Grave Encounters - Horror Spot Review

Grave Encounters - Horror Spot Review

By Jose

Plot:

Lance Preston and the crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena has been reported for years. All in the name of good television, they voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera. They quickly realize that the building is more than just haunted - it is alive - and it has no intention of ever letting them leave.

Cast:

Sean Rogerson (lance Preston), Juan Riedinger (Matt White), Ashleigh Gryzko (Sasha Parker), Mackenzie Gray (Houston Gray), Merwin Monde sir (T.C Gibson)

Review:

It's a waste of time to complain that movies like this have been done before. Yes, they have and if you don't like them, don't watch them. I don't think I will ever understand why people watch a movie like this expecting something totally new and different and super high art to fulfill their overly pretentious taste and make them feel like true film critics- Please. Just stop over-analyzing, relax and go with it and have fun.

With that said, Grave Encounters attempted to change up the found footage genre a bit by making it seem like it was a new ghost hunting reality show gone wrong. And to me it succeeded in delivering a different and scary movie.

The beginning of the film shows all the behind the scenes type of stuff you would think happens with these ghost hunting shows. Setting up shots and interviews. Making things up and paying people off to say what they want them too to provide a scary story or add a bit of suspense and mystery. Re shooting shots and filming multiple takes. Static and time lapse shots. Etc. Grave Encounters delivers on that and makes it the comedic side of the film. And it is not until the group begins there lock up at the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital that things start to take a turn for the worse.

At first we see the group go and find nothing, just messing around, and getting frustrated that this episode will suck and maybe get the show cancelled. But then the noises start and then things slamming. TC goes alone and gets a door slammed on him. Scary the crap out of him and us. Then Sasha gets her hair tossed. And now things start picking up. As the group decides to call it a night they send their tech guy, Matt to grab all the cameras to leave. Well in one area, where the window opens, he hears something and goes to see what it was. Well he disappears.

So the rest of the film the remaining group goes out to search for Matt. All encountering scary and down right frightening things. They find themselves lost in a labyrinth maze of endless hallways and corridors, terrorized by the ghosts of the former patients. They soon begin to question their own sanity, slipping deeper and deeper into the depths of madness, ultimately discovering the truth behind the hospital's dark past...and taping what turns out to be their final episode.

The scares of Grave Encounters are exactly that scares. They will make you jump and panic. A random woman runs across the hallway into a room. They go and see what the hell she is only for her to turn, scream, and scare the shit out of the cast and the viewer.

Later on we see the recovered photos, which are shown to us soon after they are taken, and we see what they never had a chance to see. All the spirits and mists. The hands and faces in the windows and glass. Then in one room a table moves then gets thrown up and down. Houston Gray, lost, gets grabbed by something we can’t see and thrown around and tossed. Soon dragged away. In the suicide room, a blood filled tub sits in the middle. A woman bursts out and grabs TC. The tub is tossed and no one is there. Later some creature/patients fall from the ceiling and chase after the remaining group (Lance and Sasha). We end with Lance going insane and finding his way to a secret room where he finds himself confronted by the evil spirits of the doctor and nurses.

Final Thoughts:

Grave Encounters may not have been this spectacular film that revolutionized the found footage genre of horror. But it did provide just that. Horror. It scared to crap out of me and who I watched it with. And if a movie scares me the way Grave Encounters did, it certainly did it’s job. The movie reminded me of how I felt seeing the first Paranormal Activity. I highly recommend seeing it or adding it to your horror movie list to see this Halloween.

American Horror Story - Small Screen/Horror Spot Review

American Horror Story - Small Screen/Horror Spot Review

Episode One - Pilot

The Harmon family moves from Boston to Los Angeles to escape their painful past but find that their troubles are far from over. Psychiatrist Ben (Dylan McDermott) struggles to regain his wife Vivien's (Connie Britton) trust after he sleeps with one of his students. Still recovering from a recent stillbirth, Vivien begins to sense something wrong with the house while dealing with intrusive neighbor Constance (Jessica Lange) and her daughter, Addy (Jamie Brewer), who has Down syndrome. When investigating the attic of the home, the couple find a full-length rubber "gimp" suit that they assume belonged to the gay couple who lived in the house prior.

Daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) starts at a new school only to be terrorized by a group of girls. Ben sees patients out of his home and one of them, a possibly psychotic boy named Tate (Evan Peters), strikes up a relationship with Violet, but goes too far when trying to help with her bullying problem. He writes "TAINT" on her chalkboard. Violet orders him to leave and not return, but it appears that Tate may not have executed their plan but perhaps something else in the home did.

Vivien rehires the elderly housekeeper Moira (Frances Conroy), who appears to Ben as a young seductive maid (Alexandra Breckenridge). Ben is approached by Larry (Denis O'Hare), a horribly burned former owner of the house who murdered his entire family, claiming that the house convinced him to. Larry warns Ben that if he doesn't get his family out of that house they will all die.

Later Ben becomes obsessed with burners in the kitchen and appears to be heading towards burning the house down, similar to what Larry had done. Constance appears and stops him. Meanwhile, Vivien is approached and seduced by the Rubber Man, who she believes to be Ben in the gimp suit. Vivien learns that she is pregnant. Moira catches Constance taking Vivien's jewelry and Constance gives her a cryptic warning: "Don't make me kill you again."

Seriously a great show. A scary, unsettling show. So creepy and so twisted. Feels like Twin Peaks and Twilight Zone, and Tales From the Darkside all in one neat evil package. And then that twisted opening years before the Harmon family move in. The twin boys going into the house breaking things and ending up murdered by something down in the basement.

The Walking Dead - Small Screen/Horror Spot Review

The Walking Dead - Small Screen/Horror Spot Review

Episode One - What Lies Ahead

We start off with a small recap of the past season through Rick talking into the walkie talkie. The group heads to Fort Benning, but are blocked by a pileup of abandoned vehicles on the interstate, and are delayed when the RV blows a radiator hose. Our group then search among the cars looking for supplies and replacement parts for the RV. Within minutes a lone zombie walker is spotted but it is not alone. A large herd of roaming zombies pass the survivors. The group narrowly avoids the herd of walkers passing through without much damage. Except for a close call when T Dog gets a deep and bloody cut that Daryl helps him with and Andrea almost killed by a nosy walker. But then Sophia is discovered by zombie walkers and chased into the woods.

Rick distracts and kills her pursuing walkers, but she goes missing in the process. During a search party for Sophia, the group stops to search a rural church. A depressed Andrea expresses resentment towards Dale for saving her from the CDC explosion, while Shane decides to leave the group when he has the chance. While still at the church, Andrea privately asks Shane if she can join him when he leaves the group. As the search continues, Rick, Shane and Carl discover a young buck; as Carl approaches the animal a gunshot from an unseen person strikes them both.

Pretty great start for the season two premiere. Kind of wished we had a bit more zombie action but what we got was more than enough. Like the previous season the perfect blend of drama, action, thrills, zombies, and kills continues. And that ending. Good lord what a cliffhanger.

The Spot News: James McAvoy Ready And Excited For Next X-Men Movie

Source: Spinoffonline

James McAvoy talked to Total Film about sequels to this year’s surprising hit X-Men: First Class, noting that he’s both contractually obligated to be in another flick, but interested as well. “I’d be up for it. But the truth is I’m contractually obliged to be up for it because they made us all sign multiple picture deals!” McAvoy told the magazine.

McAvoy went on to explain that he has spoken with director Matthew Vaughn about possible story arcs for potential sequel. The actor liked their new take on the X-Men films as they didn’t pit Professor X against Magneto and also feature Wolverine trying to find himself. “This was a completely different thing. Magneto wasn’t a bad guy, we were friends. We’re now set up to go back to the way the other movies are, so we’ve got to try to be cleverer than that.”

With no shortage of source material to pull from and a legion of mutants at their disposal, there should be no trouble coming up with another story that fits in with what Vaughn and the writers.

Puss In Boots - Movie Review

Puss In Boots - Movie Review

By Jose

Plot:

A story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends.

Voice Cast:

Antonio Banderas (Puss In Boots), Salma Hayek (Kitty Softpaws), Zach Galifianakis (Humpty Dumpty), Bill Bob Thorton (Jack), Amy Sedaris (Jill), Guillermo Del Toro (comandante/Moustache Man), Robert Persichetti Jr (Ohhh Cat)

Review:

“Maldita Huveo”
That is exactly how I will start this review for Puss In Boots.

I was lucky enough to catch a screening this past weekend with Robert for Puss In Boots. And I have to say I am really thankful for it. I really had a good time watching the movie. It was rather entertaining and enjoyable, so much better than the last two Shrek films. Obviously I had my doubts considering Puss was not a character from Shrek that should have gotten a solo film first. Like Donkey for example. But we have Puss and thank goodness for that.

The story is a straight forward origin film. Taking us on a early adventure with Puss, then some flashbacks when he was a kitten, and then back to his new adventure with childhood friend/ex-friend Humpty Dumpty in search of the magic beans. Of course along the way we have funny moments, song and dance, fight scenes, some more comedic scenes, and finally the redemption/happy ending.

What I would have liked to see more of was Jack and Jill. Yes they had plenty of screen time but I wanted a bit more. Otherwise the movie was fine. Clearly the main story involved Puss, Kitty, and Humpty. Everything else was filler. What I also liked was the film connects and brings the story full circle. With the flashback of Puss and Humpty’s past and then at the finale ending where they started, their home town. Usually animated movies tend to just deliver laughs and whatnot to keep kids entertained.

I actually did not realize that Zach Galifianakis was voicing Humpty. It didn’t hit me until a bit later into the movie. Good choice to tell you the truth. Salma Hayek did a good job with the lovely Kitty Softpaw. And Mr. Banderas continues to deliver with Puss. Thorton and Sedaris were lost playing Jack and Jill. It could have been anyone voicing them. Although they do have some funny lines in the film talking about how Jack wants to have a baby and Jill constantly shifting the conversation to the little boar babies they had. I threw in the Ohhh Cat in my voice cast above becasue he was truly hilarious every time he was on. Keep an eye out for him.

Final Thoughts:

Puss In Boots was a great spin-off film from the Shrek universe that surprised me very much on how much I truly enjoyed it. Great for kids and great for adults too. Reminded me of the fun and laughs I had with Skrek Two.

The Spot News: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Wants To Be In Tarantino’s Django Unchained

The Spot News: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Wants To Be In Tarantino’s Django Unchained

Source Spinoffonline

Even with Jamie Foxx signed on to play the titular Django, Leonard DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson signed on and Gerald McRaney in talks, there’s still roles to be figured out and scheduled. One such role will hopefully be filled by Joseph Gordon-Levitt of 50/50 and Inception fame, Variety reports.

According to the trade, Gordon-Levitt wants to be in the movie, but might run into scheduling conflicts because his upcoming Premium Rush will most likely open around the time Tarantino wants to start shooting (January of next year for a Dec. 25, 2012, release), and the actor might be needed to make the promotional rounds.

The movie’s already packed with some pretty heavy talent — Kurt Russell and Don Johnson have also signed on to the Weinstein Company Western
