The Spot News: Three Stooges, still on as well?

By: Robert Acosta

The previous post dealt with a movie that seemed like it was on the rocks because nothing really was moving forward. Same stuff, different movie.

A Three Stooges film has been in talks for quite some time now, but nothing really moved past just talks. Finally, The Farrelly brothers were ready to tackle this giant task. They even had a preliminary cast put together. Benicio Del Toro as Moe, Sean Penn as Larry and Jim Carrey as Curly. Little by little though, the cast started to pull out. No one really gave a reason, except Carrey, for why they were out but they're out.

That was a few months ago. Now, comes news that the Farrelly brothers have a small list of actors they're looking at. Listen to this. Johnny Knoxville as Moe, Andy Samberg as Larry and Shane Jacobson as Curly.

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this cast. The cast listed before with Del Toro, Penn and Carrey seemed like it would have been alright, based more on acting than straight up comedy. This new cast, Knoxville, Samberg and Jacobson seems like it's going to push the comedy. It's an unexpected cast if they get casted. Here is some of the thoughts from the Farrelly brothers in a interview with theWrap:

"The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now. We'll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we're going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flintstones. You've got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown. The plan is to divide the PG-rated film into three, 27-minute segments driven by physical comedy, with a start date of March 14"

So essentially, we're going to have the Three Stooges shorts the way they were but with a modern cast. With this project my stance has always been, just leave it alone. If you're going after it, please put 200% into this and don't fuck it up. I hope it's in the right hands.
