Red Review

Red Review

By Jose

Starring: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman, Brian Cox, and Richard Dreyfuss

Plot:

When his idyllic life is threatened by a high-tech assassin, former black-ops agent Frank Moses reassembles his old team in a last ditch effort to survive.

Review:

When Bruce Willis plays his indestructible yet on the surface everyday guy he is right where the audience loves him. In RED, "Retired Extremely Dangerous", he has a close to perfect vehicle. And, so RED delivers in spite of a fairly ridiculous scenario of a group of ex-CIA operatives, of which Willis is one, being singled out for execution on the eve of the vice-president announcing his candidacy for president.

We get the message from the first that Willis is somewhat lonely and bored with retirement and is searching for a companion to make his new life matter. He isn't aching to get back to fast track, but is venerable and is fixated on a kind and cheery voice on the other end of the phone line when he complains about not getting his pension checks (he tears them up just to talk to his "handler"). He arranges a meeting with the sweet sounding girl just prior to everything falling apart because the CIA sends in a "wet" team to erase him. As suspected the CIA and most of all the resources of the government are not up to the task.

Willis reassembles his old team, all in his age bracket or older, in order to survive. That team, if not on the surface a formidable threat, is pure cinematic gold as it consists of excellent performances by Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren. It is almost impossible not to like this film because of the wonderfully entertaining supporting cast. In fact Malkovich steals the show providing the correct dosage of crazed comic relief. This leads to impossible feats making for deliciously served up entertainment; all with a "nod-and-a-wink" that cuts through the unbelievable. Great action with comedy! Richard Dreyfus turns in a solid performance as a spoiled smart-ass (uber-wealthy and powerful) arms dealer who pulls strings behind the scenes. And, Ernest Borgnine has a cameo role which is memorable.

Final Thoughts:

It's a character driven action comedy that truly is ridiculous, entertaining, and delightful. This movie is hard to fault in spite of being pure light-weight fluff. See it and smile.

DVD Releases December 7th

By: Robert Acosta

This is kind of a big week, at least for me, DVD wise. Possibly the best movie of the year is out, along with some good surprises to go along with it. Let's be happy the holidays are here, because sales are on the way.

Definitely look out for them. Until then, here are this weeks DVD releases:
NOTE: Bold means DVD is also available in Blu-Ray

  • Inception
  • Shrek Forever After
  • Shrek: The Whole Story
  • Lost In Translation(Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • Rush Hour(Only available in Blu-Ray)
  • Boy Meets World(Season 4)
  • Law & Order(Season 8)
  • World Series 2010 Texas Rangers vs San Francisco Giants
  • Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel
Where to begin?!

Inception is a DVD you want to pick up. Without a doubt in my mind, it's one of the best movies, not just of the year, but of quite some time. There is definitely going to be a lot of good special features explaining more parts of the story and the cool special effects that take place in the movie.

Shrek Forever After is out on DVD today but I think it's better to just grab the whole thing with the Shrek: The Whole Story set. It comes with all 4 movies, for about $40. Of course, if you have the other 3 films then yes, go with the single Shrek Forever After DVD.

In a shocker, Boy Meets World Season 4 is out on DVD! I personally can't remember the last Boy Meets World DVD release date but its been a little while and this definitely came out of nowhere.

In the end, this week is good week to go out and get some good movies!

The Spot News: Iron Man 3 A Sequel To Three Other Movies?

Marvel Sees Iron Man 3 As A Sequel To Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers

By Jose

Jon Favreau recently spoke to MTV while doing interviews for his upcoming Cowboys and Aliens movie about the plans for Iron Man 3. Jon said:

"Kevin Feige, who's been involved with Marvel since the X-MEN films, is very aware of his path and how to weave the things. So in theory, IRON MAN 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of THOR, HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and AVENGERS. So that whole world... I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those guys."

Well it is nice of Marvel to try and create a single movie universe for all there movies. But I do hope that while doing that they don't screw up the potential for these movies, under that unified umbrella, to do great separately with just some nods and cameos to the other films. We can only wait and see what they do with Thor and Captain American coming next year.

Devil Review

Devil Review

By Jose

Starring: Chris Messina, Logan Marshall Green, Jenny O’Hara, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffery Arend, Jacob Vargas, and Matt Craven

Plot:

A group of people trapped in an elevator realize that the devil is among them.

Review:

Maybe it's because M Night Shyamalan is finally coming to terms that he no longer is the toast of the town, that he has decided to focus his energies on producing and writing suspenseful thrillers for his project known as The Night Chronicles, with the first film Devil. So without Shyamalan having his hands in this film other than writing and produce here come directors Drew and John Erick Dowdle, who I thought made a decent effort in bringing to life Shyamalan's story. A story set around the confines of a claustrophobic lift, where five strangers happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, each of them being trapped inside the lift and sharing some common traits that will be revealed as the story went on. The film addresses the notion that nothing is ever coincidental, especially if powerful negative forces like the devil decide to walk the earth and claim a few souls, while at the same time having fun toying with their prey. Weaving in a folk tale like what he did for Lady in the Water, Shyamalan's tale here involves the full works of how the devil operates, and comes with a method to defeat the supernatural forces seen in the film.

The directors managed to steer clear of the usual clichés for a fright fest, and rightly so as well because this is not that film. Granted that there are a few well crafted scenes to suggest that there are spiritual elements involved in how the victims - a mechanic (Logan Marshall- Green), an old woman (Jenny O'Hara), a young woman (Bojana Novakovic), a guard (Bokeem Woodbine) and a salesman (Geoffrey Arend) - the real draw is how visually arresting this film is in capturing fear from within close quarters. The opening sweeping shot of the city of Philadelphia upside down will bring about some disorientation, before reducing that spatial distance down to within the lift, mirroring that view through a CCTV camera back to the building's security control room, which to me is where some of the best instances of the film shines through.

I'd actually preferred what went on outside of that lift, since what's going to happen within is more like a done deal, with one of the five already revealed through marketing that he/she is someone who doesn't belong. There's more fun in following Detective Bowden (Chris Messina), who has to make sense of what's going on, balancing his deductive prowess against something that cannot be explained by logic, and watching how his due diligence and process get blown to smithereens when at first he thinks this is a simple open and shut situation, until he realizes that he's up against something that's inexplicable. It's one thing to swagger in with a plan, before fear sets in that one can be so helpless when trying to save the lives of others.

The strength of the film lies in Shyamalan's story, which is deceptively simple, yet highly effective in weaving all the plot threads together, and the linking up of the characters so crucial in providing a satisfying finale. Fans of Shyamalan's stories will find that he still has more than enough gas in the tank to come up with suspenseful tales that others now have a chance to helm on the big screen. My interest is now piqued to see how the rest of the Chronicles will present themselves.

Firebreather Cartoon network Movie Review

Firebreather Cartoon network Movie Review

By Jose

Plot:

All Duncan wants is to be a normal kid in a normal school. Until he realizes he is something very far away from normal.

Review:

"Firebreather," a new animated movie, tells the tale of Duncan, who would be a normal high school student, your basic new hot guy on campus, if it weren't for the fact his skin is orange and scaly, he eats coal, and half human half Kaiju. His mother once saved the world from an invasion of these dragons, Kaiju, and his father just so happens to be the king of them.

The animation is actually simple and stylized, yet looks really clean and great. It fit’s the movie nicely. The story is pretty straight forward new guy in high school with teen angst but with a whole lot of dragons, fire breathing, and a kaiju battles. I really enjoyed this movie tremendously and hope that Cartoon Network continues this trend of entertaining and quality TV movies.

The Spot News: Bond 23, still moving forward

By: Robert Acosta

James Bond is the man right? Every movie he kicks basically everybody's ass, gets the hot girl in the end, drives all these fancy cars and use all these really cool gadgets.

One thing Bond can't do is help MGM with their horrible monetary issues. A potentially new Bond project is just flailing in the wind, waiting for the moment it gets caught and turned into a film.

It may not have to wait all too long.

Deadline is reporting that "007 insiders" are piecing things together to make Bond 23 happen. It is said to be focusing on getting a November 2012 release date/

For the sake of the fans, and a very prestigious series, I hope this all works out. I've enjoyed the recent Bond films, both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were more than solid entries in the Bond legacy.

The Spot News: Galifinakis, Ferrell, 2012 Elections?

By: Robert Acosta

I've heard some crazy things in my life, and most of those crazy things come when I skim through things or quickly graze through an article. You can imagine my confusion when I thought I read, "Will Ferrell and Zach Galifinakis running for president in 2012."

Now that line is still true, just in a film that they will be starring in together. I thought the world was finally waking up and throwing in good candidates to take over the world. Sadly, I'm wrong.

Nonetheless, the untitled comedy will follow Ferrell and Galifinakis as they play presidential nominees, having to battle for the presidency.

I love both Ferrell and Galifinakis, it's no secret. I also like the director Jay Roach, who also directed the Austin Powers movies. Along with the writers of great comedies like The Other Guys and the hit TV comedy Eastbound & Down. Can this go wrong? I surely hope not! You'll see in the editorial I post tomorrow about what I really think about Galifinakis and the position he is in.

Until then, may the best man win.
