Review: I gotta say, musical and dance movies are my guilty pleasure. Not to say that there is anything wrong with either styles but everyone has got their guilty pleasure. When I heard there was going to be a Step Up 3 AND in 3D, I thought this ought to be good. I was mostly mistaken.

Obviously in a dance movie the story really isn't a big part of the movie. Thing is, both Step up and Step Up to The Streets had decent stories, i'd even go as far to say that they were good. Step Up 3D on the other hand, had a horrible story. To sum up the story it basically goes like this. Luke somehow has this crazy, big house type space that he uses to give the abandoned dancers he took in space to rehearse, practice and just dance. Luke gets very close to losing this space so he must come up with the money as soon as possible. He finds two more dancers, Moose and Natalie, and finishes creating a group to compete at a world dance competition to win $100,000.

The story was just boring and I didn't really feel anything for the characters or anyone for that matter.

Of course it is a dance movie and that's where the movie redeems itself...a little bit. The dance sequences were pretty damn bad ass. The 3D was actually used! I'm excited to say that cause like 90% of the 3D movies now, don't even use the effect anymore. In Step Up 3D you have arms flailing at you, objects coming your way, the works.

Back to the dancing. The sequences were great, they'll have you going "whoa" and being pretty amazed by the moves these dancers pull off. One inparticular guy, I guess we'll call him Robot Man, was the greatest. He would come in to the sequence, do some sort of robotic move that looked just awesome and that would be it. Way to make an impact.

One more note about the dancing, and this is bad. The lead actor, Rick Malambri, can't dance! What kind of dance movie has their lead actor not dance? He'll do a couple of moves and then bam! he's gone and everyone else gets shown off. In the past we had Channing Tatum and Robert Hoffman who were actual dancers. Hell I even think Robert Hoffman is a professional dancer first, actor second. Vice versa for Channing Tatum. Rick Malambri just can't dance and it's sad.

Overall, I expected Step Up 3D to be at least alright. The dancing was tremendous, that I cannot deny. The acting and the story however, just pulled it down tremendously. I'd wait for it on DVD or even TV cause it isn't worth the price of admission.

Rating: 2 out of 5
