The Spot News: Jeremy Renner is on a fucking roll!
The man is on fire! Blowing up! And still, if I were to bring up the name Jeremy Renner, most people would still go "who?"
Enough of that who stuff. It's a ridiculous question at this point. Or at least it will be in another year. This guy is going to be all over the place, all over your TV screens, movie screens, computer screens, EVERYWHERE!
And why you ask? Take a look at this guys line-up: The lead villain role in the next Mission Impossible movie, Hawkeye in the next Thor and (likely) The Avengers films, the lead role in the next Bourne film and most recently, a role in the next Ice Age film.
Those are all movies that in the past have made Billions of dollars, millions of viewers and take the actors to a whole new level in their career. Matt Damon, Tom Cruise have both received huge boosts for their work in their respective films.
Is Renner headed for stardom?

The Spot News: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 trailer
By: Robert Acosta
It is here! The trailer to the final part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and to whole series.
I won't say much cause this trailer deserves to be seen and not talked about until it has been seen.
NOTE: The poster above is not an official poster, it is fan made.
The Spot News: New X-Men First Class trailer
By: Robert Acosta
The X-Men movie franchise, very much like the Spider-Man film series, looked to be in turmoil after X-Men: The Last Stand. The Last Stand didn't cut it for fans who were expecting something spectacular, as they should have with the first 2 films doing really well.
We may see a huge rejuvenation in the X-Men series with X-Men: First Class. It has the potential to be something great, a movie that will make people forget about the 3rd X-Men film. Michael Fassbender looks like he's going to rock the shit as Magneto. The cast as a whole looks like it's meshing together very well.
X-Men: First Class hits theaters on June 3rd (My Birthday by the way!)

The Spot News: Insidious profits, Scream plummets
In a way this a 2 part news post that horror fans will love and hate. Nonetheless, horror fans enjoy it for what it is.
I personally think that Scream 4 did alright for itself, the movie is a solid sequel, especially considering the long absence between part 3 and 4. Financially however, it choked. Plans for a Scream 5 and 6, for now, have been slashed. I say for now because in the field of horror, nothing ever dies that easy.
On the bright side, not really Screams bright side, Insidious has been the most profitable movie in 2011. It only took $1 Million dollars to make Insidious. It has so far raked in $45 Million dollars. HUGE profit. Then again, i'm not too surprised by that. Think about the 3 guys behind the film. James Wan and Leigh Whannel, the guys who created the first Saw and Oren Peli, the guy who created the first Paranormal Activity. Both huge hits, both extremely profitable.
What has me, and others, a bit worried is the idea that both Saw and PA became franchises after their big splash. Is Insidious headed down that same road? All signs point in that direction.
The Spot News: Sam Raimi and Disney Want Different Actress For OZ
The Spot News: Sam Raimi and Disney Want Different Actresses For OZ The Great And Powerful
Sam Raimi is said to be at loggerheads with Disney over who should play a key part in his upcoming “origins of the Wizard” picture, Oz The Great and Wonderful. The role in question is that of a witch, one of several in the film, with Mila Kunis already cast as the youngest amongst their number.
Raimi’s choice for this witch is Hilary Swank, with whom he previously collaborated on The Gift, and who has a couple of Oscar wins under her belt but has, lately, seen her selection of films work out less well. Meanwhile, the studio would prefer Michelle Williams, who is certainly more fashionable right now.

The Spot News: More Dark Knight Casting News
So now we finally find out from Warner Bros. on who Joseph Gordon Levitt and Marion Cotillard will be playing in Chris Nolan‘s thid Batmovie, The Dark Knight Rises. From the press release:
Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.
Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.
Who? These are officail casting news? I still say they are messing with us and wont reveal the actual roles until the film releases. Because I doubt they are going to waste JGL on a throw-away background character.
Nolan is quoted as saying:
When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.

Good thing I sat on this bit of news before posting it. Before it was somewhat made official that Renner will be taking the lead of the new Bourne film, it was said that Animal Kingdom‘s Joel Edgerton had the lead role. But later changed or corrected.
Universal are wrapping up a contract for Jeremy Renner to star in Tony Gilroy‘s The Bourne Legacy as the new lead spy. The new lead characters name is Martin.

The Spot News: Captain American Films Scene in New York
Source joblo.com
Joe Johnston was there on set, not Joss Whedon, so it’s not likely this is material for The Avengers. Assuming it is something for the Captain America film, then it would seem a fair bet that they are shooting the “after credits” scene.
Considering it was filmed in Times Square this past Saturday and had Fury the way we have seen him previously in other Marvel films. It must be a modern/2011 scene.

The Spot News: Avengers Start Filming Today
The Spot News: Avengers Start Filming Today
Avengers movie start filming today according to director Joss Whedon. Here is what he had to say (posted yesterday):
Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:
[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]
Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)
So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I'm off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I'm pretty sure it's about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I'll get it. I've been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.
Catchphrase!

The Spot News: Robert Pattinson Seems Set To Play Jeff Buckley
Source Bleedingcool.com
In a new interview, Robert Pattinson has dropped a pretty big hint that he’s associated with the project. This comes from Inquirer:
Robert revealed details on another matter that has been drawing a lot of speculation—that he is playing Jeff Buckley in a biopic about the singer-songwriter who drowned in 1997. “I met his mom who’s really great,” he said of Mary Guibert, executive producer of the film reportedly going to be directed by “Welcome to the Rileys” director Jake Scott. That Robert talked to Mary indicate that both are at least exploring the idea. “I don’t know,” he said, then hinted, “It’s really not up to me. I love Jeff’s music. He was amazing.”
I’d imagine it’s his to turn down, at this stage.
In the same article, the interviewer gets the best info yet on young Mr. Pattinson’s intention to write a screenplay, something somehow derived from some mysterious Lillian Hellman work or another. The article reads:
Robert clarified that his screenplay project is not based on one of Lillian’s novels. “It’s just something Lillian Hellman wrote.” Laughing again, he said, “I can’t really say what it is.”

The Spot News: Thomas Jane: Headshot
Source: Joblo.com
Thomas Jane will be joining Sylvester Stallone in the upcoming non-Rocky, non-Rambo feature HEADSHOT.
Here's the official plot:
Stallone will star as a New Orleans hitman who teams with an NYPD detective (Jane), as they are brought together by two vicious murders. The two proceed to take on all who stand in their way.
Jane hails the script as "fantastic" and told our boys a little about the role he'd be playing opposite Sly.
"He's a hitman, I'm a cop, and we're just opposite in every f*cking way, and we need each other to get this job done. And of course I'm like, 'As soon as this job's over, I'm going to take you to jail, you know, you're a killer.'"

Here’s how Whannell pitched a comedy script he’s recently wrapped:
I actually just wrote a comedy about a zombie virus that breaks out in a primary school but only effects people who haven’t been through puberty. There’s all these eight or nine year olds running around and the teachers are holed up inside the school. And the titles of the film is…? Cooties. Eoin Colfer , who was speaking to the Irish Independent‘s Weekend Review, director Jim Sheridan is currently ” in LA, trying to get it unblocked”.
The problem, apparently, is “the format of the movie” – which might mean they’re arguing about how many books worth of story to squeeze into one film, or if they end on a cliffhanger or a happy ending with every bow tied neatly. These were arguments that the filmmakers behind, for example, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings and The Spiderwick Chronicles all had to go through.
Sheridan previously directed My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father, to give just two fine examples, and has Dream House with Daniel Craig coming along later in the year. I like most of his films a great deal, and all of them at least a little. And yes, that includes Get Rich or Die Trying, the 50 Cent film he was responsible for.
The same newspaper reported back in February that Saoirse Ronan took meetings with Sheridan about the role of Holly Short, a member of the elven law force. Colfer punningly calls these characters LEPRecons, or members of the Lower Element Police Reconnaissance. This week, the Irish Independent say, Colfer “wants” Ronan to take the role.

DVD Releases April 19th
I've missed out on the last couple weeks here on The Movie Spot, in pretty much everything. I'm glad to be back writing the DVD Releases, among other things.
Though, there hasn't been a whole lot of great DVDs to talk about, and this week is no different. A couple of DVDs to note, including one that came out this past Friday:
- Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Out on 4/15)
- The King's Speech
- Gulliver's Travels
- Rabbit hole
- Somewhere
- Mortal Kombat
- Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
- Glee: Encore
So as you can see, not a whole lot to grab here. Also, Tron: Legacy, Tron: The Original Classic, Country Strong and Little Fockers have been released in the last few weeks on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Weekend Box Office April 15th-April 17th
Rio $40 Million- Scream 4 $19.3 Million
- Hop $11.2 Million
- Soul Surfer $7.4 Million
- Hanna $7,3 Million
- Arthur $6.9 Million
- Insidious $6.8 Million
- Source Code $6.3 Million
- The Conspirator $3.9 Million
- Your Highness $3.8 Million
I didn't expect Rio to make that much money though, Very good release for them. Scream 4 did OK, though it only ranked 3 in the series in terms of opening weekend numbers. I'm guessing the long layoff between parts 3 and 4 proved to be hurtful for the series rather than a breath of fresh air.
Your Highness, a really funny movie(though not hilarious) is hanging by a thread. Now The Conspirator came out of nowhere to vault into the top 10. I don't make much of that, but it's noteworthy.
Water for Elephants and Madeas Big Happy Family make their way to the big screen. No doubt in my mind that Madea will find her way back on top.

The Spot News: Stallone May Direct Expandables 2
The Spot News: Stallone May Direct Expandables 2
After the physical punishment he put himself through while making THE EXPENDABLES, director/star Sylvester Stallone had implied that if the gang returned for a sequel, he wanted to hand directing duties off to someone else so he could just concentrate on slaughtering in front of the camera instead of multitasking the mayhem.
Sly has apparently decided not to bother getting a replacement, and will reportedly just do the job his own damn self after all.
Stallone was expected to make the cop drama HEADSHOT first, but after director Wayne Kramer (RUNNING SCARED, THE COOLER) departed due to the obligatory "creative differences", there was conjecture that Sly would take over shooting it. But it sounds like he'll instead get his green T-shirt and round up his mercenary squad for a different kind of shooting.
The EXPENDABLES sequel is expected in theaters August 17, 2012. Most of the surviving cast will likely return for further carnage, along with a new list of familiar faces ready for brief appearances and/or grisly deaths. Bruce Willis is probably going to be back as the guy giving them tons of trouble and random dudes to.

The younger Franco joins the cast as a drug dealing high school student, presumably eventually busted by the duo of undercover cops Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Deadline points out that Franco is 26, Hill is 28 and Tatum is 31, and it seems this movie really will be stretching the bounds of "playing high school."

The Spot News: Ra’s Al Ghul Cast In The Dark Knight Rises
It seems that Christopher Nolan and company have written Ra’s Al Ghul into The Dark Knight Rises.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, that man is Josh Pence. Pence provided the body for Secondary Winklevoss in The Social Network, in the shots where Armie Hammer needed to interact with “himself”.
So most likely a rejuvenated Ra's after a dip in the Lazarus Pit or a flashback scene will be shown in the movie.

Tim Miller‘s history is in VFX. A quick look at his resume shows that he worked on both of Brian Singer’s X-Men movies, alongside Babe: Pig in the City, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes.
So it is a new guy. Not a bad choice really. It would just mean he would have to work hard to release a good film. Unlike a 'name' director who would just do whatever and that is it.

The Spot News: Superman title and villain both named
I don't really pay a whole lot of mind to the DC Universe. It's lackluster to me. You look beyond Batman and Superman, and there is nothing too intriguing about the DC Universe. Well, other than Batman's enemies and some of Superman's enemies.
News about the next Superman film is bit entertaining, but only until more Batman film news comes out. The title of the next Superman film has been long rumored to be Man of Steel. And it has been confirmed to be Man of Steel. That isn't the biggest part of this post though.
Here is the biggest part of this news. Fighting against Superman will be none other than.....Zod! Were you expecting Lex Luthor Again? Well, I don't blame you. General Zod isn't exactly new to the film series appearing in Superman II back in the day when the series was a bit more credible. In even cooler news, Michael Shannon has been picked to play the part. I've seen him in some films, and should do alright with the part. You can tell i'm not expecting much from this project. It has a lot to prove.

- Diary of a Wimpy Kid $4.9 Million
- The Lincoln Lawyer $4.6 Million
I expected a higher showing from Your Hignness and Source Code(2 movies I checked out this weekend) because the advertisement they got. It's hard to compete with simplistic, for lack of a better word, movies or movies that aren't rated R.
Next week Scream 4 and Rio make their debut on the big screen, with my prediction of Scream 4 to take the top spot.

The Spot News: Could McDreamy Be Doctor Strange?
The Spot News: Could McDreamy Be Doctor Strange?
Patrick Dempsey is interested in playing the one and only Doctor Stephen Strange. A few days ago, Dempsey shared his thoughts with Hero Complex, “I’ve been lobbying for that. There’s a whole bunch of people [among the 'Grey's' crew] who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set and they’re like, ‘Doctor Strange, that’s the one you should do.’ It would be fantastic. It’d be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that. I don’t know if I’d necessarily do another show, a drama, that’s 24 episodes again. HBO you’re at 13 and I think that’s much better. It’s just so hard to sustain the quality after three years if you’re doing 24, 25 episodes a year. It all depends on who you have as a writing team — it’s how you set it up, what’s the tone and making sure you’re not locked into this one-season success [mentality], you can’t be afraid to think beyond that.”
Hero Complex asked if Dempsey had spoken to Feige or Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s head of television:
“He knows what’s going on. There was stuff going on. At Comic-Con they were talking about me playing it and there was a rumor that I’d been cast. I mean, it’s something that’s kind of out there and, you know, I’ve been looking at that. It would be a fun one to do. Hopefully, doing something like ‘Transformers’ is about to show myself in an action situation where I’m not mister-weepy-doctor guy, you know, not McDreamy. You have to change that in people’s view. I’m still hungry for other things. I’d love to play Doctor Strange.”
