The Spot News: Ghostbusters 3 News

Word from Dan Aykroyd on the status of the long-in-development sequel. The actor and writer discussed the subject in an appearance on The Dennis Miller Show, revealing that Bill Murray isn’t set to return but that the plan is to start shooting early next year.

Aykroyd says the script is “excellent,” and that the plan is still to tell a story about the aging original Ghostbusters passing on the torch to a younger generation. The only thing that doesn’t add up here is the Murray absence; approval the original starring foursome, plus director Ivan Reitman, is needed to make the new movie happen. Will Murrray still sign off if he isn’t involved?

The Spot News: Up Close Look At New Superman Costume

The Spot News: Up Close Look At New Superman Costume

These latest photos from the Illinois set of Man of Steel now provide us with our best look at Superman’s much-discussed costume, and illustrate how closely the newly introduced DC Comics redesign resembles its big-screen counterpart.

Still not liking the change. At least it looks alright. Not sure if I like the texture it seems to have. Almost like a basket ball. Plus it looks like he is hung like a bull, they couldn't hide it or try to flatten it out a bit?

The Spot News: MODOK vs. Captain America?

                                     By: Robert Acosta

This summer, Captain America released to some really positive reviews, a lot of rave reviews, good box office numbers, the whole nine. Marvel loves to think ahead, and while they may be thinking a small bit ahead, the writer of Captain America has an idea for the sequel.

His idea: Let's throw MODOK into the situation. Better yet, he's already got a man in mind for the part of MODOK. Peter Dinklage. I'll admit, I really had to think back hard to remember who in the hell Peter Dinklage is. Well, it shouldn't be too hard. He's the small guy (midget) from Death at a Funeral, ELF and 1 episode of Entourage.

Now, I like that idea. It's bold and it's a villain i'd like to see come to life. But, I also wonder. I wonder, very much like the source of this news bit argues, where does the time frame of this sequel even take place and will it effect what villain they get for this sequel? If you've seen Captain America, or the teaser for the Avengers, we're in modern day. Not the 1940s as most of Captain America's movie takes place in. There's a lot of time between now and Captain America 2, so i'm sure all will be sorted out.

Entourage Season 1 Review

By: Robert Acosta

Cast:
Adrian Grenier as Vincent Chase
Kevin Connelly as Eric "E" Murphy
Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold
Jerry Ferrara as Turtle
Kevin Dillion as Johnny "Drama" Chase

Plot: You follow Vincent Chase and all of his friends, rise to the top of the acting biz, only to be met with tons of obstacles that come with becoming a star, and overall as a person.

I'll be honest, i'm not much of a TV person. So, when you see that I've written something about a TV show, it must be something good then. Personally, I find it hard to get into TV shows. Some of them have really good plots with poor execution, some of them I just don't find interesting and most really can't grab my attention for too long. HBO shows/series on the other hand, they really hook me. They win all these awards, year after year, and it's easy to see why. A lot of effort gets put into these shows, and you can see it.

Enough of that, let's get into why we're here. Entourage. I caught Entourage for the first time in Season 7, after noticing that the sexy Emmanuelle Chriqui was on it. I got hooked on the show as a whole and decided, it's time to get myself caught up. Entourage is now in its final season, season 8, and I plan on giving you a review for each season, leading up to the finale and review of the 8th and final season.

Season 1 only consists of 8 episodes, which shows that HBO thought that maybe they had something, they just didn't know what. So, 8 episodes, 25-30 minutes each episode, doesn't seem like much to go on but the content is very good in this short amount of time.

Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) and E (Kevin Connelly)
What made Entourage work in season 1, and what has made the series so great, is the characters. Not one character presented in season 1 is dull. From the main 5 characters all the way down to the small roles and cameos.

Adrian Grenier as Vincent Chase, presents Vince as a hotshot, up and coming actor who already looks like he's going to enjoy the party lifestyle that comes with being a star. From hooking up with girl after girl, to spending crazy amounts of money on luxury items, he's the free spirited, sometimes insecure, character of the group.

Going down the food chain, the management behind Vincent Chase consists of two people. One guy being his best friend and his eventual manager, Eric "E" Murphy and the other being his agent, Ari Gold. Now, Ari and E really go at it, back and forth arguments during the season. E, very much like Vince, comes from a small neighborhood in Queens, New York. So it's fair to say that E is probably not qualified to be a movie stars manager and Ari doesn't let him forget that, but being the stars best friend helps. The constant back and forth between Ari and E is probably the best part of season 1. It's clever, heated and above all, damn entertaining to watch. Jeremy Piven as Ari is dare I say, gold, and has easily become my favorite character of the series. He's this extremely witty, off the wall kind of character that entertains the whole season.

Johnny Drama and Turtle
Finishing up the food chain, we have Vince's two tag along/lackey kind of guys. His brother, Johnny "Drama" Chase is trying to find his way back into the acting biz while their friend Turtle is really just along for the ride and mooches off of Vince. I wanna say they provide some comedic relief, but everyone else is already funny, and I personally like Drama's "side" story of his career revival.

Season 1 is entertaining all the way through, filled with comedy, good drama, great storytelling and lots of celebrity cameos. Including: Jessica Alba, Leighton Meester, Gary Busey, Larry David, Scarlett Johansson and so many more.

Season 1 is a great way to start the series, but definitely the best has yet to come.

The Small Screen: Locke And Key Trailer

The Small Screen: Locke And Key Trailer

Please watch it while you can. Who knows how much longer it has before Fox takes it down.

I have posted before about Locke And Key (really good, highly recommended comic series) being made into a TV series. A pilot episode was made and yet even though it was liked and loved by many. It was not picked up due to the incompetence. It seems that they considered the show too cinematic. That this pilot set a standard that no TV series could ever maintain.
Here is to hoping the one day this pilot will make it out to the fans and hope that somehow it gets made.

Editorial/The Spot News: Superman Where Are Your Under Pants?

Editorial/The Spot News: Superman Where Are Your Under Pants?

New photos from the Illinois set of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel confirm that Henry Cavill isn’t wearing the traditional red trunks, provide a first look at Antje Traue as the Kryptonian criminal Faora, and introduce a mysterious figure into the mix.

Well these photos confirm that the new reboot/relaunch/renumbering of DC Comics will affect the new Superman movie.

If you haven't heard DC Comics are "rebooting" their universe completely. All starting with new #1's and messing around with what came before and tweaking origins to a degree. Also new costumes. Well one of those changes comes from the removal of the iconic red trunks of Superman. Now it is just straight blue with red accents/boots and the shield. And it seems the movie will follow along with this experiment from WB/DC Comics.

Personally I don't like it. Movie viewers are not comic readers and those that are readers do not make the majority of viewers going to see the movie. You have regular people who are familiar with the original look with the red undies. Change it for the sake of matching the book and you will anger some people, especially non-comic fans. I mean if they didn't go for the comic look for Green Lantern or for Batman why then follow the comics now for Superman?

It doesn't make much sense to me (movie wise) to do this. If all I knew of Superman was the Christopher Reeves movies and the cartoons, the Bryan Singer movie, and other non-comic images. After seeing this I would be kind of angry or upset that they changed it.

Plus this is coming from a comic book fan. Changes happen. Things in comics don't work in real live action movies sometimes. But keep the iconic look and feel of the characters. I know they changed costumes for X-Men, but would you have taken it seriously if they ran out in brightly colored spandex suits?

Superman is known more for his look than for who he is. The same for Captain America, Spider-Man, Batman, and a couple of others. And changing that look just makes me feel like I lost an icon just to fit into what a corporate company wants to shove in our faces. So screw you WB and screw you DC Comics for taking away Superman's red underwear.

Editorial: Can't we just keep things hidden?

By: Robert Acosta

Remember the days when you really didn't know too much about movies going into watching them? You knew the name of the movie, the cast, and a basic plot of the movie, but nothing more. Nowadays, you go into a movie knowing the whole damn thing and you feel like you've wasted 2 hours of your life, watching something you saw coming.

So whose to blame for that?

Well, in a sense, everyone! But it starts with the most important people involved. The director, the studio, everyone involved with making the movie. You would think that they have control over who you allow around the set, around the perimeter of the set. Instead, pictures, videos of movies leak months in advance. Next in line for the blame is the media. All the media outlets we have now, especially for movies, purposely leak this information so that their site gets attention. Now, i'm not saying the Movie Spot doesn't do it (rarely) but we're following in the footsteps of everyone else. Then, they put the infamous SPOILERS BELOW DO NOT READ "sign" as if that really is going to help at all.

Last in line for the blame, and sorry to throw you under the bus but, the readers. You thrive off finding these certain news items, and then complain when you find them too when you know you could have easily avoided them by just reading the title of the article.

This rant comes off the heels of articles revealing pics and videos of The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers. Both of those movies are movies i'm tremendously looking forward to, why do they have to be spoiled? I want to go into both movies not knowing too much. I feel like little by little, all the surprises, all the greatness that could have been, will be taken out of the films.

So please, for the sake of the audience, can we please stay from spoilers.

Source Spinoff Online

ABC has bought a modern-day retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic psychological thriller The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Deadline reports.

Created by Up in the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner, the contemporary Hyde centers on Grant Hyde, a hesitant emergency room doctor with a degenerative eye condition who, after undergoing an experimental treatment to improve his sight, begins to experience a bizarre side effect: When he sleeps, his id manifests as HYDE, a fearless personality who takes control where Grant cannot.

Hyde is the first sale for Turner and Jennifer Klein’s newly launched Vendetta production company in a first-look deal with ABC Studios. The duo will executive produce the series, which Deadline says is “described as an odd buddy show where the buddies happen to be the same person.”

Up-and-comer Caleb Landry Jones has joined the Neil Jordan-directed vampire drama BYZANTIUM, reports Variety. He joins Saoirse Ronan (HANNA) and Gemma Arterton ( HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS ) in the film, which is based on the Moira Buffini play.

Here's the synopsis of the play the film is based on:

Two young women arrive in a nameless British smalltown. Their names are not their own. They don’t declare their ages. Their relationship with each other is not clear. Are they sisters, as their assumed identities declare? Or are they mother and daughter? The eldest, Claire, takes a job in a pub. The youngest, Eleanor, goes to school.

During a truth exercise in her drama class, Eleanor confesses that she has been alive for over two hundred years and has survived by drinking human blood. Her classmates think she is utterly crazy and Mint, her teacher, puts her in touch with the school counsellor. She makes one friend, Frank, a boy who has been home educated and is as much of an oddity as Eleanor. He tries to get to the bottom of her vampire delusion, thinking it an epic and compelling psychosis. Why would anyone want to be undead?

Jones will play "Frank", who is also dying of leukemia and questioning his own mortality.

Not really. Just that filming of both do overlap a bit.

Director James Mangold’s The Wolverine will reportedly film in British Columbia for four months beginning in November, suggesting Fox has abandoned plans to shoot much of the sequel in Japan.

The news comes this morning from The Vancouver Sun, which says production on the Hugh Jackman movie will take place from Nov. 11 to March 1 at the Canadian Motion Picture Park in Burnaby, just East of Vancouver. The facilities have been used for such movies as X-Men, Fantastic Four and Watchmen, and television series like Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural.

Filming of The Wolverine will overlap with that of Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel, which moves to British Columbia on Sept. 21.

The Spot News: NBC Bringing back The Munsters?

The Spot News: NBC Bringing back The Munsters?

TV Guide reports that NBC is revisiting plans to revive The Munsters. With Bryan Fuller, creator of Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies, remaining at the helm.

The network ordered the pilot last fall, but ultimately passed on the project, which was described as “Modern Family meets True Blood.” But new NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt now wants to return to 1313 Mockingbird Lane, so Fuller’s “edgier” take on the 1960s comedy is back in development.

Fuller’s remake is an hour-long show featuring the original characters. He’s expected to explore the Munsters‘ origins, something not addressed in the original series.

You know at first I was a bit upset about this news, but now I am for it. I am too young to have fully enjoyed watching the Munsters on TV when they first aired and only seen a few episodes here and there. So a modern take on the Munster Family might not be bad. Considering all the reality garbage TV has been shoving down our throats.

Teen Wolf (2011) Season Review - Small Screen Spot

Teen Wolf (2011) Season Review - Small Screen Spot

By Jose

Main Cast:

Tyler Posey (Scott McCall), Crystal Reed (Allison Argent), Dylan O’Brien (Stiles), Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale), Holland Roden (Lydia Martin), Colton Haynes (Jackson), JR Bourne (Argent), Linden Ashby (Sheriff Stilinsky), Mellissa Ponzio (Mellissa McCall), Jill Wagner (Kate Argent), Ian Bohen (Peter Hale)

Review:

Remake/adaptation is a terrible word that makes movie fans cringe. Movie makers/Hollywood love to see those fans cringe so they abuse that word constantly. But every once in a while those remakes and adaptations are good if not better or dare I say surpass the original. Teen Wolf is one of those.

Now before you all go grabbing pitch forks and torches let me tell you that I was not on board for this show at first. I mean first you have it on and done by MTV, which is a huge warning sign itself. Second since Twilight is so huge and it being MTV, they could just do a werewolf version of Twilight and inject a ton of top ten pop songs. Or it could have been Teen Mom meets Jersey Shore meets werewolves.

But no. For some odd reason Teen Wolf was just a modern yet slightly romantic take on the classic Michael J. Fox comedy of the same name. It seemed whoever was behind the scenes of creating this show didn’t want to take the obvious MTV route. They wanted something serious and good. And they got it.

The first episode introduced us to the main cast and our main teen wolf, Scott McCall, and his crazy buddy Stiles. We got to know a bit of everyone that would be involved and my first look at seeing an actual decent show coming together. Throughout the season we are given many reasons to like these characters and to enjoy the show. Hell at one point I was left wanting more and upset that I had to wait a week for the next episode. Season one of Teen Wolf gave us a perfect view of a teenager falling in love and going through high school and being on a sports team all while fighting against his inner teen werewolf. A bit more into the season we start to see that an underlying story was boiling to the top. Who was attacking and killing all those people? Who are these hunters and what is their connection to the attacks? What side is Derek Hale on? Who is the alpha? And Will Scott become a killer?

Photobucket

After the season finale this past Monday (8/15/2011) all was answered, to a degree, along with adding the finale cliffhanger leaving you wanting more. All the twists and turns were great. The action and drama was to me spot on and good. The interactions between the characters were believable and the friendship between Stile sand Scott was fun and nice to see. Now obviously I am treaty this season review as I do a movie review, I don’t want to reveal too much and spoil anything just in case someone hasn’t seen the show yet or haven’t finished watching it or hell hasn’t aired yet. But I will say that Teen Wolf surprised me and I loved the show. It was great and can’t wait for season two to begin.

Now how about those characters? For me Stiles stole the show. I loved that kid. He was hilarious and faithful. And great friend I wish I had in real life. Just his mannerisms and facial movements alone are funny. Scott was a great teen wolf. What can I say, you ended up falling for the kid. Crystal Reed who played Allison Argent was a good looking somewhat of an outcast girl that Scott fell in love with. A strong character that was tormented by not being able to protect herself they way she wanted. Even if she had to go through and experience things that were not all that “nice”. Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) did well being the brooding, mysterious, tormented mentor werewolf to Scott. Holland Roden (Lydia) was the hot red head popular girl dating the star jock who had a secret of actually being an intelligent girl. I didn’t like her at first but as the end of the season was playing through we saw the other side of her that I liked. I hope she ends up with Stiles at some point. Speaking of the jock Jackson (Colton Haynes) was exactly what you think. The cocky jock who thinks he is better than everyone. Then becomes this asshole paranoid freak when Scott becomes better and eventually co-captain of the lacrosse team. Jackson ends up wanting Scott to turn him or any of the werewolves at any cost. We will see if he survives in the coming season.

The FX of the show were on par with what you would normally see in other TV shows. What I did like was that they went with practical effects and makeup along with enhancing with CGI. I liked that a lot. Because knowing how CGI can look without a proper budget (SYFY movies). Although they went full CG with the alpha werewolf, but thankfully they showed that during dark scenes and at night so we couldn’t see the faults.

I pretty much enjoyed the way they made Scott look while transformed into a werewolf. They kept it simple and easy. A humanoid with a bit of warped facial features. Some extra long sideburns, teeth and contacts, and the long pointy ears.

What I also liked that there was an obvious different between Derek and Scott. Scott looked rather adorable as a wolf while Derek was more rugged and ugly as a wolf. It showed to me how the age difference can come into play with how the transformations looked. Speaking of looks, because of this being an MTV show and the majority of the viewers would have been teenage girls and boys, the hot guy and hot girl cast was pretty obvious. The guys were all good looking and given many excuses to be shirtless, sweaty or wet. While the girls were all hot yet never shown in anything too “slutty”. Jill Wagner caught my eye more then the others. She could try and kill me whenever she wants.

Final Thoughts:

Teen Wolf could have been a mess especially with MTV but what we got and what I saw was a well made TV adaptation. Great story and great cast. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for season two.

Introducing The Small Screen Spot

Introducing The Small Screen Spot

Robert has received a couple of messages asking if we would ever review or talk about/write about shows on TV. We have talked about it before but never really went for it did anything toward a TV section for the blog. Now I have personally added some TV news items here and there. So us doing TV stuff is not out of the question. The problem was that it would have to me (Jose) that would have to carry that section considering I am a TV whore. haha

So here I am to introduce The Small Screen Spot. Now it will be a learning curve. I am not sure how I will go about reviewing shows but hopefully I will get something together before the new fall TV season starts. So for now I will be practicing with the summer season shows that I have watched/ currently watching.

So I hope you stick around and enjoy this addition to The Movie Spot.
