Originals VS Remakes Friday The 13TH
Original VS Remake: Friday The 13TH
By Jose
Now forgive me but I will most likely jump around to different points and comparisons between the original and remake of Friday The 13TH.
So now onto the most famous masked killer of Crystal Lake, Manhattan, and even space. Yes space.
Jason Voorhees.
Well to begin the most obvious change between the new version and the original is the killer himself. Or herself in this case. The original killer of Crystal lake was Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother, who stalked and murdered the teenagers who are preparing Camp Crystal Lake for re-opening. She is determined to make sure the camp does not reopen after her son drowned in the lake, because two staff members, who were supposed to be watching him, were having sex. I will get back to the sex part in a minute because it is important. The 2009 version basically condenses the entire original movie into a few minutes and we are then left with just Jason killing whoever stumbles into the camp and lake area. I found that the 2009 movie did the right thing here. They kept the origin story line while not wasting a whole movie on just that and went straight into Jason himself being the killer.
Now before I go on I want to address the remake bubble. Hollywood knows that these movies will make money if done right. But what Hollywood doesn’t understand is that if you hire crappy people to create the movie and depend on just the name of the movie to generate money they are screwing themselves. Another problem they have is that they believe the more butts in the theater the more money so then the rating of the movie gets changed. So a horror movie that has done well being rated R becomes a “teen-downed” version rated PG-13 just to make more money.
So what does that have to do with anything? Considering that some PG-13 horror movies do well. I agree. But not with these characters. Friday the 13Th remake would not have been great if it was PG-13, hell the original movies would have failed if it wasn’t rated R. Why? Because of this: “ her son drowned in the lake, because two staff members, who were supposed to be watching him, were having sex “
That is the origin of Jason and the whole Friday The 13TH franchise. Jason killed and kills anyone who goes to Camp Crystal Lake. He also targets those who are, who were, or who did have sex throughout the movies. Nudity and sex is an important part of Friday The 13th as is the mask and machete.
Back to the movies. Out of all the remakes recently done. I felt that Friday The 13TH stayed true to what made the originals great. Instead of just remaking and changing and messing around with the character they just went ahead and breathed a new life into the franchise. The originals are still there, yes even Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason in space, but now we have a current version that compliments and to a certain degree a better movie.
