me In
  2. The Town
  3. Inception
  4. The Social Network
  5. Takers
  6. Kick-Ass
  7. Splice
  8. Monsters
  9. Jackass 3D
  10. Green Zone
This is probably one of the more interesting top 10 movie lists you'll find this year. He has a mix of legit great movies that are going to be on most peoples list, movies that might be on a few lists and movies that won't be on anyones list.

Green Zone at #10 is a bit surprising. It was a decent effort, trying to show politics and all its wrongs but it wasn't nearly as great to merit a top 10 spot. Jackass 3D at #9 is another shocker. Though I enjoyed the hell out of it, and most people seemed to as well, it really doesn't belong on a list like this.

As noted by others, Takers at #5 is the most interesting choice. Though a good amount of people enjoyed Takers, I don't think it was taken seriously enough to be in the top 10.

We at The Movie Spot are going to have our own top 10 movies list for 2010 in mid-late December along with some of the better movies in all genres of movies. Not because Stephen King influenced this or anything, we just like making lists.

Your daily Superman news is in

By: Robert Acosta

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving, I know I did. But, back to work i am!

So for the daily Superman news item we have Matthew Goode as the rumored front runner for the Clark Kent/Superman role. According to both Joblo.com and Movie Newz "Snyder wants Matthew Goode to play mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and has plans to rely heavily on CGI for The Man of Steel." Snyder in the quote above is referring to the director of Superman: Man of Steel, Zack Snyder.

Matthew Goode and director Snyder have a small history together through the movie Watchmen that Snyder directed and Goode played Ozymandias. So could this rumor be real? Very much so. Do I think it's real? I'm not so sure.

The public is really pushing for Jon Hamm to get this role and I have to say i've jumped on that bandwagon. Looking at him more and more, I only see him being more suited for the role. Goode on the other hand isn't a horrible choice, but the fact that they would CGI him to look bigger doesn't have me enthused. The CGI on Green Lantern looks shotty to me, so i'm not so high on the CGI effect.

I'm sure we'll be finding out soon how true or fictional this news really is.

The Spot News: From Love and Drugs To Man Of Steel?

Anne Hathaway To Play Lois Lane?

What’s Playing today claimed that the film’s action would take place in West Africa amongst warring tribes. In the same article, they also dropped the name of Anne Hathaway as a possible candidate for Lois Lane.

I really do not mind this at all. But I did like the rumors of Hathaway being in the new Batman film better. What worries me about all this is the supposed filming location in West Africa. What the hell does that have to do with Superman? I don't follow Superman comics at all but I do keep up with what basically goes on with the character and I don't remember if he has done any really important thing there. Unless the source is making things up who knows.

The Spot News: First Image Shows How Dirty Sherlock Holmes Really Is

The First Official Sherlock Holmes 2

Not much to say about one action picture. Three dirty people running away from a dirt explosion.

The Spot News: Apollo 18 Poster

Apollo 18 Poster

Here is a poster for the found-footage moon monster film, Apollo 18

Looks interesting enough. It's supposed to be a found footage movie similar to Paranormal Activity, but with what really happened on the moon. So instead of ghosts we get aliens. I wonder how they will handle the sound. Due to not being able to hear in space and everything. I mean just thinking about it makes the movie seem very creepy.

A Glimpse Into The Future

A Glimpse Into The Future
by Jose

The 2010 Summer movie season sucked.

Ok it wasn't that bad. We did get some great movies and some surprise hits. But it really did not feel like a blockbuster like some Summers before.
I had read an article earlier in the month about Cowboys and Aliens and the director, John Favreau, and the studio had a hard time figuring out a decent release date for next year all due to the amout of movies being released at around the same time. So I decided to take a look myself and found that it was true. Next Summer we will have a good amount of "blockbuster" type movies being released within a three month time (Summer Movie Season). So here is what to expect so far for next year.

May
Priest
Pirates Of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides
Thor
The Hangover 2
Kung Fu Panda 2

June
X-Men: First Class
Green Lantern
Cars 2
Rise Of The Apes

July
Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon
Winnie The Pooh
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2
Captain America
Cowboys and Aliens

Faster Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Dwayne (who the fuck am I kidding) "THE ROCK" Johnson as Driver
Billy Bob Thornton as Cop
Carla Gugino as Cicero
Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Killer

Plot: An ex-con goes on a killing spree, seeking revenge for his troubled brother.

Review: Finally, The Rock(And yes I know that legally is not a part of his name anymore, but I refuse to call him anything else) has come back to action movies! Is it a good return? Well let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

The movie starts out with The Rock, in jail, getting out of jail and with no hesitation, on the hunt for the men who killed his brother. One by one, he picks off all the people involved in very gruesome but mostly similar ways. You got guns, knifes, ice picks and an OK car chase, but nothing special.

Like is the problem with most action movies, logic seems to go out the window. Police, for some reason, seem to get more forgetful and lose all their training. And that, like all those other action movies, is where this movie falls flat on its face.

The action is there, and it's both good and amusing. But damn, people are just stupid in this movie. How cops could never actually catch The Rock, how the cops don't even know or bother to check if someone on the inside has anything to do with this whole situation. Cause that plot seems to happen more often than not nowadays.

The acting is a bit loose, on almost all ends. Billy Bob Thornton is a real veteran so his performance is passable but even has these awkward moments.

I know, action movies like this always end up failing just because they're so comical. Comical in a bad way, in a way where the movie should not be funny. Taking it a little more seriously, a little more effort could have really helped this movie.

Even though i'm happy The Rock made a return to action movies, I wish effort was put in and time was devoted to making this movie actually enjoyable. For this Thanksgiving weekend, avoid this at all costs and go check out Love & Other Drugs.

DVD Releases November 23rd

By: Robert Acosta

I can't mention this enough but...Thanksgiving. YES.

With Thanksgiving comes the day after sales, aptly called Black Friday. So this edition of the DVD release post will feature some Black Friday deals that I know of, just for you.

But first, we start with the DVD releases for this week:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • The Expendables
  • Eat Pray Love
  • I'm Still Here
  • Flipped
  • Countdown to Zero
  • Madea Goes to Jail (Only On Blu-Ray)
  • Diary of a Mad Black Woman (Only on Blu-Ray)
  • Beauty and The Beast (2 Disc, limited time only)
  • 7th Heaven (Series)
  • Batman Beyond (Complete Series; Limited Edition)
  • The Tudors (series)
So there is a lot to grab this week. The Expendables is a great pick up if you're looking for an entertaining, action film to watch. Even with the whole family, it works.

I'm Still Here is an extremely weird movie. Because it's real? Because it's fake? It's hard to tell. I've heard it has it moments, I hear Joaquin Phoenix puts in a performance of a lifetime. I also hear it's just shit. So you really roll the dice on this DVD.

Let's talk about the Black Friday sales.

Best Buy will have The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Blu-Ray for $10 as well as having the 2010 version of Predators Blu-Ray and DVD for the same price. Saving Private Ryan will also be $10 on Blu-Ray. Lastly at Best Buy, all Smallville DVDs are $10. From Season 1-9, all $10 each. That's all I have for now, but as details come out in the next day or so, you'll know everything you need to know for this Friday.

Weekend Box Office Numbers November 19th- November 21st

By: Robert Acosta

I knew this was coming. The weekend where Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 would take over the box office. I just didn't think it would be this tremendous! Damn! To the numbers!:

  1. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1   $125 Million
  2. Megamind   $16 Million
  3. Unstoppable   $13.1 Million
  4. Due Date   $9.2 Million
  5. The Next Three Days   $6.8 Million
  6. Morning Glory   $5.2 Million
  7. Skyline   $3.4 Million
  8. Red   $2.5 Million
  9. For Colored Girls   $2.4 Million
  10. Fair Game   $1.5 Million
That has to be the biggest deficit between the top spot and runner up for weekend box office numbers I've ever seen.

It's well deserved money too cause HP 7 delivered with a great, dramatic movie. The action isn't fully there, but it's not supposed to be.

Is there really any worth in mentioning 2-9? Ehh sort of.

Megamind grabs the 2nd spot, though I still say most of that comes from the 3D ticket pricing.

The Next Three Days is still failing at the box office, which is weird because it looks like such a great thriller than I don't see why it has failed.

Next week is Thanksgiving and they're are movies galore to catch at the theater this week. Three movies will be released into wide release, all being released on Wednesday. Love & Other Drugs(A must see), Faster(Ehh) and Burlesque(Really?).

The Spot News: Potter Films to 3D

All Harry Potter Films Will Be Released In 3D

We all knew this was coming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: Eventually, all of the Potter pics will be converted to 3D for limited theatrical re-release and a big push in the Blu-ray Disc home-entertainment format.

I mean it makes sense to release Deathly Hallows Part 1 in 3D before PArt 2 is release next summer. They did have it almost ready to go and worked rather hard to make it 3D in the first place. I am just wondering how they will release all films, in 3D, before DH Part 2. Like one movie a month in theaters? I would just release the films in Blu-Ray 3D one a month before the final movie and a month before re-release DH Part 1 in 3D.

The Spot News: Locke And Key Might Have It's Nina

Miranda Otto To Play Nina In Locke And Key

Deadline are reporting than Miranda Otto is “set” to appear in the upcoming Locke and Key TV show as Nina Locke, the mother with three kids and a creepy old house. Whether or not this “set” means she has actually signed on remains to be seen. According to their story she turned down other pilots to take this one, including Perception, which sounds like a cross between House and The Mentalist.

If Miranda Otto looks familiar it is because she played Eowyn in the Lord of the Rings movies.

With this casting news I wonder if we will be hearing and seeing the main characters cast soon.

The Spot News: Locke And Key Gets A Director

Mark Romanek In Negotiations To Direct Locke & Key

Deadline now report that Mark Romanek is negotiating to take the director’s reins. This would be Romanek’s first TV show, though he has a long resume of commercials and music videos that were designed with the small screen in mind.
Romanek is well known for his very striking imagery which should work well to bring Locke and Key to life the way it should be.

First Impressions: Green Lantern Trailer

By: Robert Acosta

I told you i'd be back to talk about Green Lantern.

So, the first Green Lantern trailer hit this past week and The Movie Spot had it for you just a few days back. You can watch it again in this post, right at the beginning of it.

I'll be honest, i'm more of a Marvel Comics fan, not DC. When it comes to me, I only the heavy heavy hitters of DC. You know, the Batmans and Supermans. But, DC is trailing Marvel films by a lot. Marvel has done an alright job putting together their films. By my count, they have 2 good Spider-Man films, 2 good X-Men films, 2 good Iron Man films, a good Hulk movie, a couple of fair Punisher movies, and some OK attempts at Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider. DC has a great pair of Batman films, a not so bad Superman film and....and...um...that's it.

Now with Green Lantern coming, DC looks to cut the lead that Marvel has on them.

My first impression of Green Lantern is along the lines of ehhhh. I'm sure that gesture is familiar to people these days as it is used to describe sub-par efforts.

The costume that is CGI on Green Lantern, played by Ryan Reynolds, doesn't look all too good. I actually find it to look kind of silly. The story looks a bit intriguing, though i'm not too accustomed with the story of Green Lantern. The beautiful Blake Lively is in it, seemingly playing Lantern's love interest and she's always good to have. Some of the effects look pretty good, especially that punch of green light that Reynolds uses, that looked cool.

I'm not overly impressed with Green Lantern just yet. As much as I love Ryan Reynolds, he's a phenomenal actor who is always entertaining, but I still don't think this was the role for him. My personal pick would have been Bradley Cooper, from The Hangover, cause I think he's made more for action type films and has the action ability to do the serious, action-comedy style.

There is still a lot of time between now and the release of the film so maybe I can find something to be impressed with. Though I don't want to find something to be impressed by, I want to naturally be impressed.

First Impressions: Your Highness Trailer

By: Robert Acosta

The other day we at The Movie Spot gave you a couple of trailers to sit with and watch for movies coming out next year. One of those was the highly awaited Green Lantern and the other was a movie by the name of Your Highness.

I'm sure you want me to talk about Green Lantern but that'll be after this post, I promise. For now, let's talk about Your Highness.

As IMDB states it, the plot goes something like this "A fantasy movie about an arrogant, lazy prince and his more heroic brother who must complete a quest in order to save their father's kingdom."

So at first, just by reading the plot, it doesn't sound all too funny. I haven't talked about the cast yet, that's why.

We have the top notch funny Danny McBride, the versatile James Franco, the mix of beauty and comedy in both Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel.

Now the trailer is the red band trailer, so it's the better, no holds barred trailer. Cursing galore, bare naked asses, the whole nine yards. The trailer itself has its moments, though I think that the funniest parts are yet to be seen. I'm 100% that McBride and Franco are capable of a extremely hilarious movie and that this was merely just a sneak peek. Though, they look like they've got chemistry, which doesn't surprise me because of their good chemistry in Pineapple Express. Of course, the director from Pineapple Express and Eastbound & Down, a show that McBride is on, is directing this film. So there is a good level of familiarity that could make this film extremely fun to watch.

Only time will tell though, the movie is to be released sometime on 2011, i'm hearing April right now.

The Spot News: 13 Trailer

By: Robert Acosta

Jason Statham, action movies just go together so well.

Though Statham doesn't like the main main character, he is featured. As it stands the movie is about "a man assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men."

The movie is to be released in 2011.

The Spot News: Here is how you wrap up 2 previous stories

By: Robert Acosta

By adding a post that talks about both Batman and Superman! That's diabolical!

Well it's just a small tidbit so don't expect much.

Both movies will start filming next spring with The Dark Knight Rises shooting in June and Superman filming in May.

Both are slated for a Summer 2012 release, which hopefully makes it one hell of a Summer movie season.

The Spot News: Wanted: New Superman

By: Robert Acosta

With the new Superman film finally getting underway, more details will start to leak out. Including who will play Superman for the next film.

I personally thought Brandon Routh was great as Superman and what a waste it was that he, apparently, cannot return as Superman. Didn't see much wrong with his performance, and he seemed very dedicated to the role.

Unfortunately, what I say has no weight as to who will be playing Superman next. I can tell you who is in the running:

  • Armie Hammer
  • Joe Manganiello
  • Ian Somerhalder
  • Jon Hamm
Never heard of most of those names? Don't be worried, that's exactly what the studio is looking for. According to Deadline, the studio is looking for someone who isn't exactly a huge star, from the age of 28 to 32 and preferably working on a TV show. Luckily those guys meet the TV show criteria as they are all featured on a recurring show. Though, Jon Hamm is a bit older than the guidelines, I actually like his look. He's got a great superhero feel to him, very good actor, this could work. The rest I can give you much on, because I join the latter when I say I haven't seen the first 3 names.

Nonetheless, this is good news cause hey, any Superman news is good news.

The Spot News: Tom Hardy as....

By: Robert Acosta

So stop me if you've heard this before:

Tom Hardy as Hugo Strange in the next batman film: The Dark Knight Rises.

You didn't stop me? Well...that's all the news I had.

Kidding...somewhat. It's not confirmed, as most things aren't until the studio comes right out and says it. But it's from a source that, for some odd reason, has been good at getting news really early, and 100% correct. He's reporting it so it must be true! I don't fully believe it yet but why not? I actually think it makes sense.

The rumor of him playing Clayface wasn't a bad one but I definitely back up the Hugo Strange idea. Hardy has the action chops and maybe the look for Strange, as him as Clayface wouldn't allow him to use his skills as well.

As more Batman news comes along, and I know it will, I will pass it along.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter
Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley
Emma Watson as Hermione Granger
Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort

Plot: Harry must find all the horcruxes in order to destroy Voldemort and along the way, finds out about the deathly hallows which are 3 elements that can make a wizard nearly unstoppable.

Review: I've never been a apart of a movie that was broken up into different parts but are the whole movie. I'm not sure if Harry Potter is the only to do this but I doubt it. Nonetheless, it's extremely effective and suspenseful.

HP 7 starts off by showing the wizarding world and the state that it's in and it is not good. Everyone in both the wizarding world and human world are both fearful of the events going on, mostly in the wizarding world. Harry has to move from his place to the Weasley home, where he will be at the very least, watched over. From there Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, go from place to place trying to find the horcruxes that will stop the all powerful Lord Voldemort, while also finding security.

So going into this movie, you should know a part 2 is coming. So somewhere along the ride, the movie is going to get cut at a certain point. Don't get too disappointed at where it gets cut, it's a pretty good place to stop it.

The series has gone into a whole new world. It's still the wizarding world but it's seen in a whole new light. The main characters don't spend any time at Hogwarts, the school where most of the last 6 films took place in. Everything is outdoors or in some houses where they spend very small amounts of time in. It shows the whole universe in a new light and I gotta say, it's refreshing. Not that I didn't like the Hogwarts scenes in the other movies but it's great to see a change.

Some main characters you don't see very much and it's fine. Professor Snape is litterally in like 5 minutes of the movie, as is Draco Malfoy. The Weasley parents are shown very shortly, though they've been featured a lot the last few films.

The action is there, but there isn't a whole lot of it. You have the beginning parts that features action, some small parts in the middle and likewise in the end. There is however, a lot of crucial stories that they're building, a lot of good drama that needs to be shown. The lack of action is more than necessary, it holds true to the book. Which brings me to this next point.

It was brought to my attention by my colleague that had he been watching the film as a normal movie goer, he would have found the movie to be boring and dragged out. That's a reasonable statement. My rebuttal, and listen good people, is this. A normal movie goer, with no knowledge of the books of Harry Potter or at least the last 6 movies, should not be going to see this. Not that I prohibit you, but let's use our common sense. For the first time you decide to go see a Harry Potter movie and it's part 1 of the last film. That doesn't add up.

For fans of the movie, you're gonna love this movie. It holds true to the book, all the characters are maturing exactly the way they should and it's flat out phenomenal. Here's to the 2nd part being just as good, if not better. That's where all the action is by the way.

Rating: 5 out of 5

Coming Soon: Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1

By: Robert Acosta

The Harry Potter franchise is slowly, but surely coming to an end. The books are done, the movies are just a couple of parts away from done and once the DVD comes out for The Deathly Hallows, what's next? What's to become of the most famous book franchise turned film series?

Well luckily, that question doesn't have to be answered yet! We still have two more parts of movie to watch!

So this Harry Potter installment looks like it's going to be the darkest and most intense film in the series since...well...probably what Part 2 will be but other than that, this is gonna be some heavy shit. As it should be too, this is all ending.

I gotta say, when I saw the trailer, I've never had so many chills. It's probably the trailer of the year for being so immensely great. It shows everything it needs to in order to get people pumped. Show the drama, show the action, give us a lot to look forward too. That's all a trailer ever needs to do. Most trailers fail at one, two or all three parts of that.

The audience is all grown up, as are the characters in Harry Potter. I've read a couple of reviews for the movie already and I gotta say, it's earned its PG-13 rating as Joblo.com puts it.

If you haven't read the books or seen any of the movies..well...where have you been? And what are you doing here? Go rearrange your Netflix queue and get caught up!

Harry Potter fans rejoice, it's gonna be one hell of a ride. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 is out tomorrow, Friday, November 19th.

Editorial: Spider-Man Reboot=Unnecessary

By: Robert Acosta

I don't know too many people who don't love Spider-Man. It's a very short list, if there is a list at all. Some people were fans of Spidey through the comics, some through the TV shows, maybe some from the video games(though I doubt that part) and a good bunch became fans through the Spidey trilogy. Whatever the case, all fans alike, we're all pretty outraged right now.

In order to talk about where we are, we have to talk about where it, seemingly, all broke down. I bring you back to May 4th, 2007.

Tons of fans, young and old, wait in line to catch what is to probably be a sold out, packed showing of Spider-Man 3. The excitement is building as you watch the tail end of trailers that you're not entirely interested in. You've waited a couple years now for the sequel to what was, at the time, the greatest comic book movie of all time. You can't wait any longer when BOOM!, the trailers are done. The Marvel opening is playing and you're ready to go. The movie has started and your mind goes blank as you try to take everything in. A bit over 1 hour and 45 minutes later, it's over. You're left with this bad taste in your mouth. But you look around and realize, you're not the only one. What just happened?

After months and years of tackling the question I posed, the studio behind it all, Sony, decides they don't like the way things are going. Down goes the ship, with everyone. Captain, first mate, the crew, gone. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Sam Raimi, gone. What just happened?

I'll tell you what happened. They made a bad movie.

In a short, precise list of problems, here's what they did. Raimi packed way too many villains, sub plots into a movie. They killed off Venom, which for some odd reason carries over into other projects. Things got way too silly and out of hand with the symbiote effects on Peter Parker. That's my small list of things that went wrong but I could, but won't, go on.

Here's what they did wrong after the bad movie. Sony made a very hasty, ill advised decision in scrapping everything and starting new. They made one bad movie and they just threw in the towel on a Spider-Man 4 idea, almost immediately. Without much deliberation at all, a reboot was announced.

Here's where they went wrong after all the previous wrongs. In searching for a new director, they searched in all the wrong places. Instead of searching for a veteran director whose had some experience working with important projects and strong characters they go with an inexperienced director. Marc Webb. Now Webb is very well known in the music industry as he has made some of the better music videos for some good, well known bands. But this is a completely different business. He had his hit in (500) Days of Summer, which I highly regard and all. But this is Spider-Man. I don't really care much for his relationships between women. Let's see him get challenged by a real strong villain, who we haven't seen yet.

On top of the director not having much under his belt, we go to the most important part of the film. Spider-Man himself. A list of good candidates had risen out of the gossip and casting calls and what not. It included good strong actors like Logan Lerman, Jamie Bell, Michael Angarano among many others. Who gets cast? Andrew Garfield. A relatively unknown, male model with nothing much under his belt either. His performance in The Social Network left me hopeful, maybe giving him a chance as Spidey but he still wasn't the strongest pick. They were looking for a young, late teens- early 20's Peter Parker and you cast late 20's Garfield?

My final remark is this. If they wanted to do something different from what was the original Spider-Man 4 idea, I wouldn't be half as ticked off about this project. Before Spider-Man 4 went under, the idea was to introduce The Lizard/Dr. Conners as the villain. It was no secret that Raimi was a fan of the Lizard character and was eventually looking to use him. That idea gets nixed in lieu of the reboot. What does everyone agree on for the reboot? The Lizard being the villain. No less by someone who may or may not be a good choice for Lizard, no harsh remarks for Mr. Rhys Ifans. I just think Dylan Baker would have made that role great for Spidey 4. It just doesn't make sense. The idea that got nixed before, gets accepted for a lesser director to handle.

All in all, I want to say I have hope for this Spidey reboot. I want to say it's going to be good. But after dissecting and analyzing the problems, Spidey is hanging by a thread.

The Spot News: Guess what you'll be seeing next Halloween..

By: Robert Acosta

Where one horror franchise "ends" another continues right where the other left off. Confused? I shall explain.

The Saw franchise is seemingly over, for legacy sake let's hope it really is. So since were not having an annual Saw movie every Halloween, Paranormal Activity looks to fill the void.

That's right, Paranormal Activity 3 is on the way and set for Halloween 2011.

It doesn't surprise me that it is coming, i'm just not entirely excited. I was a big Saw fan, and I loved every movie of the series, against everyones dismay and distain for the series. This on the other hand, has me on the distain side.

I'll admit, I was a big fan of the first 2 Paranormal Activities. The first one scared the living hell out of me while the 2nd one took what the first one did and executed it much better. What's the third one gonna do? I may be spoiling the 2nd movie so for those who haven't seen Paranormal Activity 2, STOP READING NOW.

What are they honesty going to do? They did the demon haunting someone in the first part and they explained it even more in the 2nd part by essentially turning it into a prequel and explaining how Katie, from the first film, got the demon in the first place. So the third part is what? Unless it's a completely new scenario, I don't see how they could honestly get anymore out of the original story.

Whatever the case, why not quit while your ahead? Take the massive amount of profit you received from both films and go make an original idea that will actually make horror fans happy.

The Spot News: Red Riding Hood Trailer

Red Riding Hood Trailer

Not bad looking. Seems they are trying to get the Twilight audience. If they actually go all out on the wolf/wolves and take the story serious and not try to "Twilight-ify" it might be actually good.

The Spot News: Don't Make Del Toro Angry...

Marvel TV Has A Team Ready To Bring Hulk Back

Marvel’s upcoming Television Plans took another interesting turn with Guillermo Del Toro and Battlestar Galactica Producer David Eick teaming up to develop the new Hulk television series for ABC. Eick and Del Toro will develop the storyline together, with Eick then scripting and Del Toro attached to direct. Deadline said tonite:

Talk about a dream pairing for film and TV sci-fi/comic book fans: Guillermo del Toro, the mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy movie franchise, and Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick are finalizing a deal to create the new TV series version of The Hulk for ABC, which is being produced by Marvel TV and ABC Studios. It will mark Marvel’s first series project for ABC and ABC Studios since Disney’s acquisition of Marvel last year and the launch of Marvel’s TV division in June. It also marks del Toro’s first TV project. Details of the premise are sketchy but I hear that the series will follow an origin story.

The Spot News: The Green Lantern Trailer

First Official Trailer For DC Comics Green Lantern

The Spot News: Your Highness Trailer

By: Robert Acosta

How many times have we seen it? The right parts put together and yet, something is missing from the film or it's just lacking something. Too many times if you ask me.

I'm hoping this movie isn't one of those movies cause it's already looking like a strong candidate for Comedy of the Year for 2011. Though i've been wrong before.

Seriously though, how do you mix James Franco, Danny McBride, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel and not get a good movie? It just seems logical that this is going to be funny and worth your while. Just check out the trailer for yourself.

The Spot News: Americanized Martyrs

The Spot News: Americanized Martyrs

German Director Daniel Stamm is set to Americanize the horror film Martyrs. Stamm had this to say:
"Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over."

Now I don't know if anyone reading this has seen this movie but a possible "American" version of Martyrs will not work in any way. The movie is a total mind-f**k. The first half of the movie is a "traditional" horror movie with plenty of weirdness and what the hell is actually going on and is rather freaky. Then all of a sudden it twists itself into this psychological and uncomfortable whirlpool of insanity. I see no way to properly remake the movie for American audiences without completely cutting the second half of the movie. I say just dub it in English and release it as is.

DVD Releases November 16th

By: Robert Acosta

We get closer and closer to Thanksgiving and the small break away from life when people in schools and work get a couple days to themselves. What are you going to do during these days? Maybe watch DVDs? WHY NOT?!

So you gotta prepare for the watching of the DVDs right? Well check out the list for this week and see if you find anything you like:

NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • The Last Airbender
  • The Kids Are Alright
  • Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
  • Lottery Ticket
  • A Christmas Carol
  • Polar Express 3D (Only in Blu-Ray)
  • Open Season 3D (Only in Blu-Ray)
  • Peanuts Deluxe Holiday Collection (Only in Blu-Ray)
  • Twilight Zone (Season 2)
  • Heroes (Full Series)
  • The Office: Overtime
  • It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Sunny Christmas Giftset
So you've got some good choices here. Only problem is, all of them are TV shows, rather than movies.

You can't go wrong with Peanuts at all, any of the DVDs honestly. With 6 discs featuring all of the classic Charlie Brown holiday movies, this is the ultimate holiday collection. Too bad, it's only featured on Blu-Ray. If you're lucky enough to have a Blu-Ray contraption, this is a must have.

I was never a big fan of Heroes, didn't get into it. Though I understand people loved the show, which is why it got cancelled right? Anyways, Heroes full series DVD is something only a fan would love.

Lastly, if you're looking for good ol' comedy show to laugh at, you've got two good choices. Both don't really offer much more than a good episode or two but they're both pretty inexpensive and a good pick ups.

Check back next week for more DVD picks!

P.S. Notice I said nothing about The Last Airbender. You give you enough info to fill in the blanks.

Weekend Box Office Numbers November 12th-14th

By: Robert Acosta

So with November half way done, there hasn't been too many surprises with the numbers. It made sense for Megamind to come out in the top spot due to it being in 3D and all. How about this week? Any surprises? Let us take a look:

  1. MegaMind   $30.1 Million
  2. Unstoppable   $23.5 Million
  3. Due Date   $14.5 Million
  4. Skyline   $11.7 Million
  5. Morning Glory   $9.6 Million
  6. For Colored Girls   $6.8 Million
  7. Red   $5.1 Million
  8. Paranormal Activity 2   $3.1 Million
  9. Saw 3D   $2.8 Million
  10. Jackass 3D   $2.3 Million
So what do you know, Megamind takes the top spot for a 2nd week in a row. I honestly thought Unstoppable would take the top spot, with Skyline as my surprise pick to maybe take the top spot. Wrong on both accounts on my part but it's ok!

Megamind was an OK movie but the 3D sales are really pushing this movies sales. Unstoppable was a close 2nd, though that was just an OK movie too. Funny how all these OK movies are making some decently good money. Due Date is seemingly getting the short end of the stick and may be the better movie in the top 5, though Morning Glory has caught my attention.

To round it out, the two top Halloween movies are holding on at positions 8 and 9, though that may come to an end come next week. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is out in theaters this Friday. If I were a betting man, my money is on Mr. Potter to be at number 1 come next Sunday when the results are out.

The Spot News: Poster and Trailer for The Eagle

Poster and Trailer for The Eagle

The synopsis: In 140 AD, two men - master and slave - venture beyond the edge of the known world on a dangerous and obsessive quest that will push them beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism...

The Roman epic adventure THE EAGLE stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell and is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald. 20 years earlier, Rome's 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius Aquila, marched north carrying their treasured golden Eagle emblem. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Flavius' son Marcus (Tatum), determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, is galvanized into action. Accompanied only by his slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out into the vast and dangerous highlands of Scotland - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the hallowed Eagle. Along the way Marcus realizes that the mystery of his father's disappearance may well be linked to the secret of his own slave's identity and loyalty - a secret all the more pressing when the two come face-to-face with the warriors of the fearsome Seal Prince

The Spot News: Y: The Last Man set for HBO?

Y: The Last Man Turning Into A HBO Series?

Louis Leterrier wants to turn the in development hell project, Y: The Last Man, into a series or miniseries for HBO.

New Line first optioned Brian K Vaughan's comics series for a feature film. But Set backs sent the project way way back on the back burner.

Leterrier's not formally attached to the project but is trying to convince New Line and parent company Warner Bros. to let him run with an ambitious idea. "[It wouldn't work as] one large film, no. I'd love to do it as a TV show or a three-part series."

The problem always seemed to stem from the difficulty in adapting Vaughan's work, which spanned five years and 60 issues, into one two-hour movie. Says Leterrier of TV, "You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don't need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies."

The unfortunate thing is that "the people financing it don't know if it's a TV show a movie, or what it should be," explains Leterrier. I love the idea of a series on HBO and hopefully it's something Leterrier can convince New Line/WB to work with sister company HBO on finally bringing the story to life.

The Spot News: Batman lead lady(ies?)

By: Robert Acosta

So Batman news just seems to keep pouring in week after week and yet, it's getting more and more interesting. Let's see what we have this week.

So it appears that we have some big name women auditioning for some undisclosed villain role and the love interest for Bruce Wayne. Here's the list of actresses auditioning:

  • Natalie Portman
  • Anne Hathaway
  • Rachel Weisz
  • Blake Lively
  • Naomi Watts
  • Keira Knightley
So here's my guess at the way things could be going down. Portman, Watts and possibly Weisz are all up for the role of Catwoman. While Hathaway, Lively and Knightley are all up for the love interest for Mr. Batman.

That's my guess at things, though things could go in many different directions. Weisz could also be very fitting has the love interest, as well as Hathaway could be in a villain role. The woman has some serious acting chops. Though Portman could also be a love interest as well....see where all this mess begins?

No matter what happens, this can only be good for the Batman movie. All 6 actresses would do very well in this movie and this would heigthen any of their careers.

And finally, the number 1 movie on the greatest comedies in recent years list. Was it really a surprise?

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Bradley Cooper as Phil
Zach Galifinakis as Alan
Ed Helms as Stu
Justin Bartha as Doug

Plot: A weekend in Vegas for an upcoming groom and his best friends turns into hell when they have a wild night.

Review: No really, was it surprise? This has to be number 1, nothing else would have made sense.

The Hangover is going to go down as one of the classic comedies, seen from every generation. Mentioned in the same breath as some of the past golden comedies like Animal House, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack.

Let's get into the details.

You follow three of the four main characters throughout the movie as they try to find their friend, Doug. That leaves three hilarious people on an adventure together and they're chemistry is pretty amazing. I mean they as in Bradley Cooper as Phil, Ed Helms as Stu and Zach Galifinakis as Alan. The chemistry is so good that you throw in anybody else for either of the three roles and it changes the movie entirely.

There is a reason why this is number 1 on the greatest comedies in recent years list. It's because it packs laughs more and more efficiently than any other movie in the last 10 years. If you watch The Hangover and don't laugh hard and out aloud at least once, you should go see a doctor. Something is wrong with you.

Much like 40 Year Old Virgin, The Hangover really takes the careers of everyone involved and just boosts it to a whole new level. Zach Galifinakis has suddenly become one of, if not the funniest man on the earth at the moment. Bradley Cooper has been starring in many more mainstream films, though maybe given his look that was inevitable. Ed Helms...well....is still Ed Helms. And most people seem to forget about Justin Bartha.

There is a cameo from Mike Tyson and depending on your style of comedy, he may have the funniest bit in the movie. Gotta love Tyson.

Finally, The Hangover is a classic. For those who saw it, you agree with my whole-heartedly(right?) on this pick. For those who haven't seen it, stop reading and go check it out. Well it's the end of the review anyway, lucky you.

P.S., There is a sequel in the works which should be a surprise to no one. The success, both financially and critically, that this film has made is staggering. Here's to the sequel holding true to the original and being equally, if not more, hilarious.

Love & Other Drugs Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Jake Gyllenhall as Jamie Randall
Anne Hathaway as Maggie Murdock
Hank Azaria as Dr. Knight
Josh Gad as Josh Reidy

Plot: A medication salesman, Jamie, finds himself under the spell of love when he unexpectedly falls for Maggie Murdock.

Review: Love & Other Drugs is a movie I may have ended up paying for in theaters, as much as I thought it would be a chick flick and one of those horrible romantic comedies. Luckily, it was still a rom-com but an actual good one and I did not end up paying for it.

It starts you out by introducing Gyllenhall in his normal habitat. A player. Working in a electronic store, macking on all the female employees and female customers. He ends up being fired from that place after he works too hard on working with one of the female employees. Get my drift?

He's jobless while his brother is becoming successful and, of course, becoming a prick. Gyllenhall's character, Jamie, ends up attending tons of Pfizer conventions and hopes he will be able to sell medication to doctors and hospitals, just so he can make ends meet. Slowly but surely, he works his way up and along the way, BOOM, meets the love interest Maggie Murdock.

What's so great about the movie is that it definitely has the feel of some of the older and better romantic comedies of the past. Movies like When Harry Met Sally and Pretty Woman both came to mind while watching Love & Other Drugs. Obviously in romantic comedies, you have to have an element of both those genres and both are really there. The romance is shown in bunches, but doesn't overpower the comedic parts. The comedy is there, not too light, not too strong but just right. Your stomach won't hurt of laughter but you'll be satisfied.

On to the individual performances. This should definitely go down as one of Jake Gyllenhall's better performances. Up there with Brokeback Mountain and maybe Jarhead. He looks very natural in the role of man whore, so to say, and then really turns out to be a closet romantic at heart. Anne Hathway gives you the cynical side of everything. Does it get slightly annoying? Yes. But is it understandable after everything you get to know about her? Very much so. Hathaway's character starts out being the exact opposite of Gyllenhall but by movies end, they're very much the same. Damn closet romantics.

Overall, Love & Other Drugs is one of the better movies of the year. When it hits theaters in just two weeks, I hope and expect it to be received positively. It's one of the very few romantic comedies that actually works.

DVD Releases November 9th

By: Robert Acosta

As the holidays approach, DVDs are coming in full swing, and good ones too. So what will you be picking up this week or in coming weeks? In a side bit, black Friday is coming so definitely pay attention to the movies coming out now. They'll most likely be on sale for black Friday.

Here are the DVD releases for this week:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is available in Blu-Ray

  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
  • Grown Ups
  • Charlie St. Cloud
  • Ramona and Beezus
  • Ocean's 11(Original;Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam
  • Metalocalypse(Season 3)
  • Californication(Season 3)
  • Golden Girls: 25th Anniversary Complete Collection
So there is a huge list of great DVDs you can pick up this week, you can't go wrong with a lot of DVDs here.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is easily one of the better movies of the year, a great blend of action, comedy and great special effects. It really doesn't pack too much but the movie on its own is pretty damn good and worth a buy.

Grown Ups is also out on DVD today and is a solid comedy. If you're looking for something too watch that isn't too raunchy but still packs a very good laugh, Grown Ups is for you. Once again, it's your run of the mill stuff in terms of the DVD but definitely worth a watch.

Finally, there isn't too much in the TV department but that's alright. I can still recommend something!

Metalocalypse is definitely one of the funnier shows out on TV right now and hey, the music isn't too shabby either. The season 3 DVD comes with two discs packed with over 200 minutes worth of episodes.

So that's it for this week, make sure you come back next week for more DVD releases!

Almost there..Here is the runner up on the greatest comedies in recent years list

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Jason Segal as Peter Bretter
Mila Kunis as Rachel Jansen
Russell Brand as Aldous Snow
Kristen Bell as Sarah Marshall

Plot: In an attempt to get over his celebrity ex girlfriend Sarah Marshall, Peter goes to Hawaii where his life becomes a rollercoaster.

Review: This is what happens when Judd Apatow gets a hold of a movie. He turns it into comedic gold. The producer of great comedies like 40 year old virgin, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, Funny People, Anchorman, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and much much more. Yet, Forgetting Sarah Marshall may be his best.

Jason Segal is already featured at number 4 on the greatest comedies in recent years list with his role in I Love You, Man but this is the role that will define him. Other than How I Met Your Mother that is. This is the role where he just seems natural in, owns it and takes over the movie.

Though don't be mistaken, he's not alone in this great comedy. You have the beautiful, sexy, yet strikingly funny women in Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell. You have small roles/cameos from the always funny Bill Hader and Paul Rudd. And of course, you have the internationally funny Russell Brand. It's like the B list of comedy, thrown together to make this hilarious movie.

I'm not gonna lie, i'm a big fan of movies with some drama in them. Especially comedies than can mix both laughs and thought. Forgetting Sarah Marshall definitely packs both in its arsenal, which makes it one of the better comedies in the last 10 years. You have opening scenes where Peter has a surprise(and a lack of clothing) for his girlfriend Sarah Marshall and then later on in the film you have this heart felt argument between the two on why it all fell apart.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is extremely well done, as more than just a comedy. It has both moments of comedy and sorrow mixed in with a happy ending and rarely do comedies pull that off in a way that works. That is why Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the runner up on the greatest comedies in recent years list.

The number 3 movie on the recent greatest comedies list is...

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Simon Pegg as Shaun
Kate Ashfield as Liz
Nick Frost as Ed

Plot: When a zombie apocalypse hits, Shaun must find a way to stay alive and help his friends, and ex girlfriend, live.

Review: Shaun of the Dead is a rare breed of comedy that really only comes along once every decade or so. It manages to take a very serious predicament, make it insanely funny, and still show that there's a real issue at hand.

Simon Pegg is definitely one of the funnier actors around but he's talented as well as he both starred and wrote the script for Shaun of the Dead. He was the writer for not only Shaun of the Dead but the 2007 comedies Run Fatboy Run and Hot Fuzz and wrote the script for the upcoming 2011 comedy, Paul.

Pair Pegg with his hilarious sidekick Nick Frost and have the movie directed by Edgar Wright and the movie is bound to be gold. I believe Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is the best duo in a movie, probably of all time. I know, that's a bold statement. With the likes of Owen Wilson & Ben Stiller, Chris Tucker & Jackie Chan and Mel Gibson & Danny Glover, i'm really making a bold statement. But these two, Pegg and Frost, really do perfect the term "Bromance" even before it was really thought of.

As for the content itself, it is all there. A good blend of action, comedy, bits of drama sprinkled here and there. The comedy is top notch. From the way zombies are being killed to the small jokes being told during this zombie apocalypse, it's all there.

Once again, Shaun of the Dead is a comedy with substance. It seems to be the recurring theme of this list of greatest recent comedies but, you can't go wrong with a comedy that manages to tackle a somewhat serious topic. You can't go wrong with the number 3 movie on the recent greatest comedies list, Shaun of the dead.

Following up on the coundown with the number 4 movie on the greatest comedies in recent years list...

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Paul Rudd as Peter Klaven
Jason Segal as Sydney Fife
Rashida Jones as Zooey Rice

Plot: A soon to be married man, Peter Klaven is struggling to find a best man as he never really had any male friends. Klaven must find a best man before his wedding turns into a disaster.

Review: You want to talk about bromance? We got your bromance right here.

Sydney Fife, played by Jason Segal and Peter Klaven, played by Paul Rudd, are the epitomy of what a bromance is, and is supossed to be. Some movies have gotten it wrong, even though they've put in strong efforts. Without this bromance, this movie goes straight to movie hell. Down there with Showgirls and Aeon Flux and those kind of movies.

Paul Rudd as Peter Klaven is your typical Rudd performance. He gives the subtle comments that are funny and even adds in some outrageous moments, silly scenes and even some of those uncomfortable moments added into his comedic repertoire. Of course without Sydney Fife, the Peter Klaven character isn't alive or fun. Fife brings out the best and worst of Peter and it's what makes the movie great.

There are a couple of background characters but they aren't as strongly featured. You have Peter's FiancĂ©e, Zooey who is both loving and damn funny with Peter. You have Peter's gay brother Robbie, played by the hilarious Andy Samberg, who tries to set Peter on man dates to find his best man for his wedding. And a man is probably apart of the funniest scene in the film, Lonnie played by Joe Lo Truglio, who seemingly has a horrible voice cracking problem.

The story is definitely unique and out there and it's a funny story to tell. There is a slight blend of comedy and drama, but enough comedy that this doesn't become too much of a sleeper or sob story.

I Love you, man is more than a serviceable or solid comedy. It's comedy with many memorable moments and some of the better characters featured in a comedy movie. That is why it is Number 4 on the list of the greatest comedies in recent years.

Megamind Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Will Ferrell as Megamind
Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchi
Jonah Hill as Tighten
Brad Pitt as Metroman

Plot: After many failed attempts of defeating his Superhero nemesis Metroman, Megamind finally rids of him. He gets bored and must create a new Superhero to fill the void that he has left both in his life and in Metro city.

Review: Initially, you're going to hear that Megamind is a mix of the movies The Incredibles and Despicable Me. Both of those films were tremendous for the animation department of movies and while Megamind shows some similarities of those movies, it's not exactly the great blend of those movies.

Megamind follows the villain, Megamind, as he introduces himself and his rivalry with Metroman. He allegedly defeats Megamind and has the city all to himself. He soon realizes that he needed Metroman almost as much as the citizens of the city did, he was incomplete without him. So, he creates a new superhero and that plan, like all of his plans, backfired.

And so the comedy ensues. Or so it should. Not that it didn't have its funny moments but it was more clever than funny. It tried too much to reinvent the wheel if you know what I mean. Not that it would have worked better if it was the typical story but I think it tried too hard to be unique, rather than letting it be what it was. A satiric view of the whole superhero genre.

So in trying too hard to be something it's not, the comedy also becomes forced rather than flowed. It was forced and at times, just plain unfunny. Then at times it showed its silly and funny nature and you think the movie had a chance at being entertaining.

The story is a bit played out. The villain is shown doing exactly what he does best, achieves at something, wants to be the superhero or viewed differently and it all works out in the end. Though in this case it just has to do with superheroes rather than the people featured in drama movies.

Overall, Megamind has its ups and downs, almost evenly. It definitely has its laugh out loud moments and it also has its dull moments. Clever, unfunny, satire, superhero movie. For what it's worth, i'm split and that will be the feeling you leave with.

Weekend Box Office Numbers November 5th-7th

By: Robert Acosta

So as we head into one of the stronger month of movies, and probably the last one for the year(December sucks!) let's take a look at this past weekend box office numbers:
  1. Megamind   $47.7 Million
  2. Due Date   $33.5 Million
  3. For Colored Girls   $20.1 Milliom
  4. Red   $8.9 Million
  5. Saw 3D   $8.2 Million
  6. Paranormal Activity 2   $7.3 Million
  7. Jackass 3D   $5.1 Million
  8. Hereafter   $4 Million
  9. Secretariat   $4 Million
  10. The Social Network   $3.6 Million
So no surprise that Megamind takes the top spot this week, with it being released in 3D i'm sure that number above is very boosted.

There aren't too many surprises here in this top 10, though maybe Red shouldn't be around anymore, it's still going very strong. Glad to see The Social Network hanging on there at 10 but expect this to be the last time in the top 10.

Next week brings us Unstoppable, Skyline and Morning Glory. Unstoppable packs the heavy hitters and recognizable stars but i'm picking Skyline to take the top spot next week. Whose with me?
